Wanderers from Ys FTW. My strat when I was a kid was leave the SNES on overnight in the first cave on one of the hills with D-Pad Up and the sword button weighted down and wake up at max level.

You already autoattack and there's no reason to hit faster since the birds don't spawn fast enough to warrant it after you start 1 shotting them.
