Just a heads up, no new videos till at least monday, probably Tuesday. Someone is very busy and can't talk about video games until monday. But i have a few videos premade waiting for Guava on monday. Also we're going to start needing nicknames for people.

Actually replaying it right now on commander with all the DLC. Activted DLC somewhat in the midgame, so I think the actual shens gift DLC mission didnt trigger. Whats the opinion on the DLC stuff? I do have all of the special armors, they are in a way upgrades, but they arent quite blowing my mind.

They're reminiscent of the scripted story missions in EU/EW only not so hilariously scripted that you can guess exactly where every enemy is. And they allow you to put them off (no having the opening mission of Progeny with all of its Thin Men forced down your throat by the council during the third week of the game). Instead they're a rather decent challenges that unlock content when you complete them. Or you can just leave them off, all the content is still in the game even if you turn off the missions. *I did the Tower completely blind with only a squad-size of 4 and ballistic weapons. With one of my crew being a ranger with an SMG who was almost literally useless. I still managed to make it through but I will say expect quite a bit of a challenge if you do that because I'm also sure I only won because i was incredibly lucky.

Not only that but there are absolutely no consequences whatsoever to visiting the Nest and completing it definitely does not unleash superpowered alien boss monsters from hell who have a chance to suddenly show up in the middle of every subsequent mission for the rest of the game.

I did the tower as my first mission once I was out of the tutorial (with squad size five) but it was fine. The special unit makes it much easier. As do two sharpshooters and a shred gunner.

Instead they're a rather decent challenges that unlock content when you complete them. So, did the tower blind. Squad size 5, some seargents, DLC stuff. With long war on, long war assault (easily the MVP with close combat specialist), long war rifleman (mehish, all the armor does reduce his efficiency) Grenadier wearing the crossbow (could reliably one shoot the mechs, which was very useful) and a pistol sniper (did not have much fun with the pistol. In the stage after the extra unit, I actually murdered so many that they stopped spawning, probably should have done this in the first stage as well. The bossfight was intense though (would have been less hard had I conserved consumeables). Lucked out with a Crossbow stun. Else I think it would have wrecked the extra unit. I did have the alien bosses in my mid game playthrough. The second one was the only one who came close to killing anyone. Nearly bagged the first one on its first appearance (have I mentioned that I like close combat specialist?). As far as character entries go, may I recommend the deadpool voicepack? Seriously, with goons its one of the best voicepacks around imho. It does exactly what you think it would do, and its pretty great.

All i'll say is that you should do the Shen Last Gift mission as soon as possible, so you can benefit from it's reward for the longest possible time. Won't hold it against you if you want at least squad size 5 first though.
I can have moments of... eccentricity and sometimes be quite curious about things. Please forgive me if I do something foolish or rude.

man I just bought this because of this LP (and because I had a GMG coupon and it was one sale, bonus) but I have to say that the base management feels really strange in comparison to EW, almost like I'm going to have to "lose" once to really get a handle on the game. Kinda like UFO Defense it's ok if you lose your first time through

The important thing is to build a workshop in the middle of a second row. This workshop can then support the surrounding things. Once you acquired some engineers, things become much easier.

Mightypeon posted:The important thing is to build a workshop in the middle of a second row. Yeah thats exactly where I normally would say to build a workshop. Turns out building the GTS where I did in the LP is a little sub optimal. Cost of running the tutorial I guess. It'll be alright though.

It'll be alright though. Its not really such a big deal though. I generally build 2 resistance commmunications and (hopefully) one energy relay on a + energy tile around it. That actually takes up the most gremlin spots from the workshop pretty nicely anyway. Given that the early game is the most difficult part (simply because you have way less options available), especially if you want to do the DLC missions early, I would argue that getting the GTS early and improving your early game is key. Troops size upgrades are huge (in terms of getting a pool of good soldiers), some of the other GTS upgrades can also quickly pay for themselfs as well. In a way, the most valuable resource in the game is, imho, time. A suboptimal layout is often a trade in which you gain time, but lose some efficiency (mostly its just an engineer more then you need). The advanced warfare center imho shouldnt be such a huge priority. While sometimes you get fun stuff such as "you can now crit with overwatches" on a close combat specialist (last time I got that was "Bwhahahahahahahahahaha" time they guy could take out entire reinforcement pods on his own without actually using actions, or allowing the aliens a turn) but its far more common to get something crumpy.
