So apparently there is now a new sonic cycle where Sega makes an effort to bring Sonic back to his roots every few years to win back enough fans to support the poo poo they follow it up with.

Blink and you'll miss it but the lightning shield from Sonic 3 can be seen at the top of a loop in the GHZ footage.

The new zone looks great and already shows more creativity than anything in the 100+ levels Dimps created over the years. The Green Hill Zone footage didn't look too exciting, though. Either the remix stuff comes later or it's not significant. I'd rather the game be all new zones since the whole reimagine old zones thing has been done to death at this point especially with GHZ.

So wait, Sonic Mania is on current gen consoles, but not 3DS or smartphones? According to the end of the trailer, at any rate. That seems odd. Maybe they'll look into that later? I can't see it being beyond the reach of those devices.

There are Sonic Spinball sounds when Sonic jumps into the van. :3 Also the drop dash looks like a good addition; no need for a homing attack, but none of that jumping and air boosting to pick up speed that Sonic 4 had.

I guess this is the sonic thread.

I love the original genesis sonic games and didn't care for anything after that. So far this Sonic Mania looks pretty good but the physics have to be on point for me to care. Sonic 4 got them all wrong.

Also the music needs to be done by Michael Jackson. I don't care how they do it.

The physics will be close to perfect, the physics for Sonic were reverse engineered by sonic fans a while back from the original Genesis code.

It's the same engine as the sonic CD/1/2 remakes.

Yeah the physics for Sonic Mania are going to be perfect, Christian Whitehead is involved and that dude knows how to make a retro Sonic in a modern engine

Christian Whitehead is the guy who made the updated Sonic 1, 2, and CD that are available on Android and whatever other systems. They've got widescreen and they're great, if you haven't tried them. I'd certainly recommend trying them out if you want to re-play the old games.

I don't know about you guys but I loving loved generations (except for the awful bosses) and he idea were getting that same combo again is really exciting to me.

Also sonic mania is awesome and the animated intro is awesome. Super excited.

Here's hoping we aren't in another cycle again. The fact that the new 3D game is so far out gives hope that sega are actually keeping their promise of quality that they talked about a couple month ago.

Is there a way to play them on a non-mobile paltform? I tried Sonic 2 but I can't get the hang of using a touchscreen to move a virtual analog stick.

Sonic CD is also available on Steam, but I'm not sure about Sonic 1 and 2. I think the Steam versions of 1 and 2 are just emulated ones, not Retro Engine ones like Sonic CD.

You could get one of those bluetooth controllers and use it with a cellphone, at least. Some of those are decent.

I hope we get new, better levels from each game. Heroes deserved a better representation then Ocean Palace, same with Colors, Planet Wisp was the worst possible pick. They might take a level out of Lost World now, that would be cool, same with the Rush series. All in all, I have a lot of hope.

And then in the teaser the level they're showing looks a lot like Rooftop Run and hope evaporates :negative:

Honestly I hope there's a reference to the Knuckles raps. Maybe a remix like they did with Super Sonic Racing.

Mania looks really good, it kind of gives me a Sonic CD/Knuckles Chaotix vibe in terms of design. Also since it's made by the same people who worked on the IOS remakes of Sonic 1, CD, and 2 it's almost garunteed that this will both look and play like a Genesis game.

Sonic '17 I'm not sure about, but it is made by the same team that worked on Colors and Generations so I doubt it'll be too terrible. I would like to see some actual gameplay footage from it though.

The percentage of Sonic fans who care about the name change has to be pretty minor by now. I know I started playing the games way after reconciled the names, at SA2.

I'm willing to believe it's like a Bad Future variant of Rooftop Run, and we'd see more ala Sonic CD. Makes sense given the giant Egg Robots walking around the ruined city.

If we assume Classic Sonic means more time travelling tomfoolery, I'm going to hazard a not particularly difficult guess that the trailer is showing a literal bad future and they're going to go back in time to fix things. Hope we get to blow up some giant laser death robots, though.

Less likely item on the wishlist is for Boom Sonic to be playable with Adventure-style gameplay (as opposed to Boom-style gameplay).

First Sonic game I ever played was Sonic 2, first Sonic game I owned was Sonic Mega Collection, first Sonic game I beat was Sonic Adventure 1.

I agree that the Generations version of Ocean Palace was pretty good, but Haunted Mansion or even a good remake of Sky Armada would own bones so hard. Just not the city or the jungle levels.
Or a good remake of a Casino zone, aside from that little secret bit a Casino level was eveyrything Generations was missing. Bingo Highway was pretty good, use that. Even the casino zone in Lost World could work.

One extremely minor thing I don't like about sonic mania & sonic fan games is the super smooth sonic rotating sprite on gentle ramps and loops.

There's something about it that's ugly/cheap looking to me, I kinda like the genesis games' harsher 45° sprite rotations. Anyone else agree/even understand what I'm sayin

I think smooth rotation looks cheap with 16-bit sprites at SD resolutions but in 1080p using 32-bit sprites it looks slick as hell, especially when it's actually discrete frames (as it seems to be here) and not just tweening.
