I'm not a grandpa and I don't get the fascination of watching the latest Hollywood blockbusters on a 5" phone, 7" tablet, laptop, etc. Sure if you're traveling or 14 and watching porn or movies your parents don't want you to watch in your bed at night, sure. Otherwise, I'll stick to streaming Netflix/Hulu/Amazon/Plex to my TV. Also, vcrs were handy for recording, but the tapes degrade so fast after repeated viewings. I "inherited" a large vhs library when I was moved from the middle school to high school and most of the stuff was apparently recorded between 2006-2009 and I'm going to trash all of it when I get back to school next week because the picture on almost all of it looks washed-out, grainy, or audio is weird. I guess it could be the player, but I have digital copies of everything now so screw it. That and rewinding sucks. Kirk Vikernes fucked around with this message at 13:42 on Jul 24, 2016 |

I'm an academic librarian and I'd like to mention that there are a ton of old (yet still relevant) documentaries that have never been digitized or made available on DVD. You'd be surprised how many professors use VCRs for their classes.

I had this problem when I wanted to get some recordings off my HD dvr. The loving thing had USB and firewire ports but they were permanently disabled because someone might pirate Jerry Springer or something. I solved it by buying a Hauppauge PVR1212 and now I have the only copy of Cool As Ice on Blu-ray (seriously). As for vhs, I still have an svhs deck I bought in 2003. I like using s-video when capturing old family videos to DV.

Not everything has made the transition yet.

There's an old VHS tape of a family vacation that starts with me being so happy about Disneyland that I trip over and slam my massive toddler head on the kitchen floor. It would be a shame to lose such fond memories of braining myself. At least I still have my giant shitbrick of a VCR in my closet. Last I checked it was still functioning I've got recorded marathons of shows, but the real treasure is probably whatever commercials they had running back then.

It is kind of weird to think that there will be a time, probably while I am still alive, that there's not a single functioning vcr left on the planet. Especially since they were very prone to breaking to begin with. I had a very difficult time finding an arcade CRT for my cabinet recently. They were easy as hell to find in 2008, for only $50. Now you're lucky to find one without burn in, and you're still looking at $400+. I found a guy who somehow had them brand new and I bought two of them because I know I'll be completely hosed in 15-20 years if I ever need to replace it. I'll digitize all my vhs tapes before I start hoarding vcrs, though.

Uncle at Nintendo posted:Even funnier is they'd only read blue bottomed discs those are cds rather than dvds the ps2 had a single lovely intake fan in the back and narrow slats on the front but they get covered in dust and stop working. there was basically no airflow management on the ps2, just a single chamber with giant fuckoff heat sink sitting next to the drive. you ended up with a lot of dust buildup which hella coats the drive mechanism and laser in dust. dvds require way more accurate laser placement so no surprise that if it gets hosed up it stops reading dvds its easily solvable but if you google the problem you will get a whole bunch of 5 step magic spells that look like they wouldn't fix poo poo but people claim it works. turn it upside down and shake it, lmao.

The only reliable storage medium is the internet. Oh and some like archival sapphire dvds and dumb poo poo like that ill never buy, id rather depend on server farms with redundant replication and constant hardware replacement. They also have hard drives that store data by altering single atoms now that may prove to be hardy, but most neat are the superman data crystals that exist that can literally last as long as the age of the universe. Once those get down to like $19.95 I'm going to shoot one into space with Mods Knew -TDH or something to fufill my mortality fueled desire to leave some sort of lasting impact on the universe, however small.
