My recurring morbid joke about these Olympics is that the best thing you can say about them is that they probably won't be THE worst Olympics ever since Munich has set a really high bar in that regard.

On the other hand, we have:
  • Rampant government corruption
  • State security warring with violent youth gangs
  • Dystopian levels of pollution and disease
Are we absolutely sure there's no secret military laboratory under the OIympic stadium dedicated to creating psychic human weapons? Because they're already like 60% of the way to a reenactment of AKIRA.

Not that high. All you need is a single shoddily build stand to beat Munich (even including the terrorist deaths), and there has already been two deaths related to shoddy construction. Then there's the open sewer which athletes are going to be competing in, which has "1.7 million times the virus levels that would be considered hazardous in Europe or the US", which doesn't bode well for anyone competing there.

Plus as Rangpur mentioned, the whole corruption/police/gang issues, which probably doesn't mix well with potentially valuable kidnapping/robbery targets. I suppose there is also the possibility of ISIS making good on their promises, but that's probably less likely than any of the other issues beating Munich.

A New Zealand sportsman was forced into a car by armed police and made to withdraw the equivalent of $800 in Rio de Janeiro over the weekend, just 13 days before the Olympics are set to start in the city.

The police, who warned him not to report the incident and made efforts to avoid being seen, detained Jason Lee after pulling him off a highway into the city on Sunday.

There's always some amount of fuckery, but selfie guy is a new wrinkle. Usually some protesters will extinguish the torch, they'll quietly relight it with a cigarette lighter or something, and everybody will move on.

In the dumbness of antiquity what actually happens is that with the torch at all times are two lanterns that have also been lit from the torch in Athens that travel with the torch wherever it goes. If the relay torch is extinguished it's relit from one of the two lanterns. Because that's the original flame. Fire not working this way not withstanding.

Its been increasing recently with the big start being Beijing. Lots of people tried to interrupt that one's runs for political reasons and then there were Chinese minders in foreign countries pushing people over and generally being overprotective. It was a big farce a lot of the time.

quote:

The US Olympics Committee has gone off the deep end, when it comes to intellectual property. It’s willing to sue anyone to protect their trademarks, even when the use is no real threat. But the committee’s latest claim is an entirely new level of absurdity.

What’s getting the US Olympics Committee in a tizzy this time? Tweets. Specifically any company that tweets about the Olympic Games and isn’t a sponsor. ESPN obtained a letter from the US Olympic Committee chief marketing officer Lisa Baird who outlines the absurd demands.

“Commercial entities may not post about the Trials or Games on their corporate social media accounts,” Baird writes, apparently in earnest. “This restriction includes the use of USOC’s trademarks in hashtags such as #Rio2016 or #TeamUSA.”

And according to ESPN, it gets even more absurd. Apparently the letter says that any company whose primary mission isn’t media—I guess that excludes us—is forbidden from using any pictures taken at the Olympics, sharing, and even reposting anything from the official Olympics account.

Does that mean that a non-sponsor can’t retweet the official Olympics Twitter account without facing some kind of legal action? I guess there’s only one way to find out. Who’s going to be the first company to try?

NBC, the network that paid about $1.2 billion to broadcast the Olympics, is so keen to maximise the audience for Rio 2016's opening ceremony that it lobbied – unsuccessfully – to change the spectacle's official language from Brazil's native Portuguese to English.

In the traditional Parade of Nations, teams enter the arena in alphabetical order. Switching the languages would have put the United States's 555 athletes near the back, giving American audiences a reason watch the full broadcast. As it is, the team will enter somewhere in the middle, because in Portuguese, the delegation is known as Estados Unidos.

Finallyu found something so insane that even Rio didn't agree to it.

Olympic Torch Is Stolen and Flame Extinguished In Rio By Angry, Protesting Government Workers Who Haven’t Been Paid In Months

“Protests have continued to roil the lead-up to the 2016 Summer Olympics, with the opening ceremony just over a week away. On Wednesday night, government employees angry over delayed salary payments took to the streets in Angra dos Reis, a city near Rio de Janeiro, and confronted the procession carrying one of the Olympic torches.

“Chaotic scenes caught on amateur video show a crowd of young people appearing to steal the torch from the procession and then extinguish it. Local news reports said that the Brazilian military eventually disbanded the protests using tear gas and rubber bullets, and in return were showered with rocks and bricks by the crowd. One child was reportedly injured. The torch relay was temporarily halted.”

Noice.

There's no shortage of rich dictators that want to host the olympics. But in democratic countries where people have a say, it makes very little economic sense.

edit:

quote:

The IOC has been in a similar position before, after the disastrous Montreal Games in 1976. It took Montreal 30 years to pay off its Olympic debt. The upshot was that Los Angeles was the only city in for 1984. Because it was the only bidder, it was able to dictate terms. So the IOC was cut out of all the TV and sponsorship deals but it was able to turn to the sizeable profits LA made to its own advantage in other ways. It used it to incentivise other cities to bid. Five applied to host in 1992. Eight in 2000. Eleven in 2004. The IOC became “a monopoly rights holder of a business that seeks to extract rent from cities”, as Gaffney puts it. “They depend on having a group of cities competing against each other, raising the stakes.”

Would be nice to see a return to that, right now the IOC dictates way too much poo poo.
