Alright. One more shot at this. I just bought a couple monitors (34" and 24"). I would like to mount the 24 above the 34. What is a good reasonably priced desk mount for doing so?

I don't think there are any quite as good as the best IPS. I think a good VA vs a decent IPS is reasonably close, just see if you can get a number for input lag. Less good ones are dominated by the scaler so they're all equally out of the running for twitch.

I'm going to jump into this discussion with a reminder about something:

AU Optronics, who make panels for a number of different display manufacturers, calls their IPS implementation AHVA, but it has no relation to a VA panel, and is just branding to avoid using the IPS trademark. Same deal as Samsung's PLS, but with a much more confusing acronym.

This is especially important because AU Optronics and LG are the only panel makers in the >60Hz IPS space right now and it can get confusing.

So far I had a good first-time experience on an open box monitor when I purchased an XB240H. Where exactly did you purchase your monitor from?

OK, so after doing some research I've decided to get a 27" 2560x1440 monitor. I only play the occasional game so I don't need anything specialised for gaming - I've been using a Dell 2405FPW and have no complaints just to give you an idea of my expectations. Any recommendations on models/brands I should look at?

I'm kind of annoyed that there is not a single monitor on the market that is IPS and 144hz and 1080p and G-Sync. There are TN monitors at that resolution, and really pricey 1440p ones that are IPS, but having experienced either extreme for myself I'd really rather have 1080p with a mega high refresh rate than the reverse.

If it's the XB241h then that's a TN panel, although it's so much fairer priced than some of the premium options that it seems pretty attractive. Seems to be out of stock everywhere though.

If youre talking about the z35 ultrawide. That monitor costs quite a bit and that 1080 resolution is stretched quite a bit on a screen that big. I think hes talking more a long the lines of 24-27" 144hz 1080 g sync ips monitor

I feel the same way, and on top of that, the 1080p tn g-sync panels are so overpriced that it's not much of a jump to go to the 144hz ips 1440p 27 inch panels with g-sync. Considering that the 27 incher ips' are all around 700 bucks USD, it's just... eugh.

That's freesync. I don't know if these are comprehensive lists but they're handy for narrowing down your options based on the specs you're looking for. No 24" 1080p 144Hz IPS *sync monitors sadly. You'd think that would be a prime spot in the market but apparently not.

It seems like most manufacturers are betting on 1080p probably getting phased out in the next couple years, but to my eyes at least, pushing super high refresh rates on a card that's maybe a little overqualified for 1080p eclipses the better resolution.

Is a gtx1060 too little card for a XB271hu? I don't really want to drop $400 on a videocard when i'm also buying a $700 monitor, that stretches the budget a little too much.

They can hope all they like but 95% of the monitors out there are 1080p or less. Unless the prices of 1440p monitors and cards with enough juice to drive them come way down, HD is going to be dominant for another few years. That's plenty long enough to make manufacturing 1080p 144Hz IPS adaptive sync monitors worthwhile.

SCheeseman
Apr 23, 2003

1440p is the current sweet spot. 4K is overkill for the moment, too expensive for little gain and a whole bunch of performance drawbacks. On the other hand even a lowly RX480 or GTX1060 can push 1440p with little compromise (which is also the answer to Fellis' question).

Though with the way HMD tech is progressing, I'm not sure how much longer monitors and TVs will be around. I give it maybe a decade before they're the primary way we consume content.

Magic Leap will likely be roughly the same form factor as sunglasses thanks to some very clever engineering.

This is a good rundown of the tech: http://gpuofthebrain.com/blog/2016/7/22/how-magic-leap-will-work

I'm not talking strictly about VR, more broadly AR. What would you choose: A bulky fixed resolution, fixed size screen that you can't move and is only capable of flat imagery, or the capability to display whatever you want anywhere? It means everyone will have to use their own device in the living room but hey, everyone has a smartphone already, right?

CloFan
Nov 6, 2004

I'm with you on that. In the not-too-distant future, having a TV in your house will seem antiquated. Maybe some will still be around for group viewing, but once AR is as ubiquitous as smartphones the massive display business is going away.

It's kind of borderline but I think that's a solid plan. You'll have the monitor much longer than any video card so put the money there first. Worst case scenario you have to turn the settings down a bit (it will still look gorgeous) and keep an eye out for a better GPU once newer games start to bog it down.

The 1060 will waffle from 30-60ish FPS at 1440p in most games but you will need to actively play with detail toggles and turn stuff down. Even in Witcher 3 its problematic in many areas like cities. GSync helps with tearing but you'll still notice when the framerate dips to the 20s no matter what. If you want a stable 60fps at 1440p you need to go with a 1070.

Quick question about resolution crts and lcds. I remember games back when I was younger looking a lot crisper. For instance if I emulate street fighter 3rd strike it looks fairly bad on my 24 inch wide screen, while keeping aspect ratio. However I swear arcade crts make the game look better. Despite the fact that the CRT screen is bigger than the active area on my monitor.

I'm fairly sure the only thing that matters is pixel density, so I think the difference is all in my mind.

In a lot of those older 2D games there is a lot of smoothing and and upscaling going on because of the difference in resolution between the game's native display resolution and the fixed resolution of the LCD screen, this results in the game looking a lot less sharp than it could on a good CRT which can dynamically scale resolution/pixel size.

There's surprisingly many factors. For example older games were designed explicitly to take advantage of how the screen worked (blending nearby colours, certain dither patterns etc). And unlike LCDs, CRTs can actually display black and often have a very good contrast level. Only a VA LCD would compare.

I think there are people who make shaders to emulate the original effect faithfully, might be worth a look.

Long story short Third Strike uses tall rectangle pixels, so it doesn't scale smoothly on to a square pixel display. It's 384x224 resolution, which is a 12:7 aspect ratio, displayed on a 4:3 screen. 384x288 would be the correct 4:3 resolution. CRTs can get away with that but that means the usual lazy "multiply each pixel X times in both dimensions" tactic for scaling to a fixed resolution display doesn't work correctly and you end up with blurriness on the vertical dimension as it tries to display pixels with a 7:9 aspect ratio.

Of course if you have a sufficiently high resolution display that you can actually scale each game pixel to 7x width and 9x height, it should look great. If I'm mathing correctly that's 2688x2016, so a 2160p "4K" display should be able to display this game (or any of the other numerous arcade games that also used this resolution on 4:3 CRTs) at the correct aspect ratio without any loss of quality from scaling.

Thanks for the replies about the 1060/1070 everyone. I'm probably going to wait for a month or two (maybe black friday) to see if prices go down at all and maybe get a raise and save up a bit more.

What's the best place to get a cheaper XB271hu? I saw the price was down to ~$700 on amazon recently. I know there's the acer refurb store on ebay, but i couldn't see a way to set up an alert through mobile. Do they have another online refurb place on the acer site or is it all done through ebay? I'm kind of leery of 3rd party for refurb/used.

Just got this and had zero QC issues. Back light bleed wasn't bad at all and only had one bad pixel that wasn't fixed by "unsticking" and it shows red and green fine but no blue so it isn't even noticeable unless you're staring at a blue screen looking for it.

Just order from someplace with a good return policy imo but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the display.

I feel like sitting for long periods puts a lot of strain on your knees and joints. Even standing stationary at work I feel like my knees feel much less stiff when I do activities than after sitting all day.

Its still sedentary but I feel much better than sitting on my rear end for hours.
