I like My Hero Academia but the underlying message is kind of problematic. The main character isn't satisfied with being himself because society tells him that he is no good as who he is. Only when he is given powers by the best hero this ever was is his life turned towards the better but spends the entire time trying to prove to everyone and society he is worth something. What kind of message is that? You're nothing until your betters give you a position of status and power? Conform to what society expects of you?
Isn't that Japan.txt where you're expected to conform to society the moment you leave high school?

I've watched his stuff on SAO, and by extension his videos on Asterisk War which also seems pretty wretched. I like what I've seen (or heard in the case of his SAO season 1 review) although he does noticeably steal/borrow gags from YourMovieSucks and Plinkett at times, I'm willing to cut him some slack because he does cop to it, and they're still decent gags and delivered well.

Speaking of delivery, his speaking style is very clear in both the sense that his voice isn't cringe inducing and in the sense that he conveys his ideas and meanings very well.

All in all I like what I've seen so far, seems pretty neat.

The pompousness with trying to back out on his Statement on Iron Fortress as aots to "dumb fun" is annoying and pure backpedal. You can't actually know the quality of an anime in the first episode, the fact that tons of twist anime and others mess with their story structure in the first 3 episodes kind of disproves that. He also called Re:Zero "literally SAO." He is dirt to me and :bravo2:

I like him but yea his hilarious backdown on Iron Fortress was great.

I think he's one of the better anime reviewers but yea, he tends to assume his literal very first impression is always right and that's a weird thing to do when so many animes use their first episode to just establish a pile of plot threads and all.

Speaking of animes, who do you guys go to for internet anime critics that aren't absolute garbage people, I can always use more of those

Akett

Dude, he's got a whole series of videos talking about his stance on first episodes and it boils down to the fact that the first episode of an anime will tend to have writing indicative of the whole. Even if it's being coy about the premise or the structure the flaws in the writing will still show up.

Mother's Basement and Under the Scope Reviews tend to be pretty good anime reviewers from what I've seen.

I say this because there were actually people in the USPOL/DNC threads in D&D that were hoping he'd do it just to see what a gong show it is--4% on Rotten Tomaotes, btw.

Of course, I'm of the mindset that one can and should get used to someone's accent that they initially find unpleasant, rather than rejecting it out of hand. I think everyone, to some level, thinks of some accents as less pleasant than others, but that's not a fair judgment to make.

Yeah, that's why nearly every anime/manga is about high school and earlier. It's before their dreams died. There's a few very good shows about college years (Tatami Galaxy) and post-school aimlessness (Devil is a Part Timer and arguably One Punch Man) but they're few and far between.

Hey H.Bomb, I noticed you had a clip of SomeGreyBloke in one of your videos, which is surprising because he hasn't made a thing in years and I don't think he's ever talked about the kind of idiots you do. I can't find it because it's like a second long and I can't remember which video it was in, but what was up with that? Am I horribly misremembering?

This is kind of a rant but the Dunning-Kruger effect seems like a vehicle for people to be smug about other smug people who think they're right. Or maybe I am exactly the kind of person the Dunning-Kruger effect describes. One way to phrase "incompetent people tend to overestimate their competence while more competent people underestimate theirs" is "expected competence goes down as competence goes up." The null hypothesis being "expected competence is flat as actual competence goes up." But if the null hypothesis is right, incompetent people will overestimate their competence, and more competent people will underestimate theirs. This is a problem for actually testing the thing.

The graph in the video was their first test, on humor. Participants were given jokes, asked to rate the jokes, and to estimate how well they rated the jokes (how funny the jokes "actually" were was determined by a panel of professional comedians.) Actual competence (measured as a percentile) was a straight line up, while expected competence was a flattish line that was also going up. Competence and expected competence were actually correlated (not greatly, but it was statistically significant). It's worth noting that basically everyone expected themselves to be above average, which means that the most deviated were the ones well below average. The other tests had similar results: participants being given a thing, participants consistently ranking themselves above average on a flattish line, the ones well below average being the most wrong. The authors treat this this as somehow unexpected. It got an Ig Nobel and a wiki page and "so stupid they don't know they're stupid, science says so" is part of internet pop-psychology now.

Yeah, the effect is brought up a lot to the point that invoking Dunning-Kruger is something you'll get made fun of for in a lot of circles. I just felt it was specifically worth bringing up because of the whole 'I don't know and I don't care' thing.

Somegreybloke and I are pals. He got me my first proper freelance work. I got him to record that line for the video because I thought it would be funny. We might have something else in the works, actually.
