Did you have to LB2 to get through Fang + Claw? You're not really supposed to do that, though it can cover for a mistake with orbs (it can't cover for low DPS, since if your DPS is low enough that you need to LB the fang, you won't make enrage anyway).

The EX Primals that do piss you off (gently caress right off, Ramuh)
Crafting (not cause I don't do it, because you should just wait til 60)

Caveat: I'd start the beastmen quests. They're not as rewarding as the others, but they're daily quests, so you may as well get started now. One of them is for crafting, too, so you should probably put at least that much effort into crafting. Unless you just want to skip the beastmen quests altogether - all you really miss out on is a few minions and mounts and some easy level 4 materia.

Yup. Chocobos are weird bad old spaghetti code that have been filed away as "more trouble than they're worth to gently caress with".

Both for the devs and the players, for that matter!

It used to be worse, originally you couldn't use your choco mount when you had your choco companion out, you had to dismiss it manually every time.

And there was also a time where if you had your companion summoned you couldn't use any other mount until it was dismissed.

Most of my favourite patch notes each cycle since I started playing have been small changes to the companion system like that.

On the other hand, you still can't talk to npcs while dismounting, not because you're on a chocobo, but because you actually count as having "jumping" status while jumping off your chocobo. An oddly specific implementation.

Regarding companions, I wonder if they'll ever get around to implementing non-chocobo companions and the gambit-like system they said they were hoping to add? It sounds like a lot of work, especially if the old code is as impenetrable as everyone's making it out to be, but at the same time... programmable pets and battle buddies. Hard to say no to that.

I think I recall a bit back that Yoshi-P mentioned at least wanting to allow your Magitek Armor being a companion. If it's a unique one or just a replacement for the chocobo is still a mystery.

I imagine turning the current Companion menu into a submenu with a list of your available companions would be the easiest part of making that change. No matter what they do, it seems like they've got a long road ahead of them if they genuinely intend to try and fix what's broken there.

But I mean, that's kind of been the challenge all along, hasn't it? Even starting from the beginning of ARR, they've been trying to take what's present and turn it into something fun. But of course, the hardest part of that is that they aren't willing or able to completely gut anything and rebuild it; the most obvious example of that is the Class/Job system, which Yoshi-P has gone on record as saying he doesn't care for. He couldn't just dump it, since it was there already and players had invested in it, even if it was dumb and bad. So he did what he could, which was to try and rework it into something approaching fun.

Personally I would have said gently caress it and dumped the DoW/DoM classes back in 2.0 (with the in-game excuse that the more focused jobs had overtaken their use within the guilds and thus outright replaced them) and then gone even further to piss people off by allowing a subjob with limited ability options rather than the piecemeal cross-class abilities present now. But I'm also not a director with a full team, investors and a giant player base to worry about pleasing.

Spoiler: They don't intend to try and fix what's broken.

They could easily dump classes at this point, and I hope they do. It's a trivial software change (in theory), the only difficult decision gameplay wise is how to handle the difference between class quests and job quests. I don't see any reason why it couldn't be done, though.
I don't think they will address this though until they address MSQ length. That will almost definitely be a hack solution like a leveling potion, and the details of its implementation will determine if/how they're able to modify the class/job system. I do think they'll do something, though, I just don't see them adding a game-selling SAMURAI job and then telling new players they'll have to fight through years worth of story quests before they can even begin the new job.

I mean, my understanding was that most job quests bounce between a few questgivers anyway. Scholar has you pal around with Alka Zolka from 30-50, then switch to Surito Carito 50-60. Hamon could easily be the 1-30 Monk, since he's already the 1-30 Pugilist. Since my suggestion was literally just to drop classes for jobs full-time, all they would have needed to do was switch out any mention of "pugilist" for "monk." But I always meant it as a "what if" scenario, since obviously that wasn't the choice they made.

For future jobs, yeah, it's just a matter of placing their questgivers in areas that people without Heavensward can access and making them accessible once you've gotten any class to level 30. I feel like that shouldn't even be a question.

Klades
Sep 8, 2011

In theory you could eliminate classes on the back end while maintaining the illusion of classes on the front end by having each job's name and icon be the class name and icon until you finish the job quest at level 30. The only real changes for players would be things like no longer seeing "you can X pugilist experience" while on monk, having fewer crossclass options while leveling pre-30, and maybe not missing out on job actions when doing PotD as a class you don't have the job for yet. They would have to figure out what to do about scholar, of course, but they could just make it work like the three HW jobs do as far as "this is a job that starts at 30 automatically". Then they could add more differences between SCH and SMN if they wanted to, as well.

But in reality, who knows what kind of horrors exist in this game's codebase. Making a change like this could be really simple, or it could be a monstrous task that will break a lot of things and require enough time and effort that it doesn't rank very high on the to-do list. They have finite development resources, after all.

I'm not too certain about making the new jobs accessible as soon as you hit 30 in ARR areas. While I haven't played Machinist and Astrologian yet, at the very least the writing for the Dark Knight questline takes full advantage of you having gone through the ARR msq first and I feel like future jobs could similarly use the ability to be absolutely sure of what the player has done.

It's in need of fixing in the 'we'd like to do more with this but it takes a lot of effort to do and we're restricted by it' sense rather than the 'it's broken and doesn't work correctly' sense. The latter has higher priority than the former, but the former is more important for long-term gameplay.

From what we understand, the problem is the backend of having essentially 2 classes being saved per class, minus the heavensward classes. Like, you're both a pugilist and a monk, and the game has to save the data for both. Being able to cut out the base class would save on space or some poo poo.

Also there's no reason not to just allow people to start as a samurai or whatever like ninja, because not letting people play the cool job they want to play from the start is dumb.

No? It really doesn't have much to do with you having done the MSQ first? And even if it was, that's a really bad reason for making new players level 2 classes because they want to play one of them. Which is also why I hate cross class in all its forms, but that's another issue.
