That's still a lot more generous than most games' gatchas, which don't have any way to earn new content free in-game at all.

The difference is the regular gear can be earned by playing and you'll get what you want eventually. The only question is which loot box will spit out the Skin/Pose/Highlight Intro you're hoping for. The Seasonal items are only available from Loot Box rolls, and for a relatively short period of time, so the only real way to see them if you want them is to keep slapping coins in the slot and pulling that lever hoping for triple-7's. And by that point you may as well just go buy scratch-and-win lottery tickets with your money for the same kind of odds.

I feel very strongly that Zarya's and Lucio's Olympic skins are their best skins by far, and that also McCree's and Genji's are awesome, and thus they are not bad. I will derail this thread about it for pages, that's how passionate i am about this.

For getting better at the game, there are tons of top-500 players who stream on twitch regularly. One subtle thing you can pick up from them if you watch closely is when they decide to engage versus back off and regroup. It's amazing how big of a difference it makes getting a team to engage 6v6 instead of just trickling into 3v6 fights constantly. Get a sense of when you should be pursuing and when you shouldn't and you'll suddenly feel much better at this game.

They've stated that they're working on new maps in some developer interview stream or something, some of them are close to finalized and some are still in the development stage.

Actually it is a very calculated money grab. It's all a matter of degree. They had the entire spectrum of models to choose from, from "everyone gets everything for free instantly" (no profit, huge goodwill) to "special crates that you must buy and can't get from levelling, items can't be crafted" (biggest profit, huge loss of goodwill). And everything in between.

They very specifically chose a model that has no upper limit on the amount of crates you might have to open to get a specific item. That doesn't happen by accident. This offends some people's sensibilities and doesn't offend others. Personally I find it pretty ungenerous, especially in a full-price game.

It's true that TF2 does look absolutely bizarre nowadays. I think it's because they handed the game over to a completely different set of guys. Valve's structure being what it is and the fact that its 8 years old and CSGO/DOTA2 are much more popular means they don't need to care. It's that apathy and the latest update that caused me to buy Overwatch and I think hat was a really good idea.

It feels like Valve has basically given up on making games. To be fair why should they? They own the biggest online distribution.

But that's the new model right? Micro-transactions are here to stay, they're a little bit of a bummer but these are all cosmetic and don't affect gameplay. I like that you can't purchase them with coins, it makes the ones I see seem unique.

As far as ungenerous, players received a free character last month and are going to receive a new character sometime soon. That's some DLC they've given up for free, I'm not one to defend business practices but these seem pretty harmless.

Protesting against this is like decrying how cars have a base model and cost more for power windows and poo poo though, it's just how it is. Being a pack of loving whiners about it is asinine, and pretending it's a moral stance doubly so. It is a prevalent business model and human nature will make it an effective one.

If it really offends you morally, just don't have a leather interior and no one will give a gently caress and you can feel good about yourself.

Your car analogy is completely wrong. It's more like paying ford $100 each for mystery features that are pulled out of a hat after you pay. Maybe you get power windows or maybe you get chrome rims. Maybe you even get chrome rims TWICE, but it's OK because you get fordbux in lieu (fordbux cannot be used to buy power windows).

This argument wouldn't be happening if you could simply pay a set price for a skin like you can for power windows.

To reuse the car analogy, the color and body kits on cars don't change how they function and yet people are very willing to pay for looks. I don't think you can credibly deny that people value looks, in cars, vidcons and beyond. Maybe you don't, but many people do.

If this wasn't Blizzard I would agree with those concerns. But Blizzard, to me, as proven that their art department is basically one of the best in the industry. Even if Overwatch were to go F2P in the future (which I don't think it will) the hat thing isn't something that would become a problem like it did in TF2. They care A LOT about each character looking distinct (the whole silhouette thing in WoW for example, I can't imagine how much internal debate there was over adding in the dual-faction Pandaren) and even if the game were to go F2P I don't see them changing their philosophy there.

I mean, it's not like Valve got where they are without being able to pick and choose some of the best artists in the industry either. The original art documents for DotA 2 are really interesting and based on some principles that got thrown out within 2 years in the name of hat money.

Brannock posted:

2) The skins and stuff are fine so far and Blizzard has their additional content on lockdown (we will never, ever see community-submitted content that hasn't been completely remade by the Blizzard team) so I don't think it's a concern, but this sort of poo poo is how Dota 2 and TF2 started out, even right down to people going "Yo stfu why are you worried about a few silly cosmetic items :xd: more HATZ gaben!!" and then a few years down the line the game goes F2P and any sense of visual coherency goes to poo poo. So I'm very slightly mildly concerned about what this stuff could become down the line.

See, I can put up with that even if it gets out of control. I had a few instances of "ah, gently caress, is that a courier?" when I saw a new treant model from a Nature's Prophet skin. I had a few moments of non-instant hero recognition that got me killed and threw a game. That's -okay- because I accept that the game needs the cosmetics to survive, but I've also seen it lead to this stuff, where the cosmetics have an actual impact on gameplay

http://dota2.gamepedia.com/The_International_2016_Battle_Pass#Quests

and it's not a good thing for the game, either

I don't know, I kind of miss when you bought a game and enjoyed it and could go back and play the same game again and not much if anything had changed. If I wanted to go back and play "original" dota, that's pretty hard, "original" dota 2 is probably downright impossible, as would be "original" league of legends or any other multiplayer games made in the past decade. I guess it is the reality of games today that they all mutate and change until it's no longer something I'm interested in. This is me being a grumpy old man about video games, though.
