Patter Song posted:1928electoralmap.jpg The nominal liberal/conservative ideological split between the parties is comparatively new. GOP/Dem was more management/labor oriented back then. 19th century, the Republicans were the party of progressivism and civil rights. Democrats were laissez faire proto-libertarians. WWI started a trend of Republicans being more pro-business, Dems being more pro-labor, which FDR solidified. Truman began to take the civil rights mantle from the Republicans, which accelerated with JFK and became complete with Johnson. The Dixiecrats revolted in '48 as a result, but remained nominally Democrat due to their labor ties while looking for a way out. Wallace's success in '68 and '72 showed they were willing to switch loyalties, which became the Southern Strategy implemented initially with Nixon and completed with Reagan. As a result, the Republicans became the party of privilege - be it white, religious, or guns - assembling a coalition of single-issue voters with Reagan. That has produced a party of ideological nutters, due to the stroking of their manias. The Democrats have become the party of everything else - nominally liberal, but more the party of good government and pragmatism.

Mr. Bergman said he had previously viewed Mr. Trump as a “loose cannon like a fox” — calculating his inflammatory comments to drive his message.
