I learned by doing the first three basic tutorials and then Operation Bayern. It's a good simple scenario that shows off carrier operations circa 1964 without the bullshit of Vietnam. As a bonus if you screw up and lose a ship your consolation prize is the key to the Hancock's nuclear arsenal :getin:

(it also taught me that Skyraiders are in fact more than capable at sinking Soviet warships and that "day-only" loadouts are still pretty good at night lol)

The problem with the submarines appears to be connected to the presets and the commanders not knowing how cavitation works or that they should attempt to remain quiet. 1975 is within the 'keeping quiet' era.

Northern Inferno, Goblins on the Doorstep.

It's a bit quick, I wasn't about to edit it down from the 6 or so minutes it takes under 1x.

Select the Revenge, F3, set a course north-west, <esc>, f2, uncheck 'manual', sit back and watch.

I like the addition of the cavitation speed indicator, as it's useful for me, but you'll see the sub commander just lose his poo poo at one point and head out at cruise (12 knots) whilst 'sneaking' out of harbour. Cavitation, and the AsuW trawler is on your rear end.

The AI will also bounce a bit between creep and cruise, seemingly playing chicken with the cavitation limit, but always just going 'gently caress lol' and flooring it like a hotrod.

_This_ is why I micromanage.

I'd love a 2x speed as well. 5x is a bit a jump from 1x.

There's a logic to just cruising if you set a course since the idea is you care more about getting there in a timely fashion than stealth but it does make dealing with large sub formations annoying

My "Cold War Fantasy" involves an early end to the second world war when the USSR develops nuclear weapons, and captures germany and western europe mostly intact & allies with japan. Its August 1952, and a combined Soviet/Japanese/French/German task force is building an airfield on Guadalcanal to cut the sea-line-of-communication between US and Australia, and the marines have to capture guadal!

Its set in 1952 with early 1960s technology with WWII 1942 battlelines (UK uncaptured, fighting in the pacific, burma, china, australia etc)

I use single unit airbases to keep the simulation running quickly, also because the main mode of land attack is nuclear!

This leads to 1950s carrier battles between Soviet/Japanese combined fleets and USN/UK's finest!

I just noticed that the CMFB patch 1.01 fixes the posture of German half-track passengers, so their heads don't stick way up over the sides in such a ridiculous way anymore, exposing them to fire.

I remember bitching about that on the Battlefront forum a long time ago. There was a flame war with the die hard grognard loyalists who always insist there's nothing wrong with the game. Battlefront listened though! It only took them five games to do it! :woop:

Well, the UI is merely just standard grog bad now instead of "WHAT THE gently caress IS THIS poo poo" bad of OpStar. Although the campaign map still has nothing but absolute disdain for your need to know things like: What type of armored vehicle is in this unit? Is it it a halftrack? a Tiger Tank? A group of goofy looking pedestrians that at one point had a vehicle? (not joking, this happened to me several times).

I like it though because its a more hands off battlefront game with a decent campaign system and awesome visuals.

It was necessary to start winning major land battles but tying the army to the will of the state and not a man was something they were struggling with until a few hundred years ago, can't really fault classical rome for failing to find the perfect solution.

See, I thought that was Marius, too; guess you're not the only idiot. Problem with remembering the history of Rome is that there's so drat much of it

Going back to the AJE Marius vs. Sulla (vs. Mithridates) scenario: My favorite part of it is how Sulla gets a Lucullus unit who can go around to the Roman allies and borrow a navy. It was just such a fun little minigame in the scenario, especially since you can lose a navy to the weather at any drat moment. Really made for some hard decisions and some nail-biting turns

Yeah, it's me. I'm the guy biting my nails in a turn-based game

So my long-term PBEM opponent, Lockmart Lawndart, has retired and while Saros is kicking my rear end, we only mange 1-2 turns a week.

I'm looking for a new PBEM partner to help scratch my WitP:AE itch, playing the Japanese side using the Focus Pacific mod that I developed with support from the AE community. Focus Pacific by default has Soviets active, which makes things more challenging as the Japanese, but if you're a new player we can use an alternate version that has Soviets off, which should make things significantly less challenging.

My game with Saros has been plagued by economic issues on the Japanese side, but since then the Japanese economy has been significantly revamped. In the new version Japan is 85% self sufficient for resources, with 15% needing to come from new expansion. Transportation of that additional 15% is made possible by large increases to the number of transport ships available, along with additional escorts for those ships. Additional aircraft reinforcements, aviation support and other quality of life improvements to the Japanese side have also been added.

Anyone up for a game?

I think Focus Pacific with active Soviets off would qualify - it frees up a lot of AV and aircraft that you can use elsewhere.

You can always declare on the Soviets after a month or two!

Our game should speed up now, it's just the Japanese turns have so many moving pieces at once they take an age to play. Not having to plan/manage two major amphibous offensive operations and three land wars (in asia even) simultaneously should definitely smooth things out.
