The AVS (built-from-the-ground-up NES/Famicom like the Analog NT) should be going up for pre-order today for $189USD.

The difference is that the ANT uses the original CPU/PPU and the AVS uses... something else? SOAC? FPGA?

So the Analogue NT is gutting original NES's for their chips?

That feels wrong somehow.

Not sure. I'm pretty sure it's not parts from gutted consoles, but at the same time it's apparently not an FPGA solution or anything like that.

Here's a video of it in action, the sound is wrong, right?

Yeah, and some people got super-mad about it, although they claim their parts are sourced from badly junked machines where not much else in them works.

How is the 3D gamepad for Saturn? I'm really impressed by the standard Saturn gamepads, they're my favourite, so I'm thinking about buying one of those as well. They look goofy & cool.

It's basically the Dreamcast controller, so if you like those you'll like the 3D pad.

It's good for what it is, but the 3D stick isn't terribly compatible with that many games. It works great with games that explicitly support it well like Nights and Burning Rangers, but it's really awful when it comes to controlling the games that it's "technically" compatible with, like racing games or Panzer Dragoon. But if you need a second controller, it's got a better D-Pad than the original garbage USA Saturn controller, and it's a gaming buddy's preferred controller for Saturn fighting games, so it's definitely not a bad thing to own. It feels comfortable enough in the hands, anyway.

If you are going to play games that use it I'd say go for it with the caveat that the standard pad is going to be much more comfortable for everything else. You can't beat the perfection of the regular pad basically, but hopefully someone who actually plays more Saturn than I do can weigh in.

I like the Dreamcast controller but the Saturn 3D pad seems slightly more comfortable.

Saturn controller is def my favorite "classic" controller. It's like a larger, better feeling SNES controller and I wish the Genesis came with the 6-button style out of the gate.

I spent a lot of time with an MSX2 at a vintage computer show this weekend and now I want one real bad. My heart is in the Famicom/PC Engine era of games, and this feels like the missing link for me.

Anyone have experience with the system? It seems like I should be able to play just about anything with an MSX2 and a flash cart, but there are so many options I'm getting confused. I also don't know if I need a 2+ if all I care about is playing real games from back then?

dude I used to have an MSX2 setup and a shitload of games and sold it all when I lost my job a few years ago, it's so loving upsetting now. you generally don't need a 2+, just get something like a panasonic fs-a1 and a flashcart

the fs-a1 looks entirely affordable, gently caress I don't need another system but I've always wanted an MSX, they look like the cyberdeck I always dreamed of owning

It's not a SCART switch, per se, it's a JP-21 switch (which is wired differently). I can't speak to its quality, but to use it you would have to either get JP-21 cables for your consoles or get some cable convertors.

Digging through old amiga magazine scans on archive.org and

That's kind of the PC I had in 1994. My Amiga 500 detonated one of the CIA chips around that time. Would have been fun to have.

486DX66 PCs were £999+ at the time and still kinda weak compared to the 1987 Amiga 500 on the audiovisual side when it came to it.

Jeez, was that 999 pounds with a monitor included? You could get big-brand 486DX2 66 MHz systems in the states in 1994 for about $1800 all in with a 1280x1024 capable monitor, speakers, modem, and a bunch of software, or about $1000 without the monitor or any software beyond the OS.

(or if you were crazy, a comparable performance mac for $4500. :v:)

Played through most of AM2R last night, definitely glad I got it before the DMCA crap made finding it a pain in the rear end. There's honestly no reason to play the original Metroid II now that this exists.

The game does not pull its punches though, I've been playing on Easy and a few parts still consistently wreck my poo poo.
