I forget if the Advent-MEC rocket thing shreds armour.

Still, I haven't noticed Jade getting heavily bombed with his Bulwark SPARK on streams.

But Jade DOES need to go big with Overdrive more.

Whoa whoa whoa hold the gently caress up, turrets are hard? All you have to do is destroy the 1 square they're on and they die. They're never on the ground, they can always fall.

Turrets are a zero threat enemy. That is a first.

Unless it changes on the Commander and you can't destroy terrain and I just never knew that.

Wow, I didn't realize in Commander you face like half the robots you would do in Legendary. That starting section has 4 turrets, so hacking one to draw the fire is usually a good idea. Then after activating the Spark, so many turrets and robots spawn it becomes a real rush to make it to the elevators without anyone dying. Thankfully there's a lot of places you can put your soldiers to avoid the turret sights. Best you can do is make sure the Spark doesn't take a load of damage like a fuckin' moron.

It's not the Spark I'm worried about if someone's taking cover behind it and they eat an AoE.

The rocket does shred; so do their normal shots. So do grenades. Several enemies we haven't seen can shred, some of them even two points at once, maybe more, I dunno.

Sure, it'll help keep the Spark alive a bit longer, but in mid or late game that means one point less damage per mission, due to most everything being able to shred. Granted, ideally you wouldn't be being shot at anyway... Which is why I'd rather have extra actions that don't get an aim penalty, it helps with killing everything else first.

Pretty much this. Having two of your units close together has an almost guaranteed chance of an enemy using AoE attacks, which shred or just plain hurt like hell and won't miss. By spreading out and keeping the pressure up (read: more shooting them) you increase the chance of them just bailing or overwatching, therefore not making attempts on your soldier's lives at all.

OK so me, I'm a dumbass who came here for the first time with...

Ballistics
Basic armour
No Ranger
No Medkits
No means to shred armour beyond the very limited explosives I had, which were pretty much all used up before I got to the SPARK.
On Commander Ironman.

... miraculously nobody died until I got after the point Jade left us at. But I did get through... with no grenades remaining, and most importantly, the SPARK at only 2HP since I'd let him tank a lot of damage trying to get to the elevators.

Thanks to that last bit of info, I can confirm that if the spark dies the mission restarts... from the last checkpoint. With my spark stuck at 2HP. I tried for four hours to get past the next bit, which I will not spoil beyond garbled screaming. I did not succeed. RIP that Ironman game. I'm a dumbass.

Operation Lost Tower Part 3

The team has secured the SPARK and seen Raymond Shen's last recorded message, it's time to get out of here. Our heroes race to the roof to evac but are met by a great big surprise as Julian tries to stop them.

Seriously, a freaking sectopod? That was a surprise the first time I did the mission. I guess I might have expected something like that, some sort of boss fight with Julian using a big robotic body, but at this early in the game I didn't expect a sectopod. Let alone a 90 HP 6 armor sectopod. That sure was a daunting moment when I first had to do this mission. When you're not prepared for it you may be low on shred items and suddenly have a hard time cracking the sectopods massive layers of armor. However if you are ready for it, you can spend the first turn lobbing everything you have at it and then having the SPARK and maybe a grenadier use their normal weapons to shred the rest of its armor off. And once the panic of 'sectopod, oh gently caress' wears off you may realize Julian has a particularly old and lovely sectopod that while it has a massive amount of HP and armor over regular sectopods, it isn't nearly as dangerous. Julian's sectopod has much worse aim and lower damage per shot than sectopods we will encounter much later in the game. Julian also doesn't have the area bombardment skill that sectopods have, or at least I've never seen him use it in the 4 or 5 times I've cleared this DLC. The boss fight is pretty cool and can be challenging, but largely depends on how many soldiers you bring and how well armed they are. If you can come in with a six man squad with magnetics you are sure to be able to have enough fire power to make the fight a short one. I hate to label the fight like so, but it really is a bit of a damage race. The faster you can kill Julian the less trouble you will have with the respawning waves of derelict bots and the less time you give Julian to do some sort of BS like he did to Lobster, or just go stomping over where ever you are using as cover and flank shot people.

Guava makes some mention to items that can make the boss fight easier, and if I hadn't rushed things it might have been a good idea to go get them first. The other DLC scan sight offers a few unique weapons, one of which being a freeze grenade. It's easy to imagine how freezing an enemy for a turn or two can make tough fights much much easier. The problem is that the freeze grenade doesn't work so well on things like sectopods. Instead of freezing them for turns, it merely costs them a single action, half a turn. You trade a grenadiers action for Julian's. This might actually not be so bad and give you a window of opportunity, but it is by no means necessary for this particular fight.

Rangers: Conceal vs Run & Gun

I would like to just say Run & Gun, end of story, move on. However some people have spoken up with how they enjoy using a scout ranger to be a Phantom and be a permanent scout on missions. And while I won't say that is a tactic I find necessary I will at least admit that Conceal is a skill choice that further enables that option. So this skill choice comes down to the question of do you want your ranger to be more powerful in combat, or do you want them to be a phantom scout and stay concealed as much as possible. That's all you need to ask to pick which one is the right skill for your ranger.
While Phantom and Conceal have some pretty obvious synergy going for them, it may be less obvious that Run & Gun and Shadowstep are also a very powerful combination. This combo allows a ranger to be a powerful overwatch breaker, able to close a long distance and shoot a target to remove over watch and free up your squad to move and re-position with out risk. This goes on top of all the other utility that Run & Gun brings for making dash + shotgun flanking maneuvers. Lastly I think it's very telling that Run & Gun is now a Lieutenant skill choice for Rangers where as it was the first skill given to Assaults in XCom:EU.

Winner, Run & Gun. (Unless you want a non-combat scout ranger babyman)

Honestly between the Spark's Overdrive and rocket, and Shen's hack, I think the 6 armor is there both as a tutorial of sorts and also to keep you from nuking the thing on turn 1.

Jade, I'm noticing that you're playing XCOM2 a lot looser than XCOM:EW (or maybe it's me watching people play Long War and them not risking any shots from the Ayyyliens). Do you just not give a gently caress anymore or is it that the game just is a lot more risky than XCOM 1?

I don't even want to see what happens if you gain CHIM outside of a pre-coded system.

I'm pretty sure the normal HP bar's display bugs out on 90 HP; it seemed like each (microscopic) pip accounted for four or five damage. I had no idea how much I had to deal out when I played this last, and that was with ballistics... ugh, never again.

Even allowing for it having garbage aim and weapons compared to the real deal I have to say it does have 'really hard to just kill in a single turn without it ever doing anything' over a regular sectopod.

Also full magnetics really would be the tipping point for making this whole mission a bunch easier since it lets you shred 2 armor with Grenadiers.

Heheheh...

This DLC (and the other one) introduces something we haven't seen in previous XCOM games - boss fights. Well, mostly haven't seen. Does the Uber Ethereal count as a boss? If one soldier can kill it in one turn, I don't think it counts. I'm not sure if XCOM really needs bosses but they are good for one thing: making the player lose control of the situation. We've gotten a bit too good at (ab)using game mechanics to avoid taking damage, and that might be what's so terrifying about this 90-HP, stun-resistant juggernaut. (Hmm. If frustrating a defensive player is what counts as a boss, maybe the Slingshot Douchedisk was XCOM's nastiest boss.)

We do get some tools to deal with it, though. Shen's Specialist abilities dish out a lot of armor-ignoring damage. Then you have the spark with its rocket and shredding, on top of being an extra soldier. The level is also there to help: those very large exploding objects also provide some damage and shred. Sometimes Julian stomps on them, saving XCOM the trouble of blowing them up. Also, Shen's threat assessment can dish out a lot of pain. No, really, it was painful to watch Jade not use that.
