The XCOM 1 LP needs to be retroactively renamed 'The Definitive X-Com Commander's Simulation' after first 15 or so missions now that we know that everything past the first few months was Jade Star being brainjacked.

I missed this in my post production scramble , so let me tack this one right now. Rangers: Conceal vs Run & Gun I would like to just say Run & Gun, end of story, move on. However some people have spoken up with how they enjoy using a scout ranger to be a Phantom and be a permanent scout on missions. And while I won't say that is a tactic I find necessary I will at least admit that Conceal is a skill choice that further enables that option. So this skill choice comes down to the question of do you want your ranger to be more powerful in combat, or do you want them to be a phantom scout and stay concealed as much as possible. That's all you need to ask to pick which one is the right skill for your ranger. While Phantom and Conceal have some pretty obvious synergy going for them, it may be less obvious that Run & Gun and Shadowstep are also a very powerful combination. This combo allows a ranger to be a powerful overwatch breaker, able to close a long distance and shoot a target to remove over watch and free up your squad to move and re-position with out risk. This goes on top of all the other utility that Run & Gun brings for making dash + shotgun flanking maneuvers. Lastly I think it's very telling that Run & Gun is now a Lieutenant skill choice for Rangers where as it was the first skill given to Assaults in XCom:EU. Winner, Run & Gun. (Unless you want a non-combat scout ranger babyman)

As a person who runs non-combat scout ranger babymen, I say that Conceal is still not very useful. Phantom is really the only skill you need for stealth, Conceal is just overkill that usually ends up just being wasted. By comparison, Run and Gun is more critical than ever with the time limits forcing you to try to cover more ground faster.

Man, I wish I knew there were cool robots when I submitted my soldier request. Also, I like the all the new stuff to highlight the uniqueness of each soldier. Customizable, nameable weapons that can be recovered, and the memorial has pictures and epitaphs. Super cool, and perfect for an audience participation LP like this. Although I guess generally you'd try not to be using the memorial wall too much.

Phantom is really the only skill you need for stealth yeah, conceal sounds like it could be cool, but it's cool in the way pubbies who camp corners with a sniper rifle in Call of Duty think they're cool. By which I mean not at all. It could sound tempting, right? Get Phantom, Conceal, and Shadowstrike to get AWESOME STEALTH CRITS ...but you give up super useful skills for something that might occasionally come in handy on a hard target you still need a grenadier to shred for you, at which point the grenade damage and cover destruction will probably tip the scales so you don't need either of Shadowstrike's bonuses, so the whole combo falls apart because you don't need Conceal to set up for it and ... yeah. meanwhile Blademaster swords are great finishing moves, and then once you unlock run and gun it makes flanking shotgun critical hits basically the ranger's base attack. Like just parse that for a minute: Shotgun crits as a reliable form of damage. in short: Jade wasted a bunch of words saying how to pick what is probably the easiest skill choice in the game. When Metal Gear Sectoanthropus learns to walk upright, does that make it easier to hit it? Or is it just to deny XCOM's troops a height advantage?

See, I like Phantom and Conceal because it lets me advance quicker without risk of multi-activation, letting me set up sick combos of mass murder for everyone else. I take an opportune shot with my ranger to kill someone, reestablish stealth, and then finish off the last pod with the ranger joining in. The LW Rogue mod class did make me build more aggressive rangers, though; my Rogue is just disgusting.

I'm a big fan of Phantom because having a scout is really useful but Conceal is pretty bad. The opportunity cost of missing Run and Gun is massive and while concealment is really useful for scouting, you don't really need to re-enter concealment after you break it. There is a mission type that a Conceal Ranger can solo but it's a pretty easy mission type in the first place so it's a decent time to level up your bench a bit and you'll miss out on all that experience by skipping all the enemies. If Conceal were up against something like Shadowstep it would be worth it but Run and Gun is just too good to go without.

For clarity, i didnt actually throw out sign ups that requested specific classes, i just ignored the hell out of the class request. There was one guy who specifically asked to be the Psi-guy and I can't remember if i discarded that sign up, or just ignored it and made him a unclassed rookie like everyone else. Man, someone in my stream mentioned making all the epitaphs Haikus, I think I might have to enact that as policy.

Didn't Long War from Within also have "bosses" with their giant enemies? They worked basically the same except it was like scaling a Cryssalid up by 50% and giving them 60 health or whatever. Granted i've only ever seen screenshots of those enemies so i'm not sure how the mechanics from that really transfer over to this game.

Conceal scouts are basically there for hard difficulty Iron Man runs. It lets you avoid losses. Also do SPARKS take time to heal or is it instant after missions?
|
# ? Aug 9, 2016 14:36 |

Sparks are repaired in the engineering bay, and can be sent out while damaged with no penalty, but you can only repair one at a time so fielding more than two sparks at a time isn't very feasible.
