What? Leveling walls is still possible? I always have my cannons and catapults shoot at the walls while I attack a settlement, and I've never seen a tower or wall segment crumble.

It still happens, yes? There's a percentage counter for damage and once wall segments hit 100% they collapse and create a breach. Towers can be knocked out of action permanently in the same way.

Yeah? I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. You should be able to mouse over a wall segment and see how close it is to being destroyed.

I don't find levelling the walls to ever be an useful use of my artillery in sieges. Taking out the towers can help though, especially playing vs VC where it means I can missile them with impunity.

Blowing up the walls also takes way too long and now that the towers can shoot all the way across the map waiting for your artillery to take out a wall will make you take a ton of damage.

If you have enough artillery you can take out the towers fairly quickly and then make breaches/shoot the poo poo out of the enemy.

It can be quite ridiculous if you take out the towers and have patience. My Karl with the fireball ring and a flying mount killed about 500 people, 2 handgunners each with 400, three crossbow men with 200 each and a poor 150 on two mortars in an attack that I had no chance of winning if they would have gone out on the field. Ended in a draw as I didn't have enough time to clean up after running out of ammo, but that just resets it for next turn.

charging a wall with a horde of gors and ungors while raiders shower defenders with arrows and a cygor chucks rocks and there's shitloads of dudes dying all over the place is rad as hell

of course it only works because you also have a bunch of minotaurs along with a gorebull and your general (and maybe a filler infantry unit or two) busting down the gate and handily taking care of literally anything they find on the other side, making all the poo poo going on at the walls a sideshow

Yeah leveling towers and walls is a breeze with cannons. Take two and you'll knock a wall down with 3-4 salvos. It's useful if you want to get in and around the clusterfuck at the gate.

From what I've seen the towers go for whatever's closest/only go for the artillery if there's not a closer target so as long as you use some cannon fodder and keep them in tower range it should be fine.

What are good ways to handle Brets as the beastmen? The first time through I was playing Khazrak and got a lot of ambush battles/sieges so the cavalry was less of an issue. There was one normal field battle that was a huge clusterfuck, my normal strategy of mobbing them from the back with ungors while charging their front with more ungors didn't work so well when half their units are cavalry and can just turn around and kill my archers before my melee line can catch them.

Malagor has some cool skills in his top line and wilds is always fun, but I am not liking it anywhere near as much as khazrak so far.

Yeah I like Malagor much more as a lord but Kahzrak undeniably has the better start. One unit of minotaurs is a lot more useful than a giant IMO. Plus unlocking Kahzrak is a pain and I'm pretty sure you need him to beat The Fall of Man.

e. VH/N Greenskin campaign down - the short victory, anyway. I'm not sure if I preferred it to normal or not. I used waaaay too many autoresolves because I wasn't confident I'd win and I wanted to auto myself into a good position so I didn't waste too much time if the campaign became unwinnable, but as usual it just feels like cheating.

My VH Greenskins campaign failures and now 7th try seems to be working, I just took my army at the start, got to 17 guys and then went on destroying/occupying all the places south that I could take then to the SW badland savage orc top knot area, locked that down. During that time. Karak Anzul and Dwarves destroyed all the rest of the greenskins then confederated so i have this one province.. but I managed to build level 4 capital and black orcs and went on this absolute crazy defense against 4 stacks of dwarves and then border princes with my army and waagh just mopping up the fights. Currently pushing north towards barak varr area. Turn ~60 i think.

With Greenskins, apparently I am supposed to wipe out Dwarfs and Empire, but I haven't seen Empire yet at turn 150 and it seems like they're on the other side of the map. Problem is I can't take any cities in-between because that's apparently am important game mechanic I missed. Am I just supposed to death march an army up there and take a city to use as a beachhead? I'm assuming yes but was wondering if I was missing something obvious.

Empire got wiped in my game before I even met them. Wonder if the mod I have that disables AI public order cheats lets Chaos trample the map with corruption? They've been defeated early in my last two games. Beastmen might contribute to their early fall as well.

You could also take a few of the Dwarf holds between the Empire and Bretonnia as well as the ones all around Blackfire Pass. You can take anything built on a mountain and the humies/stinky humies are surrounded by them.

And yeah, even without mods the Beastmen sometimes can really put the hurt on AI Empire at times. Sigvald's latest glorious crusade turned up at Altdorf only to find it totally isolated and surrounded by herdstones and angry minor nations. Turns out most of the surviving human factions rolled 'Imperial Mistrust' as a diplomatic trait and paid emergent herds into fighting their rivals :haw:

Empire's in the middle of the map, you can get there by taking the dwarf holds in the mountains and going west along the mountains, taking all the holds along the way till you get to reikland.

My last two campaigns the empire hasn't expanded beyond 2 or 3 settlements before I put them out of their misery. VCs on turn 30 and the secessionists still held Grunberg with a stack and a half. I came tromping through with malagor next campaign on turn 20 to find Heimgart rubble and no empire presence outside the Reikland. Step your game up, Franz. Even on H/H with Kahzrak they didn't get much beyond 4 settlements come turn 30 or 40.

There are additional Beastmen hordes outside the main faction, right? Can you actually confederate those in the grand campaign?

When you see it, you'll shit yourself.

Playing a co-op campaign as Dwarves (with my friend playing the undead) and one of my non-legendary lords is becoming incredibly bad-rear end. Like when he defended Iron rock at level 7 against a level 12 Grimgor full army and whaag. Although the battle was pretty epic, having someone control the hand-to-hand dwarves and someone controlling artillery/archers is pretty OP, since once you have something like 10 quarrellers you can micro-manage them to wreck anything before it reaches your line pretty effectively. Also having a potion of healing on a dwarf lord is pretty cool.

if you want to demolish walls with some ease just start with your atillery hugging a corner and as soon as you press the start button move them a bit forward. There's a small angle where the last tower can't hit you just like, 20 meters ahead of the starting line, so just move your arty there and they're safe from counter-fire from the towers.

Yeah, dwarf heroes and lords are very tough and quarrelers are an incredible unit throughout most of the game, especially when boosted by an engineer. Just be careful massing them against Chaos doomstacks who are often heavily armored and have the cavalry to continually charge the quarrelers. I ended up going with ironbreakers/longbeards and using hammerers as my primary offense against chaos doomstacks (ones full of chose and/or knights). In particular I think there was one of Ungrim's story missions that throws an enormous amount of chaos knights at you which the quarrelers really struggle against.

If you have artillery one easy thing you can do is just squeeze your troops in a corner and blow up the single tower (or 2 towers) able to shoot at your army. The AI is pretty bad at siege battles and typically will just march units back and forth on the walls allowing your missile troops to slaughter them until they run out of ammo.

Did Chaos get a buff with the latest patch? I remember they used to have problems with recruitment once their elite doomstacks were dwindled so you'd usually see Archaeon & co. wandering around with half stacks if you weren't the first one to meet them. In my last two games though I've never seen any Chaos stack without 20 elite units at full health, and unsurprisingly they've been absolutely unstoppable by the AI factions. When playing Greenskins I used to just let Chaos run wild and let them soften up the Empire for me before I took them both out, but now Chaos takes out the Empire in short order without losing momentum and I have to rush to the north to get my raiding objective finished before Chaos eliminates all the AI factions.

Getting tired of low fightiness Orcs running away from battles. With low fightiness you'd think the AI would want them to get their fightiness back or at least go out in a blaze of glory. But then I guess that is this game's biggest problem right now: the campaign AI is way too passive when one of your own armies is in range.
