My Little Tony: Leadership is Magic
I'm pretty sure I saw news articles with the ABS explicitly stating that the site would be able to handle the load. I'm hoping it's down because people saw that and decided to DDoS the site because that's pretty loving funny, as opposed to the more likely scenario of someone at the ABS asking if the site could handle that much traffic and getting 'nah she'll be right' in response. 'Let's talk about implementing e-voting' is probably going to be quietly never mentioned again until everyone else has it and we all look like idiots.

Is there any idea of how long the online census will be available for? I've never had to do these stupid things myself, now I'm wondering why I didn't just get a physical form. I could have come home and been done with it, instead of checking the ABS page and wondering if it's even worth bothering tonight. Pen and paper wins again.

Load testing is all well and good but won't save you from a DDoS.

But still, at anyone who didn't get the form and immediately think "I'll do this before or after the day where everyone loving else will be trying"

Should have contracted out load testing to Lowtax, the forums could have used the money. He could have set them up with a sweet CloudFlare deal.

The ABS page loads now but it only loads enough to tell me to gently caress off and come back later, which is somehow even more annoying.

Come to think of it, why the gently caress did they think 1 million forms an hour would be the upper limit? Call it 15 or 16 million households, and about a 6 hour window most people would try to fill it in during?

I'm guessing their load testing was sending 469,367 pings to the server over a 12 hour period. They billed the ABS $1 per ping.

They have positions open NOW for Automation Test Specialist too!

DDOS, feh. Back when I worked on the 2006 census people protested in good, wholesome ways, like filling in fake info, leaving the form blank, putting 'Jedi' as their religion, smearing their form with copious amounts of their own faeces, or the timeless classic of chasing the census worker off their property with an axe and then fighting the cops when they arrive to arrest them.

E-census is poo poo, go back to paper only and paying people 40k to stand around feeding forms into a dozen OCR scanners for hours, that'd do Centrelink a favour.

As for security, I don't know what you're all worried about, the ABS has never been hacked, and my then-coworker who showed his mates John Howard's census got fired, so you know only trustworthy people have access to your info.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has revealed its website was attacked by overseas hackers, which caused it to crash during last night's census.

The census website crashed, frustrating thousands of Australians, who were trying to submit their information.

David Kalisch from the ABS said the census website was attacked by hackers four times yesterday.

Probably was the Chinese and not Anon, since we embarrassed their swimmers who may or may not have taken performance enhancers.
