Having only seen a very small portion of the show and being only three he had no trouble suspending his disbelief that this really was the end of Pikachu. It's adorable too, whenever there's a gym battle, Ash wins a couple of the first matches but then the gym leader comes back and starts soloing his team with a mon, he gets super worried and says "Ok, that's as much as I wanted to watch."

Freeze and sleep. There's no reliable way to inflict freeze, so you should just focus on using sleep.

Gen 1 is bugged, though, I don't remember exactly how, but I think paralysis has no effect on the capture chance. This was not fixed in the VC versions.

Instead of adding +5 to the catch rate, the game just skips it, making Paralyze, Burn and Poison useless to catch Pokemon. Freeze and Sleep still add +10, so they're the only way to boost your chances, status wise.
