Anyone got any idea what the film's budget is? I can't image it's too much bigger than Final Wars', which was a little under $20 million.

It's deliberately a little freaky in the way Japanese horror can be. Some of the shots in the trailer put me in mind of Attack on Titan.

Along with this and the spoilers revealing that Godzilla in this movie is being conceived of as some kind of amphibious, evolving muck-thing, more like a cross-pollination between GMK-zilla and Hedorah points to the real success of the production design. This is simultaneously the most audacious Godzilla design, as well as the most 'traditional': This movie is gonna be so loving sick.

Everything about that movie feels so drat low grade that it only really stands out from every other mainstream Japanese production by virtue of the premise of giants come and eat people. It lacks any tension in the writing, editing, or performances, the compositing of effects is done in such a way that the moment more than one is being done at a time it feels like a quickie diorama from a middle school student, character motivations are shallow but repeated again and again, the whole exercise by the end of Part 1 makes you feel almost queasy with how obviously this was made to just be another salvo in the endless marketing campaign of the manga. Not even necessarily a love of the material is seen. It's a paycheck movie that seemed pre-aware of it's destiny as fodder for TV Tokyo to run on random holidays in the late hours.

That's a very cool and scary thing right there. This is kinda looking like the film Godzilla 2014 seemed it would be from the teasers, just a modern take on "Godzilla loving kills everyone." I like that it was a swerve then, but a straight take on the 1954 concept is also good.

ThePlague-Daemon posted:Maybe I'm kinda late in noticing this, but I found a bunch of old concept art images online of the 1998 Godzilla. What's the deal with humanoid Godzilla? It looks like maybe originally the idea was taking advantage of CGI Godzilla more agile and flexible instead of being a stiff-moving suit, rather than being more like a t-rex. The design is really similar to the finished movie, but the way it carries itself is totally different. Did anyone behind the scenes on the movie ever talk about the change? I was gonna say Xenomorph plus Dagon. Not the Mesopotamian deity but the Lovecraft monster dorks like drawing as a fishman. The REAL Goobusters posted:Oh my loving god I am so sold I don't get it. http://variety.com/2016/film/asia/japan-box-office-shin-godzilla-second-weekend-win-1201832574/ Looks like it's doing great at the Japanese box office, I'd bet my bottom dollar they've already got plans for a sequel drawn up. Also, Bloody Disgusting has their review up, and from what I've seen it's one of the only Western publications to have published a review. Their reviewer seems to have liked it more than the weeb over at Kotaku. http://bloody-disgusting.com/movie/3402102/review-godzilla-resurgence-shin-godzilla/

I hope that the recent return of Hedorah to Godzilla merchandise means that either Shin Godzilla 2 or Good American Godzilla 2 feature Hedorah. FWIW Yoshimitsu Banno was an executive producer on Godzilla 2014. Anyway, that radioactive breath looks awesome. Much more in line with the sort of wanton, indiscriminate destruction of badguy Godzillas of the past.

From what I understand, that was, after decades of trying, the only way Banno could get reattached to Godzilla. Previously, Tomoyuki Tanaka, as executive producer on the series, would heavily oversee the films as they were being made. During the early shooting of Hedorah, he had to be hospitalized for several weeks. Banno was all "Don't worry about it, I got this." When Tanaka saw the rocket jet flight scene, his first words were "they've ruined my Godzilla." and Banno was all but blacklisted in the Japanese film industry.
