It's unlikely the Death Star is going to blow up any planets in Rogue One. A New Hope made it pretty clear that Alderaan was the Death Stars first target. That would be some serious retconning to make that not the case anymore.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they maybe fire off a shot at a fraction of the power just to make sure it works, while wiping out a backwater capitol. Although I really hope the Death Star doesn't do anything at all.

But I agree with you, I sincerely doubt they'll minimize the weight of Alderaan by retconning it to be a second full target.

Like others have said, since the story seems to be about the crystals the Empire needs to power the laser, its possible they end up firing it at like 1/5 of its total power or something like that, so it completely obliterates a city but doesn't take out the whole planet. That wouldn't really qualify as a useful test, Alderaan would still be the first.

Well that's because they're all gonna die (prolly) anyway so who gives a poo poo, this is WAR NOT ADVENTURE ANYMORE SONNY JIM

also I instantly am attached more to Donny Yen than any other character simply because Blind Buddhist Warrior Monk is my favorite trope, especially when played by Donny fuckin Yen

I mean poo poo, I can certainly conclude now that Rogue One is just somebody's larger group's Edge of The Empire campaign, with supplements.

They seem like good stock characters for a space war movie. Overall I can see a bit more visual creativity than what TFA had to offer which is encouraging.

Definitely a good thing. I'm not really sure, but it kind of exciting going into this movie knowing that most of these characters are probably doomed.

His part has to be either so tiny that its like, one or two flashbacks, or so pivotal that they don't want to spoil it.

I'm still convinced he was the cloaked figure in the first trailer. Why he is wearing a cloak? I have no clue.

I have a feeling that this movie is gonna end with an exciting last minute escape like what I wish Episode 3 would have ended with where the girl does to the Death Star plans what I wanted Obi Wan to do with the twins

The shot where Tie Fighter rises up in front of her really reminded me of Rebels (possibly the first episode). Rebels does cool stuff getting more up close and personal iconic vehicles, this looks like it does too.

Absolutely that was what I was thinking. When the heroes in Rebels are staring down those Imperial tanks and planes, you can tell they know they're hosed.

Re: Death Star firing. I mean it's hardly a spoiler, because I'm just putting together the information from the trailer, but if you really don't want to be spoiled, don't read it (I haven't seen a script and I don't read blogs about this, so this is just my thinking along with some thoughts about how the movie could go, but still... a major weapons test is about to happen, i'm sure the Empire is going to blow up that desert looking planet, the eclipse is really really really really obvious (and fantastic) framing to show what's about to happen. It's not like the Empire can really keep the Death Star a complete secret, but they do control the news. Anyway, yeah, that planet gets blown up, is my guess. The 'demonstration' in ANH is the Empire going 'yeah we have this thing, and gently caress you guys, here's what we'll do with it if there's any more rebellion' - compare to us blowing up nukes in the ocean, and then going 'ok fine, here's one on your city Japan' - one's a test, and one's a 'we have this, and we aren't bashful about using it.' Remember at the beginning of ANH the Emporer dissolves the Senate, because with the Death Star, nobody's going to revolt. Your planet wants to fight the Empire? Welp. And really, the Death Star is all over this movie. Of COURSE it's gonna fire. I just expect there to be very few people on that planet when it blows up. Maybe the daring escape is the crew with the plans getting off world right before it goes. Anyway I can't wait to see this poo poo.

Also I just watched the trailer again

Maybe it's a situation where the Empire has mined all the crystals they need, and then some, from the desert planet while under heavy rebel resistance from the city. If the mines are no longer needed, and the Empire knows there's a bunch of rebels hanging out, why not test fire a gently caress you shot at the city/planet. A bunch of people die while the small crew of good guys escapes by sneaking onto the Death Star to steal the plans.

Then Darth Vader realizes something is up and you get Friday the 13th Vader stalking people through cramped hallways.

Clone Wars near the end was way better than anything in Rebels so far. But Rebels is still pretty drat good once you get past the introductory episodes. And this new season looks to be kicking it up a notch again.

Saw Gerrera and his apparently more violent rebel cell are based at Jedha (and it looks like the first mission of Jyn and Cassian is to meet up with them there), so it would also make sense if the Empire tested the Death Star on that city to make an example of them.

Just remember everybody we tested a nuke before we used one on Japan. Gotta make sure your doomsday weapon works before you reveal it to the world.

So the Empire is gonna test the Bomb but in secret conditions to make sure everything works as intended and to iron out any glitches.

THEN they blow up Alderaan in a very public way.

That mummy gently caress?

In the old EU (trigger warning!) the Death Star blew up the planet it was constructed in orbit of, so it wouldn't be surprising for them to use a similar plot point here. Also, Chekhov's Death Star and all; that thing's definitely going off at some point in the movie, whether it fully works or not.
