I figure that the split between conservatives and progressives in any given population is probably about even give or take regional leanings, I have known a number of black people personally who have totally conservative values on social issues and fiscal policy, but they will vote Democrat in every election because the Democrats aren't currently actively oppressing them (and at least make an effort to represent them) Beyond that, GWB was extremely popular (for a republican) among Latino voters. Living in Oklahoma, many (if not most) of the latino people I've talked politics with are on the conservative side. The stupidest thing about the way the Republicans have built their strategy over the last decade is that they've assumed that minorities are automatic Democrats and not worth bothering with. Like, their "brightest minds" put out paper after paper about it but the people actually running the show haven't even tried to reach out to minority voters and tune down their rhetoric. The result is that a lot of people who have completely lovely, awful opinions and ideas (and some, I assume, good ideas) will vote for the Democratic party by default because it's the only choice they have.

We are about 3 months out from the election now at a comparable spot in the primary what was Trump polling looking like. That would be 3 months before the first ballot cast for him. I am not saying that the polling we are seeing right now is wrong just that the same polling companies using the same methodologies said there was no way Trump could win the primary at a similar point in that election.
