I can't think of a quicker way to lose regulars than to strip out the things that separate them from their biggest competitors in the area.

Yeah I was going to say, losing parades would cause meltdowns. If you want to look at the financial side, then the cost per viewer probably isn't too large. Paint the Night has pulled huge crowds.

I like the parades because they pull people off the rides so I don't have to stand in line.

I hope something cool replaces it. The regular daily parade is still better, but the electrical parade was a neat spectacle. Now the water pageant, on the other hand, can go and only five people would ever miss it.

Parades are super popular with guests (to the point they redesigned the hub for crowd control issues) but Disney has been scaling back over the years. It used to be that all 4 parks had a daytime parade. Now it's just down to the MK.

MK is the only park where a parade truly works. in the other parks it was quite a stretch to have them (Studios being the best of the bunch since they had a clear path) Epcot was so weird (even if the parade was cool), and Animal KIngdoms parade is super inconvenient since it circles back around, making it twice as long as it should be in terms of guest impact. Festival of Fantasy is the big draw and MSEP was a good crowd draw for the first parade of the night, but its old and kind of showing it at this point. I am baffled that Disneyland wants it back (although that explains why they have been doing repairs on the floats recently) I'd love it if Paint the Night came here, but Disneyland isn't willing to let go of it completely, and we don't have the budget to build a new one from scratch. I head a rumor of trying to do something along the lines of Spectro in the style of Paint the Night, but again...money

MSEP made me really sad when I saw it earlier this year. Lots of the floats had lights out and stuff. It just wasn't the parade I remembered from my childhood.

Festival of Fantasy is thousands of times better than MSEP. The minor seasonal parades (like Easter, which is basically "find all the rabbit and duck and chicken characters and put 'em on a pastel float -- DONE!") are about as good. MSEP is the speedbump you have to sit through before Wishes. It's not even vaguely impressive in the era of pervasive computer-controlled EL/LED stuff. Goodbye and good riddance. I mean FoF is drat-near perfect. I made some good animated gifs of the last time we were in WDW, and looking at them just now made me smile.

I don't like parades (which explains my stance on this) but I was even impressed by FoF MSEP was cool to me because it's what I remember seeing in promo videos and such when I was a kid but yeah it was pretty underwhelming. I'll be gone it's glad so that I don't have to guide my girlfriend thorugh the park with her eyes closed anymore at night since LEDs = epilepsy nightmare

I'm also sure that evening parades pull in tons of cash through whatever light-up/ whirling contraption that the kids want to entertain themselves with while having to wait 45 minutes for the actual event.

I bought one of the Made with Magic light up paintbrushes for Paint the Night, won't lie. you can use it to change the color of other people's light up stuff, which is really nifty. is it 30 bucks worth of nifty? Probably not, but it has a fancy Disneyland 60th logo that makes it kind of a collectable.

What all does Paint the Night have in it? Kind of sad MSEP is done but I hope there is a cool replacement. And my mind was blown when Maleficent showed up as the dragon on FOF. Holy poo poo that thing was incredible.

It's really hard to describe what all Paint the Night has. It's a modern version of MSEP with floats designed using movie tie in's and stuff. Here is my video of Paint the Night. This was of the first public showing of the parade when it debuted to the public last year. Because it was new, there's a lot of crowd noise and whooping and stuff, so I hope you don't mind that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0kpQdCltxA The video is over 16 minutes long, and I would highly recommend watching all of it, but for a quick look at some of the most awesome (imho) stuff, skip to about 3 minutes, and watch for a minute or so. It's pretty loving impressive. (for those who watch the whole thing, the idiot that yells out Rapunzel and has a kiss blown in return... yeah, that's me)

it's a lot different than MSEP though. It has a better overall flow, I feel. It does incorporate Baroque Hoedown because if you are doing a nighttime Disney parade I guess you kind of have to make a mention to that song.

Spent the weekend staying at the Polynesian (Mom had booked it back in January for a wedding, so why not?). Getting to a park at opening is definitely one of the keys to a successful day. We arrived at the Magic Kingdom just after 8:00 on Saturday and managed to see Tinkerbell, Aurora, Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Tiana, ride the Haunted Mansion, Small World, the TTA, and Carousel of Progress, and get coffee and breakfast all before 11:30. We had FastPasses for Space Mountain and Seven Dwarves as well, so at a fairly leisurely pace (stopping in stores and buying merchandise like some Haunted Mansion stuff) we got pretty much everything we wanted to finished by lunch.

Are any of those character dining experiences worth it?

If you have kids or love meeting the characters it's a lot of fun. The food is pretty great at all of the ones we've done as well. Once a trip is a worthwhile experience I think.

Yeah, I think we'll do it at least once. Since the point is to have a bunch of characters around while you eat, I guess what I'm wondering which place has the best rotation/number of them. I found some posts on it on other forums but they were old (like 2012). Since its less about meeting the characters for me personally I may end up choosing which one serves food I'd like to eat which would be Ariels Grotto but I might be the only seafood eater in my party.

Some of the funniest "You had to be there" type memories I have are the result of reserving an early dinner at Garden Grill without letting anyone know Chip and Dale were involved.

When my daughter was younger and in princess mode we loved the Breakfast at Askerhaus(sp?) at Epcot.

I think Akershus dinner and Tusker House breakfast are the only 2 character breakfasts that have appeased me food quality wise, though with Tusker House, you can just eat at Boma for breakfast instead and have more options at the cost of characters. Character dining is almost never worth it if you're looking for bang for your buck in food.

Blackchamber posted:Are any of those character dining experiences worth it? As an adult traveling with other adults, no. It amounts to 20-something college kids dressed up in costume coming to your table to bother you while your overpriced-even-for-Disney subpar (like, Olive Garden quality) food gets cold.

I've heard nothing but rave reviews about Garden Grill. The food is excellent from what I hear. I've done Akershus and Ohana breakfast before and thought the food was good. So basically, if you're not into characters, there's good, cheaper food to be had. If a character experience is something you want, well, some character meals are better than others. Personally, I avoid Chef Mickey's like the plague. It's loud and the food is not that good.

Boma for breakfast is never a bad idea. Also I love that the POG juice that used to be exclusive to the Polynesian has started appearing everywhere on property. Drinking that stuff is one of my earliest Disney memories, back when I stayed at the Polynesian with my mom when I was around kindergarten age. I love the stuff, but it's always nostalgic for me.

If I remember correctly, it was the second time I had ever stayed at Disney (the first was the Grand Floridian when I was like, 4, and I don't remember anything about it). We were going for the Very Merry some time around the mid to late 90s. That was back when the concierge building was still called Tonga, before the first renovation renamed it Hawaii. We were waiting in the lobby of the building for our room to be ready, and one of the cast members gave me a cup of the juice. I think it was an instantaneous addiction.

Even if it is completely safe, a kid's smaller face means that they'll get a lovely image out of any off the shelf HMD. Or...wait...they're planning on closing Disneyquest.
