There was such an easy opportunity to call one of Japanese gymnasts Pikachu because he spent $5000 on Pokemon Go in Rio due to data overages. Yet here we are.

the panacea posted:5/5 olympic spirits https://amp.heraldsun.com.au/sport/...8bb46a9b3499fa8 This was when the crowd became involved, booing loudly as the Frenchman was on the runway. Afterwards Lavillenie likened the reception to what Jesse Owens had to deal with back in 1936 at the Berlin Olympic Games where the black American was subject to vicious racial taunting. “In 1936 the crowd was against Jesse Owens. We’ve not see this since. We have to deal with it,” Lavillenie said. “For the Olympics it is not a good image. I did nothing to the Brazilians. “I feel a little unlucky. The bar fell from nothing at 6.03. I’ll be back to win the gold back.” Da Silva’s extraordinary rise to national hero wasn’t expected given he came into the competition with moderate form. The former world junior champion failed to get out of qualifying at last year’s world championships in Beijing with his previous personal best 5.93m. Bike track update, a little scorched, https://twitter.com/SimonBurney/status/765522148781948928/photo/1 Oh and more volunteers are quitting, Olympic volunteers quitting because of long hours, lack of food Organizing committee 'uses us for free labour,' while IOC makes billions, This is how it starts. At 2:20 a.m., 23-year-old Aisha Marcelina tiptoes quietly to the bathroom so she doesn't wake her family. She lays out her uniform, gets dressed, has a quick breakfast, then she gets on a bus and travels almost two hours to start work at 6 a.m. For free. "Before I started volunteering here, I used to sleep in until really late," she says. "But now I'm getting more into the habit." Marcelina had planned on buying tickets to the Olympics. Now as a volunteer, she's here four days a week, though she doesn't get to watch a single event. Her job is to chauffeur officials and athletes around the city. Shortly after 6 a.m. she punches in and grabs the keys to the black car covered in Rio 2016 decals. Marcelina says she's enjoying the cultural exchange, even learning some new words. .... "The IOC has made more than $5.6 billion US in the last four years. But paying workers, they say, is against the spirit of the Games — even though, critics point out, IOC executives in Rio pocket $900-a-day per diems." http://www.cbc.ca/beta/news/world/olympic-volunteers-1.3721404

That's Mark Cavendish, he is basically a bike sprinting sperg. He's claimed responsibility for it and then been contradicted by one of the guys who was caught in the crash. Just a regular track cycling thing.

But on a serious note, the Paralympics are in trouble before they've even begun: http://www.wsj.com/articles/appeals-judge-rejects-olympic-organizers-request-for-funding-without-financial-disclosure-1471318524 RIO DE JANEIRO—A Brazilian appeals judge struck down an attempt Monday by the local Olympic organizing committee to gain access to government money without disclosing its financial information first. Rio 2016, which is responsible for organizing the Olympics and Paralympic Games, is reported to be facing a revenue shortfall of 250 million Brazilian reais ($78 million) that could force it to pare down the latter event.

New shooting, Google Translate A Swiss television crew targeted by gunfire in a favela in Rio Sports journalist of RTS and his cameraman were threatened by a gunman in a favela in Rio last weekend. The man fired several shots in their direction, but they were not injured. The journalist Marc-André Berset, his cameraman and their driver wanted to avoid traffic jams on the way to the Olympic Stadium at the Rio Games. They followed their GPS and ended up by mistake in a favela in the megacity. At a street corner, while trying to find their way, the men found themselves facing an armed man who threatened them. The driver was able to accelerate and run away, but the individual opened fire three times against their vehicle. Neither the journalist nor the cameraman nor the driver were injured. "I want to say that they have not committed any mistake, they found themselves in a big traffic jam that would have prevented them from reaching the stadium on time and that is why they have switched their GPS followed his directions, "said the chief of sports RTS Massimo Lorenzi. http://www.rts.ch/info/monde/7944929-une-equipe-de-la-rts-visee-par-des-tirs-dans-une-favela-de-rio.html

Normally a volunteer would be directing traffic or crowds or picking up trash, not waking up at 2:00 AM to work as a chauffeur all day. It's pretty obvious that the IOC is just using the "volunteer" category to cover all the jobs anyone else would have to pay workers for and further exploit the local population for profit.

Yeah, that's lovely and I think nobody should show up for this crap. But there are some who do show up anyway and seems to like it somehow so whatever, let them get hosed I guess. the ioc has billions upon billions of dollars that they've gotten through bribes and corruption and they can't use any of it to pay people working at the games. i don't even think FIFA has that problem also i'm watching women's soccer and nbc interrupts those during play for commercials. they have the broadcast rights to the the premier league and don't do that during their games. there's no excuse for that. also nobody is at the game but it's in belo horizonte, not rio
