Christ, and I thought the Action Park-style ones with the fiberglass troughs were bad. Those look like they're on the verge of dumping you down a valley. Also, how hard did he hit that woman? It looks like she spent most of the rest of the ride unconscious.

What a fucknugget. I love him getting angry and violent at the person in front of him when she's obviously having to slow down in order to not hit the people in front of her. It's just like normal everyday traffic! ...looking at it that way kind of saps all the potential fun out of that ride.

I found a reddit thread where a bunch of people defended the guy though, even after he called her a bitch, said he was going to ram her, rammed her, smiled about it into the camera at the end, and then uploaded the video gloating about it calling her a bitch again. It looked like she was 12-14 and she never even looked back as she got off the ride and walked away crying. Decrepus fucked around with this message at 05:23 on Aug 17, 2016 |

Sagebrush posted:I know it's a losing proposition to ever discuss the feasibility of one of this guy's insane concepts, but this one always struck me as particularly dumb because...like...why does it need to have the ejecting capsule in the first place? Why not just make the parachutes 20% bigger and save the whole plane? I think it's always useful (and fun) to dissect exactly why stupid things are stupid. This one isn't actually stupid for that reason - the cabin contains all the things you want to save, and gets them as far away as possible from all those tanks full of flammable liquid and engines full of metal spinning at 50,000 rpm. The reason it's dumb is that airliners (almost all aeroplanes in fact) are a monocoque - the structural integrity comes from the outer skin. Making the cabin detachable like that completely destroys the structural integrity so it would need massive reinforcement to not just fold up like a piece of paper on the first flight. Both the cabin and the rest of the plane would need that massive reinforcement, plus you wouldn't be able to have a hard connection between the two, so you're easily doubling the unladen weight of the plane right there. Then there's the weight and risk of the system itself. There's the parachutes themselves of course - that's going to be a good extra 10% on the weight of the cabin. Then you're going to have to pack the plane with explosives - rocket motors for the ejection, explosive bolts for the attachment of the cabin to the plane, and explosive disconnectors for cabin wiring. Even if you accept a plane that's full of explosives you're probably doubling the amount of maintenance time that a plane needs. Then there's the actual practicalities of the system. The majority of crashes are at takeoff or landing. Unless you're going to make the system zero-zero capable, like an ejector seat, it'll be no use there. If it is zero-zero capable you're talking even more weight in rocket motors and parachutes and reinforcement of the cabin structure, plus killing quite a few of your passengers - even fighter pilots can be crippled by an ejection. It'll also of course be no use at all in cases of controlled flight into terrain or explosive decompression, other fairly common crashes. So you're left with a system that will make planes 10x more expensive to run, won't save passengers from the majority of crashes, and requires every plane on earth to be packed with explosives.

Slanderer posted:jesus christ Yeah. That father used his kids as bait. He put the scared eight year old in front to ride the brake like a coward. Then he followed his son telling him it's okay to go slow and to keep riding the break. The daughter was the team's Face. Who would kick a twelve year old girl? It was the perfect plan to ruin this one fucker's ride, and it worked. I'm horrified this loving ride exists. I'm horrified it doesn't have a dead man's switch, as apparent when the girl loses consciousness, slumps over, and zips away to probably ram the dad in the back. I'm horrified the only safety feature runs on the honor system of not being a loving sociopath and kicking a child full on in the spine. And the longer video was infuriating as the dad rubs his daughter's head as if to say "you bumped me, you goof, haha" and nobody so much as gave the camera holder stink eye. He is what we build jails for.

Why do those things even have manual brakes? Why aren't they designed like roller coasters where the ride runs itself and the operators enforce spacing?

Are these sorts of things pay-per-ride? If so I would definitely have felt like that family had wasted my money, but a few <insert currency here> isn't the sort of thing you assault someone over, especially a kid who's only vaguely related to the problem. I sympathize with the guy's anger, though obviously not his chosen way to express it. It seems like terrible ride design to have a ride where the fun comes from speed but the person on front of you has control over your maximum speed. If one person doesn't want to go fast the next few riders all get their fun ruined by having the thrill ride become a traffic jam.
