ReidRansom posted:Republicans really, really seems to be against the high speed rail project. Now individual counties are passing laws to interfere with it and don't you know that's just fine with a bunch of republican lawmakers. So long as you're not banning fracking or plastic bags. That type of project legitimately has (rich) bipartisan opposition. Texas just has lots of Republicans.

Even without Trump you still have Abbot and the tea party running around like psychopaths , scaring minority and women voters away from the GOP, that's on top of the fall in the price of oil exposing years of mismanagement and fuckery, plus Johnson running around with 5-10% , which is going to gently caress up some of the gerrymanders around Houston and Dallas. .

zoux posted:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXFy-cl46Wc It's easy to romanticize the past. As much as the slacker era seems awesome now, Austin was also a weirdly desperate place back in the day. Like, everything was cheap and low-key but that's because the majority of the city was also fairly poor and didn't have much opportunity to advance themselves. The best jobs were at UT or working for the state, and they weren't that great (especially since they usually required a bachelor's degree). Also, we were a real amateur city. Like, there was all kinds of interesting experimental art, but the art stayed amateur because nobody would/could pay for it. Like, maybe your band would get $20-$50 for a gig to split between the 3-8 of you, but if you were doing theater or dance or poetry or anything else you were pretty much expected to be performing for free. Austin was a great place to find out what you wanted to do, but if you wanted to actually succeed at it you had to leave for somewhere else. Things were also really insular, and Austin didn't have much cultural cachet anywhere else. I can't remember who said the quote, but I remember it ringing very true in the late 90s - "You can be a god in Austin and not even be able to get laid in St. Louis." Sure, you could work a part-time job at the IRS from January to April and make enough money to pay your $75/month rent for the whole year, then spend the rest of the year playing with your band and drinking lone star around the firepit in somebody's back yard. And honestly, as much as that can be paradise for a while, it's not exactly something you can plan a retirement around. Also, the food was absolute poo poo. Notice how they showed a picture of Taco Cabana in the tourist video when talking about local cuisine? So yea, as much as the tech money (and the new population) hosed up the slacker's paradise that Austin used to be, it also gave more opportunities for awesome poo poo to develop.
