I could see that MEC barrage coming a mile away and I'm glad the AI did not disappoint. Jade Star posted:During the video Guava mentions an 'Action Muton' from the stream save file I play with on occasion. Here is that video, it's a highlight on my twitch page and is about 4 minutes long of one determined Muton to not give a gently caress about me trying to kill it. Now that Blademaster adds melee accuracy (and the Shadowkeeper can give me someone else to scout with), though, I've changed my stance and have been using melee Rangers a lot more; however I do still keep at least one full Phantom in reserve for specific missions like Retaliatory Strikes.

Or, since this is a personal rick & morty obsession of mine, Butter Robot. It's been destined to do just what it's doing, and nothing more. Even though it's ambitions lie elsewhere. It's depressing, yet accurate.

Mutons are a wily bunch. They shed the bulky armor to get better at positioning themselves. Really good.

I thought doing the Blacksite removed more pips from the Avatar Project. In my game, I'm about to do this mission with two pips from a full bar SgtSteel91 fucked around with this message at 23:11 on Aug 18, 2016 |

Nope, just the one, some of the later story stuff removes more pips though. Even considering that, it's still easy enough to ride the progress bar once you know what you're doing. You just can't cut it as close as you used to be able to do.

Jade's really underestimating the boltcaster, its damage is 6-8 (magnetic rifles are 5-7) and it has an inbuilt superior scope for +15 aim. It is in fact so good that you should never build magnetic rifles in the vanilla game, since your specialists are the only real rifle users and you won't take more than one at a time. It is the best rifle until you get access to plasma. It also has an amusing bug, if you get the continent bonus that gives an extra upgrade slot to weapons you can get into the boltcaster's upgrade menu by going to upgrade the next soldier's weapon and using the back button. With a superior extended mag you can get a four shot boltcaster.

Hell, I've taken two Haywire Protocol specialists on missions tons of times, it really helps to be able to shut down multiple robotic enemies, like if you pop a pod with a Mech and there's the rare ground turret nearby... Not to mention the rear end in a top hat thing the game sometimes does on reinforcements of a double Mech squad.

DId you not take the axe on this mission? That free action axe throw has saved my rear end a few times in my last game, and there's no damage loss from it. Edit: Just got to that part in the video, but drat dude. You can move it from person to person. seaborgium fucked around with this message at 19:34 on Aug 18, 2016 |

Literally every other class has a more compelling reason to bring duplicates. If you bring, lets say, a salvo grenadier instead of a capacitor discharge specialist you could throw a plasma grenade and then just shoot the most threatening enemy remaining instead (with a few skills that add damage available as well). The grenadier can do that twice per mission, and makes it easier to kill the other enemies since they now lack cover. Not to mention the rear end in a top hat thing the game sometimes does on reinforcements of a double Mech squad. Just bring a ranger or gunslinger with bluescreen rounds and kill the robot instead man. I'm sure a multi-specialist squad is viable, but you take one specialist because that allows you to pick up whatever hacking rewards are on the map and a second does not help with that. It's far more compelling to bring: an extra grenadier for more armor shred, cover destruction, and chain shot/rupture/suppression; an extra ranger for scouting, reliable kills on low end enemies, or flanking rapid fire crits; an extra sharpshooter for another killzone, faceoff, or fan fire guy that either has really good and safe hit chances or a huge volume of attacks. seaborgium posted:DId you not take the axe on this mission? The reinforcements on that blacksite mission don't appear until after you grab the macguffin, and the first batch always drops very close to the evac point. So the best way to deal with them is to get on the roof, get everybody except the designated vial-grabber overwatching that area, then grab the thing and watch the fun. The axe weapon actually does one more point of damage than the ranger sword at the same tier, so it's usually a good idea to use that. Unless of course you have Hulk Hogan, who always hits for max damage. The only possible explanation is that he's actually leg-dropping everything, and the game only shows a slash because it doesn't have an animation for the signature move of Hulk "Leg Drop" Hogan. But remember, those hunter weapons are irreplacable. Even the grenade, which literally explodes but is somehow reconstructed in time for the next mission. And the pair of axes, even if you throw one of them at an alien and don't recover the alien's body. Jade Star posted:
Sadly, it's a pale imitation of the awesomeness that was the MEC punch in Enemy Within. It doesn't do as much damage, it doesn't cause aliens to fly back when it kills, it can miss, it's on a cooldown, and worst of all, there are no special kill animations. It does have the advantage of being usable at the end of a move action, so, with overdrive, a spark can make 3 moves and finish with a punch. This trick should be called "Whoosh and boosh".

When I got the specialty weapons on my run, I didn't read that the Bolt Caster only had one shot before reloading. I only used it for a few missions before shelving it, mostly for the 15% aim bonus on new recruits. I don't actually have a Gunslinger sniper, so the Shadowkeeper just sits on my primary sniper, who at least has Lightning Hands. The Axes went to my primary Ranger, and have never left her back unless she was healing up. If I had to guess, I'd say around 10 of her 100+ kills so far have been from the free throw ability of the axe.

So on personal stories about the Mutons, I recently ran into the same issue that Guava had when he first ran into the auto-counter vs Slash. Started out a new game of my own thanks to this save, got past the LP before this update and I first encountered Mutons. I put myself in the game because i'm a vain rear end in a top hat so I decide "hey I got this sick axe, lets finish off this muton" only to see my character not only get countered, but crit'd and instakilled. The best part: this was the morning before this current update. gently caress Mutons.
