It used to be (may still be i don't know) interesting to see which countries were making razor blades (Just from looking at the packaging). It usually coincided with who was being an arsehole internationally. It completely fails to surprise me that Australia has jumped on board that train.

Judge sympathises with Children's Court guard who had sex with 'worldly' 14-year-old

A former Children's Court security guard has been released on a good behaviour bond for having sex with a 14-year-old he met outside the court building, with a judge saying the man was "not made of steel".

Franco Abad, 32, had been in a sexual relationship with the girl for some weeks, believing she was 17, over the legal age of consent of 16.

http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/no-short-skirts-no-makeup-no-sexy-selfies--school-accused-of-slutshaming-20160819-gqwq6m.html

:negative: posted:

A Victorian school named on a porn-sharing website has been accused of "slut-shaming", after it hauled female students into an assembly and asked them to stop wearing short skirts.

Kambrya College, whose extraordinary transformation was documented in the ABC series Revolution School, asked all girls in years 7 to 10 to ensure their skirts were below their knees to "protect their integrity".

They were also asked to stop wearing make-up and sending "sexy selfies".

It came a day after the Berwick state school was named on a pornographic website that posted graphic photos of Australian schoolgirls.

A mother at the school, Catherine Manning, said that the girls were also asked to stop posting photos of themselves online.

"As a parent, I am MORTIFIED that my daughter was subjected to such appalling messaging at the hands of those entrusted to care for her," she wrote on Facebook.

"Please share this and demand that schools stop slut-shaming and victim-blaming.

"Stop letting boys off the hook for their appalling behaviour."

She told Fairfax Media that the school had missed the mark.

"It doesn't matter what the girls are wearing, it should be about the choices those boys make and we should be encouraging these girls to be who they are without being shamed."

They feel judged and victimised by school staff, like all eyes are on them, and they don't feel comfortable around their male peers. They feel their school has sexualised and demonised them, and compounded the problem by sending a strong message that it is them, the girls, who are responsible for the boys' behaviour, and that the boys are the victims here." – Catherine Manning

Ms Manning – who runs self-esteem workshops for adolescent boys and girls– said students were told that boys did not respect girls who wore short skirts.

It is understood that other parents have phoned the school to complain.

Kambrya College assistant principal Jo Wastle confirmed that the school held an assembly on Thursday where boys and girls were separated and spoken to about "dress codes, sexting, social media and respect".

"We chose to separate boys and girls and different years to create smaller groups and encourage open dialogue," she said.

"Anyone who saw the Revolution School series will see how seriously we take uniform policy here at Kambrya College. "

She said the assembly also provided an opportunity to discuss the school being named in relation to a website with indecent images of Australian schoolgirls.

"As far as we know none of our students were affected, but they had heard about it and we wanted to set their minds at rest," Ms Wastle said.

The school's uniform policy states that skirts should be on or below the knee and only light make-up should be worn.

On Wednesday, the school emailed parents saying it had been named on a website that refers to child pornography.

But principal Michael Muscat said that to the best of his knowledge, no current students were implicated in the matter.

"We are aware that a former student who graduated some years ago made a comment on the website thread and named our school," Mr Muscat said.

The principal said that the school would work with students over the coming days to reiterate the importance of "cyber safety and respect".

Joking about torture doesn't help electability. People start to feel that perhaps torture isn't very good when they laugh about it. Much better to talk about it as a Tough Choice. That'll keep those votes coming in for us mature parties.

Speaking of torture, I didn't need to be reminded of this:

quote:

“I expected the maximum reaction to my being the first woman prime minister to come in the first few months,” she said. “What I found living through the reality was that the sort of gendered stuff actually grew over time.”

Gillard singled out the ABC’s decision to fund a four-part sitcom titled At Home with Julia, which parodied her relationship with her partner, Tim Mathieson.

“They chose bizarrely, in my view, to finance a comedy where an impersonator played me,” she said of the state broadcaster. No similar program had been made of other prime ministers, before or since, she noted.

Gillard agreed with an academic quoted by the Atlantic who said sexism was more socially acceptable than racism.

“In some ways, I think we put a burden on women in the face of gender attacks that doesn’t necessarily play out in the face of racist attacks.”

She singled out her announcement of the carbon tax in 2011, which prompted protesters to rally against her outside Parliament House, some wielding signs such as “Ditch the witch” and “JuLIAR”. Tony Abbott, the then leader of the opposition, stood in front of them while condemning the tax.

“I have made the point since that, if Australia had an Aboriginal Australian prime minister and the opposition leader went and stood in front of signs that said ‘Sack the black’, or inserted any of the dreadful words we have for Aboriginal Australians, it would have been a career-ending moment,” she told the Atlantic.

“And if an Indigenous Australian prime minister had complained about that, I don’t think people would say, ‘Oh, he is just playing the victim.’

“But that is what gets said about women who complain about sexism. There is an added kind of layer that women leaders are just supposed to take it on the chin and not complain about it.”

I've never understood why At Home With Julia was ever made, except as some kind of peace offering to the conservatives who simply demanded more. The only similar thing I can think of is a song called Wargasm featuring Thatcher and Reagan and that was in the 80s, back when talking puppets of famous people was supposed to be funny.

But if there had been a Sack the Black moment, I think Julia is quite mistaken that it would have been career-ending.
