There's just an incredible bit of foreshadowing in the confrontation with Kuja that I'm not going to point out just yet. Suffice to say I'm glad FFIX was never voice-acted, because that would have greatly altered the subtleties of it.

Also I think Amarant has always been the guy that gets Tranced the least whenever I played for some reason.

EDIT: Update last page.

It really is a great scene, but what puts it at the top for me is when Vivi refers to her as "Dagger's mother" instead of "Queen Brahne". It's a small touch, but it says so much.

OK, I'm clearly an idiot because I don't know to what you are referring. Is it this Second Act business? Kuja talking about the strong supplanting the weak? Vivi's use of the term stop? Amarant carrying the kids? The reference to soulless puppets? The reference to ten years ago? A critical event at the Iifa tree being linked to that Canary play? This sequence is laden with foreshadowing.

I, on the other hand, would have liked to see this bit voice-acted, especially if a certain voice actor played Kuja. (Not going to post the name of the voice actor though, since those who know about the foreshadowing can probably guess, and those who don't would get what is being foreshadowed from the name. I'll spell it out later on when the foreshadowing is resolved.)

Dagger is probably my favorite leading lady from the series. She's not a perfect amazingly awesome stupendous OMG EVERYONE LOVES HER like Aeris, She's not bland as hell like Tifa, Yuna, and Terra, and she's not a spoiled brat like Rinoa. She's fleshed out very well. There's definitely different aspects to her personality that we see throughout the game. She's silly, confident, scared, sad, curious, loyal, ignorant, fun, and prone to make bad decisions. They did a great job at making her feel more human than a lot of characters, male and female, from the entire series.

FFIX has excellent character development in general. While Amarant is kind of a let down as noted by Mega64 since he joins at an awkward time and is generally overshadowed (which may have been intentional in a 'look how silly and petty this dude is when there's some seriously big stuff going on RIGHT OVER THERE) the supporting cast is great and the world in general has a lot of neat details to it.

Interesting fact about Amarant, he's the only party member with a name change from JP to English. His Japanese name is Salamander. It was probably changed because Salamander wouldn't fit in the character limit for names. Incidentally, this also means that just about every translation gives him a different name. He's known as Tarask in French and Mahagon in German.

Those couple of hours give Eiko ridiculously huge amounts of plot development and she already becomes essential to the story. Amarant could never join and you'd never miss him.

Amarant not only got back the stones, he very likely saved Vivi's life. Lani didn't just make Vivi bring the pendant forward JUST to keep Zidane from doing anything; remember, her (and Amarant's) other order was to assassinate Vivi as well. She probably had him bring the pendant to her so he'd be in position for her to kill off easily before making her escape.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN: He was also eating her ♥ majresty a barbecued fish and silence soup and a rock-fisted potato stew but he also ate just bread.

Bye again Quark. I'll miss your carefree attitude and impressive lobes.

I can get her nameplates.

Bort has bad stats. This is because Marcus had bad stats. Her base magic stone count is 12, which is just enough. Her speed is good and that's all that counts, really. Her magic is okay-ish too.

This is where I really feel the absence of the Madian's Ring. Trolls 'n' Gnolls (the 'olls) both cast Blizzara.

It's precarious if I get to flee, more or less.

Oh, right, boss.

Hilgigars has 3 attacks that all instantly kill whoever they hit.

My offense are Papito's Bio and Gitan swinging his sword. It's not very good damage. I miss Quark. Hell, I miss Tinhank.

Don't have a cow, man!

I've been too busy reviving my characters. I need to cast Floa-

gently caress!

Earthquake wipes everyone all the time without Float.

Welp! I take this chance to arm Gitan with a bit more strength and Man Eater.

This time, Bort gets a turn first thing and drops the Float.

However, Hilgigars hates Gitan.

Papito's Bio doesn't hit as hard as Gitan's attacks, and he only gets two before running out.

Gitan doesn't have Float due to being punched, but the other 3 get through.

Kurki is slain dick-first, but that's okay, it's not Gitan.

HOLY COW

Papito has enough MP to cast Fira after two Bios. It's not much but it's not nothing.

Curaga follows the usual rules: Annoying, but not a big deal as he's not killing us.

Also, the menu there is an Ether on Papito. They aren't that valuable, I'm serious.

We're back to the regular schedule.

And Papito's second Fira after depliting his MP again finishes off Hilgigars. Gitan got to attack twice. Thankfully, there was only one Earthquake the whole fight.

Abilities! 9 AP is a lot. If Gitan hasn't mastered Auto-Potion by now, then you'll need to do some stoppin'. Kukri has plenty of chances before she needs it mastered, at least.

Please be a good card...

That's all the explanation Hilgigars gets. He's hard like Beatrix 3 is. I have to fight him basically like normal but am level 1.

The conversation skips to here if you've never summoned anything with Bort. Fenrir is useless in this run. Whatever damage it would've done to Hilgigars, Bort's time and MP are better spent keeping the offense going and Float active.

7-directions and good stats? Be still my beating heart!

I get this thing since I sucked at plays. Dunno if it'll ever be useful.

Cheeseburgers, ones that make me fail to die, save points, girls that have levels.

Anyway I mess up the moogle allocation but it doesn't matter.

Disc 2 won't go gentle into that good night. The Fifa Tree is dangerous as heck.

Oh, welp, can't even get there.

Then Bort's passive chance to cast Phoenix on a part wipe kicks in! It doesn't deal damage but it revives the whole party which is slightly useful.

Note she doesn't need to actually know the Phoenix summon for this to happen. You just need the pinions.

The revive is good enough for a Flee.

BODY SLAM

Carbuncle is an eidolon that will make me fail to die. It's about the only summon Bort will ever actually use.

There are 3 screens of jogging from the entrence to the save moogle. They're very perilous.

Subject A: Stropers. Stropers tend to use Sweep which is unavoidably a total party wipe.

Unless Phoenix kicks in again...!

oh

well then

Attempt 2, and Gitan makes it past the first and second screens without beefing it!

This screen is long enough that you're bound to get a few encounters on it.

Like more Stropers. Thankfully, Gitan usually can Flee before they sweep.

Zombies are common too. They have two attacks that are instant kills, one that deals damage equal to their current HP, and a literal instant death spell.

Mocchi is your sign you made it past the branches.

But also your sign that poo poo's only going to get worse.

If you must blink, do it now.
It's kinda funny, in retrospect, how "Easy" the Iifa Tree is considering the dark and terrible weight the story places upon it. Between Garnet and Eiko's white magic, Vivi's black magic (zombies are incredibly weak to fire), and the plethora of pheonix downs and softs you should have access to, nothing in the whole dungeon really puts up much of a fight - unless you're significantly underleveled, of course. Even the boss can be one-shot if you surmise his deal from the rest of his minions.

This level one run is the first time I've ever thought of Iifa as potentially difficult.

Phoenix alone is worth taking even if she was completely useless.

In all honesty Zidane ends up as the least impressive character since outside of Flee, he has no real utility other than Soul Break gimmicks. Outside of Trance he can only hit one target at a time, and Steiner/Amarant can hit just as hard as he can.

Flee is really good in a level 1 game though.

FeyerbrandX

On the other hand, her being in the party is one less slot for someone to push poo poo in. So aside from either fights early on where abilities aren't available, or end game ones where HP is too high to just shotgun through their health in a turn she'd probably be ignored mid-game.

But what do I know? It wasn't until doing Fiesta that I played games without mindless cathartic grinding.
