I think a big thing that manyak was trying to articulate is that the best don't often compete against each other in mma. The average number of fights for a top 10 guy is less than three, and the amount of time any guy is in the top 10 is usually only a handful of years, and for most people it's like 2 max. So a lot of highly ranked fighters never actually beat any other highly ranked fighters. So even if you are currently ranked, for instance, number 4 in your division and have fought 23 times in the ufc, it's entirely possible that you have only fought three other guys in the top 15 and one of those guys doesn't actually fight in your weight class anymore, and another one of those guys beat you badly. But here you are, number 4 in the world based on the official rankings. Whereas in cycling I know there are a lot of different racing courts (clay, grass, turf, hard), and cyclists compete against one another in bike cycling tournaments dozens of times a year so a total ordering of overall performances can be created based on these repeated head to head matchups, which evens out over all different cycling courts even if one style of cycling is more well suited to a certain type of cycling court.

Anyways when it comes to rankings in mma I agree mostly with fatherdogs former ranking criteria which are: - only fights in a weight class impact a ranking at that weight class -entire career at that weight class is considered, but last 2 years are weighted much more heavily I guess he doesn't use those anymore

I think Nate ranked up so UFC can justify his pay. Think about it, who's going to pay a 15-ranked fighter millions of dollars?

manyak posted:They might not though. So Woodleys last fight to earn the title shot was a split decision over Kelvin Gastelum that easily couldve gone the other way, and as I said the judges are at times insanely bad and unqualified. Since he lost Gastelum had to take more fights and ended up losing to Magny, a fight which Woodley easily couldve lost too if he had to take it. Instead, Woodley waited and got the title shot (a pretty arbitrary decision by the UFC since other guys were getting good wins during his year off) and won whereas Gastelum is middle of the pack. So thats an example where two guys of roughly equal skill have drastically different career paths depending on the whims of bad judges and UFC matchmaking instead of merit theres 2 more pages after this, but I agree with it like it happened moments ago

Are we arguing that Gastelum and Woodley are fighters of roughly equal skill based on their close fight while also saying that styles make fights and sometimes a worse fighter will beat a better fighter every time just based on how they match up against each other?

# ? Aug 23, 2016 04:11 |

Yeah, Gastelum is a much better fighter than Woodley

Also, Kelvin was hosed either way promotionally because he missed weight by 9 pounds in that fight.

Theres a secret true better fighter and theres no way to know who it is, even if fighters fight each other multiple times in 5 round fights. The only way to know for sure is to compare who they each fought 9 years ago in japan or on an Indian reservation or something.

What I am saying is that Woodley seems to bring sadness to Goons so by that logic he'll knock out Nick in the first minute if they ever fight.
