All this time, I was thinking Sonic 2 had an extra boss if you got all the emeralds like Sonic 3. In fact, I actually thought they just had the same boss copy/pasted across two games. I remember the first time I watched a friend reach the end of Sonic 2. The final stage giving you no rings is absolutely brutal even if Mecha Sonic is really easy.

I do miss the old genesis Sonic, but I do not miss Sega of America's obsession with trying to make the franchise dark and gritty.

Yeah, honestly I think Sonic would always have done better as a genuine perma-'90s icon instead of trying to get with the edginess of the 2000s. It always felt a little too cartoony for the serious situations they stuck him in. "Oh no, the world is ending! Quick, call the 40-inch anthropomorphic blue rodent!" And while we're on the subject of the world crumbling around us, here's the other half of SegaSonic the Hedgehog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rit5L_b9NI

As far as I can tell, the controls for Segasonic were designed around the fact that arcade trackballs can free wheel. Which isn't really something that computer equipment can replicate, in addition to the fact that it's isometric which isn't something that most Dpads are designed to do that well. In something Super Adventure Rockman related, you should probably either look up the English translation of Electrical Communication, or have Lindsey do it for you. Because I seem to remember it being insane word salad.

I was hoping to post an alternate "angle" of the series that plays the US soundtrack for any of you heathens who prefer it to the groovin'er JP one. Might just upload the other ones separately? I don't know.

Alright, I love some Sonic CD. It's weird though, with Sonic games you want to run as fast as possible to the end of the stage, but with CD you want to slow down and look around the levels so you can time travel and find the robot generator. Personally I love taking time to look around the levels in the four different layouts. I'm sure most people never bother to even go to the two futures. I always thought it would be nice if there was a teleporter at the end of the stage so you could go back to the start if you wanted to. Seriously, what the hell was going on with Sega in the 90's? Who was running the company? I can't get over the mountain of bad decisions and terrible management they had going on.

Sonic CD's idea of no bottomless pits is a fantastic idea for level design. Why would they not continue doing that?

I think ultimately the choice was between "levels can be dangerous but smaller" vs. "levels can be sprawling but kinder", and they opted to go for skill over size. I'll be honest, I kinda like the direction they ultimately stuck with, I've never really been all that pleased with Sonic CD's level design. It all just feels really sorta... I don't know, not "amateur", just not very well thought out. It's like it's too bumpy or something, I don't know. Anyhow, very last night I was able to scramble and get two episodes posted, don't know how long it'll last but as long as it does...! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPwzzn0XBkU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQjHsJ7rGWU

I can definitely dig it, it's a neat addition to the game that I kinda wish was present in other games around the same time. Is Tails' AI not as simple as him doing whatever you tell Sonic to do? I thought, like in the Sonic 2 special stages, he just followed your button inputs at a slight delay. Sonic Chaos is neat. I'm pretty sure that's one of the Game Gear ones that I beat in Sonic Adventure DX.

Most of the time, yes. Tails usually matches what the player does, but there are plenty of times in both Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 where Tails seems to go rogue for a moment. He doesn't seem to Spin Dash when Sonic does (and seems to choose to do so randomly when you sit still, too). Otherwise, he does mostly keep pace with Sonic. Also, I'm beginning to remember how much I hated these Special Stages... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MOiaq5kRhw

Tails had two game gear games, one only came out in Japanquote:Witchcart, an old human witch who rides around in a specialised rail cart on an island she claims as her own, and is the main villain. She claims she is able to turn any dissenters into crystal. In the game, the goal of Tails is to free the island and its inhabitants from her tyranny.

Hey guys. Like I said in the other thread, things have been pretty aggressively complicated lately, but this past weekend was the bachelor party I'd been spending so much time stressing about, so things should finally start to breathe in the immediate future. The next Sonic video will go up late tomorrow, and we're gonna be hustling on catching the series up (since we've lost a week's worth of time by now). As a result of last week's insanity, I didn't get a chance to come in and share the latter half of Sonic Chaos, so here that is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PrDcvDmA40Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k492hw2dXE4 All in all, an unusually short-feeling game, but one with a lot more going for it (in my opinion) than the previous two Game Gear platformers. Next time, we're gonna take things in a bit of a weirder direction!

You guys run an emulator right? Since you mention the limited screen real estate I'm a bit surprised you don't just use the Master System versions when available, it at least would have made the first boss in Sonic 2 a bit more bearable.
|
# ? Aug 31, 2016 00:26 |

The only things we emulate currently are games for the Game Gear and Wonderswan (with occasional N64/GCN-era stuff only because the normal captured video looks horrible) -- we do have a Game Gear capture device, we just need to actually install it and we should be able to record directly from the handheld. Sonic 2 on Game Gear was a conscious choice, both because it was never released in the United States on the Master System, and... because it makes the game harder. Had I anticipated just how much harder, I might not have gone with it.

You didn't miss much with the true ending to Sonic Chaos (or at least on the Master System version). After Eggman escapes in his lift, he drops the final Chaos Emerald and then the ending is just Sonic running back with a massive Chaos Emerald over him which changed colour every so often.

Oh gross, I totally do remember that now. I got it as a kid a couple times, and I remember always feeling pretty well gypped for all that awkward Emerald hunting. It was a big, awkward round one too.

You'd think filming John and I separately would make producing the video easier. You'd apparently be wrong, I guess. Either way, now that our 2500th Let's Play video has come and gone, today we're kicking off our newest Sonic game: Sonic Spinball! So far, John's put up a decent fight, and sadly... yeah, we're going to start relying on savestates for really bad situations. This game is absolutely cruel, and we don't want another Kirby's Pinball Land situation on our hands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvMMRWqy_HA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o04GNalNilw

The weird thing is that Sonic + Pinball should be a slamdunk. It's really not a stretch to put the two together. Spinball is just so drat unforgiving though and the parts where you're meant to play as regular Sonic are all weird. It really should've just been straight up furry blue pinball.

If it's any consolation (and I suppose this is a bit of a spoiler if you were understandably not paying much attention during Sonic's attempted - and successful - revival during its "Sonic + Nintendo" phase in the early 2000s while Sega was more or less on fire), Sega ultimately did prove that "Sonic + pinball" could totally work if they played it a little straighter. It just took an extra decade to get there. It's actually better than Kirby's Pinball Land and Sonic Spinball put together, and the soundtrack is weirdly enough one of the best parts about it. Unfortunately, in the meantime... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_FlQ8cDLBU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tEMn8vMmr80

The physics seem really inconsistent too. And the path you need to go into are really angular to boot. So even when you're aiming, there is still no guarantee you'd get where you're going.
|
# ? Sep 6, 2016 04:19 |

Honestly, if the physics were better, I might actually be a lot more forgiving of this game. Maybe it's just the trauma this thing inflicted on me and my six AA batteries as a kid, but of the 158 games we've played on the channel so far, this is without question a "Bottom 5" candidate for me. Entirely possible for this to be the worst, even beyond Mega Man III.
