This may not completely fit in with this thread, but tonight I came across a sort of unnerving thing, at least to me. I was half-assedly doing some genealogy searches earlier, and when I typed my paternal grandfather's name in, I came across what looked like engagement and wedding announcements for my dad... but my mom wasn't the bride, and this wedding occurred seven years before theirs did. Signed up for a trial of newspapers.com to read the article, and yep, it's him. Our last name is really unusual, and there was absolutely no mistaking that it was him... it was the California town I was born in years later, my grandparents are mentioned in the article, his alma mater is correct, and he's rocking the sweet Jewfro he had back then. Only thing is, I had absolutely no idea he'd been married before. Neither he or my mom ever mentioned it. No judgment or anything, of course, people get divorced. My family's always been pretty open, though, and I'm not sure why he'd keep it a secret. It's totally none of my business, but I'm incredibly curious and don't know how to bring it up, or if I even should. I tried researching further, but her name is super common and I'm getting nowhere. I realize this is incredibly dull compared to a lot of the content itt, but this is sort of blowing my mind a little. Not what I expected to come across this Sunday evening, at any rate.

My mother's father is the only one that survived beyond divorce from her, and he had scars on his chest from her attacking him with a box-cutter. My mother had two long term dogs with her when she was a kid, and thought for sure Coco would be in good hands; he died less than a month later, with the story changing from "ran away" to "hit by car" to "found under the house." Now, she's a single dog-whistle racist and openly homophobic and every year she makes amends with my lesbian mother only to later bemoan how she won't be able to spend eternity with her daughter because she's an unrepentant sinner. Some of the stories my mother and her sister tell are like some straight up Mommy Dearest poo poo, with a dash of RAHOWA forced camping trips in NorCal. I didn't understand all of this as a kid and how my mother kept giving her chances to be changed, but seriously, witnessing an abusive relationship between your grandparents and parents is really tragic, if not unsettling, when you consider everyone else has a bevy of sweet nana stories to share. "Suicide" closes a lot of lines of inquiry. Conveniently. A number of cults which suffered outbreaks of suicide were often partly murder (see Jonestown).

My mom got into geneology and tracking the family tree, but definitely discovered a lot she didn't expect; some fun examples include first-cousin marriages (one of them as recent as, I believe, my great-great grandparents), and the fact that much of the tree is actually uncertain, because someone liked the family so much that he renounced his own family, adopted the family surname, and became the only surviving 'heir' of that generation. His original name is thought to be known, but for unsurprising reasons the family tree is very hazy before him on that side.

If the bus that hit him was systemic organ failure from being a massive alcoholic then yes he died in the gutter with tyre tracks on his face. - Great Great Grandad worked as a headshrinker during WW1, so that shell shocked troops could be returned to the trenches faster. That might not technically be criminal but I consider him to be a dog oval office for doing it. There's plenty more I could list out but frankly I'm not proud of my family background or their past.

When my father's brother died a few years ago, I went through old family documents and also took possession of an autobiography he (my uncle) had written. For context, he was born in 1937 in what is now Poland. The marriage certificate of his parents - my grandparents - was one of the documents in the stash I went through. It had some details on it about both bride and groom being certified "racially clean" by the German government. That was creepy just by itself. Similarly, there was a death certificate for a 1 year old boy, and another for a 2 year old - both brothers of my father's. In the weeks after reading those documents, I also read the autobiography. My grandparents got married in Danzig in the 1936 and started having children. He was a brick layer. Before too long, he was drafted into the German military. For the first few years of the war, he got to have regular visits home. After early 1945, he was taken prisoner by the soviets somewhere along the Eastern Front. He would not return home until 1949. Meanwhile, my grandmother awaited some kind of rescue from the advancing Russians. More and more refugees arrived and food got scarcer. My uncle wrote about going on regular food runs trying to find anything to eat in abandoned houses and cellars. His 1-year old brother died of hunger on April 6, 1945. His 2-year old brother followed him on September 29, 1945. Eventually they fled the city on a nearly 300 mile foot trek westward, ahead of the advancing Russians. They settled near the Western border of what would become East Germany. My grandfather returned from Russian Kriegsgefangenschaft in 1949. A few years later, he left for West Germany and started a new family. My grandmother, undeterred and with a very much "gently caress you" attitude, never remarried. Instead, she became the mayor of the town she was living in and was said to be a pretty awesome person. Unfortunately, I never got to know her - she died of cancer in the late 60's. As a teenager, I stumbled across some of my mom's old documents while looking for something in the garage. They had a last name that wasn't our family name or our maiden name, so I asked her about it. It turns out that she was briefly married before meeting my dad. That's also when I found out that that marriage ended because of a miscarriage.

my great uncle, a (minor) local politician, was tied up at gunpoint, tasered by hired goons, and shoved into his jacuzzi face first followed by a plugged in tv set. this was on the 80s when, i guess, that could kill you. hired goons are still in jail. uncle was also possibly a bootlegger since a distant relatives vineyard biography implicates him in the act.

My grandmother's great uncle owned a tavern/boarding house around the turn of the century. One of his patron's had been letting a friend sleep on the couch without paying anything. Well great-great-great-Uncle wasn't having a bar of this. He confronted his errant boarder while he was drinking at the bar, and told him that his friend had to pay up or get out. Things were getting heated, and a fight was obviously about to begin. Great-great-great-Uncle uttered the phrase "I am the strongest in Auckland, and I fear no man." In the ensuing brawl, he was hit in the head with a bottle of whisky and died some days later. I guess that's not really unnerving, but it's my favourite story I have about my family.

It was a little black book that acted as a kind of family tree, filled out by my grandfather while he was living in Poland to prove neither he nor my grandmother were Jewish or whatever. Each page had a rubber stamped Nazi eagle on it. Just holding it and knowing some dick in the third reich had his grubby Nazi hands all over it was pretty messed up. My great-Grandfather was really into that, so I have about three or four of those, all meticulously filled out, going back to the late 17th century. Pretty cool. Although asking Grandma about it she just casually mentioned that his sister (her aunt) killed herself along with her husband and their 16 year old daughter just before the Red Army marched into town. So I guess having a detailed family tree doesn't really feel all that hosed up in comparison.
