I'm a huge metalhead so obviously I've read all the Mayhem drama before, but I'd never even heard that NME story before. Thanks for sharing!

On a similar note, these two bands might be of interest to the thread, but purely for musical reasons.

-Remember how earlier in the thread it was a running joke that every serial killer has a metal song dedicated to them? Church of Misery has done one for just about every killer in the book. Despite playing the typically non-evil subgenre of stoner metal, this Japanese group writes exclusively about serial killers, both famous and obscure. All set to the grooviest riffs in the world.
https://youtu.be/aRm_JThG35g

-If you're fascinated by Dahmer, check out Chicago death/grind band Macabre, who did a concept album that tells his life story (it's called Dahmer, of course). They clearly had fun with it, but also did their research.

This may not completely fit in with this thread, but tonight I came across a sort of unnerving thing, at least to me. I was half-assedly doing some genealogy searches earlier, and when I typed my paternal grandfather's name in, I came across what looked like engagement and wedding announcements for my dad... but my mom wasn't the bride, and this wedding occurred seven years before theirs did. Signed up for a trial of newspapers.com to read the article, and yep, it's him. Our last name is really unusual, and there was absolutely no mistaking that it was him... it was the California town I was born in years later, my grandparents are mentioned in the article, his alma mater is correct, and he's rocking the sweet Jewfro he had back then. Only thing is, I had absolutely no idea he'd been married before. Neither he or my mom ever mentioned it.

No judgment or anything, of course, people get divorced. My family's always been pretty open, though, and I'm not sure why he'd keep it a secret. It's totally none of my business, but I'm incredibly curious and don't know how to bring it up, or if I even should. I tried researching further, but her name is super common and I'm getting nowhere.

I realize this is incredibly dull compared to a lot of the content itt, but this is sort of blowing my mind a little. Not what I expected to come across this Sunday evening, at any rate.

I learned that my grandmother was potentially a black-widow, as she became moderately wealthy after marrying about 7(?) dudes with moderately good salaries, who died within a five year window. My mother's father is the only one that survived beyond divorce from her, and he had scars on his chest from her attacking him with a box-cutter.

She also would poison strays (according to HER father, before he passed), but before we knew this, we left our dog with her when she offered to take give him a forever home. My mother had two long term dogs with her when she was a kid, and thought for sure Coco would be in good hands; he died less than a month later, with the story changing from "ran away" to "hit by car" to "found under the house."

Now, she's a single dog-whistle racist and openly homophobic and every year she makes amends with my lesbian mother only to later bemoan how she won't be able to spend eternity with her daughter because she's an unrepentant sinner.

Some of the stories my mother and her sister tell are like some straight up Mommy Dearest poo poo, with a dash of RAHOWA forced camping trips in NorCal.

I didn't understand all of this as a kid and how my mother kept giving her chances to be changed, but seriously, witnessing an abusive relationship between your grandparents and parents is really tragic, if not unsettling, when you consider everyone else has a bevy of sweet nana stories to share.

The Order of the Solar Temple, also known as Ordre du Temple Solaire (OTS) in French and the International Chivalric Organization of the Solar Tradition or simply as The Solar Temple, is a secret society that claims to be based upon the ideals of the Knights Templar. OTS was started by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret in 1984 in Geneva as l'Ordre International Chevaleresque de Tradition Solaire (OICTS) and later renamed Ordre du Temple Solaire.
Crazy cults headed up by Crowley wannabes are pretty run-of-the-mill, but this one has the distinction of being responsible for well over 70 deaths through a series of murders and mass suicides. A critic and ex-member of the cult were murdered, and their infant son stabbed through the heart with a wooden stake because the cult leader had pronounced him to be the Antichrist (which I guess is the same as being a vampire). The mass murder-suicides began shortly thereafter, with dozens of cult members dead and their bodies arranged in occult patterns in secret mirror-lined underground chapels.

I was going to do an effort post on this a while back but forgot. Apparently there was police involvement (cops being members) and a a lot of the "suicides" were from a police handgun. It seems it was more like a Masonic, wife-swapping sort of deal (with harvesting of wealthy members' assets) which turned dark. there was definitely some sort of cover-up as there was no proper investigation. "Suicide" closes a lot of lines of inquiry. Conveniently. A number of cults which suffered outbreaks of suicide were often partly murder (see Jonestown).

Geneology is a fun little hobby for this reason. My mom got into geneology and tracking the family tree, but definitely discovered a lot she didn't expect; some fun examples include first-cousin marriages (one of them as recent as, I believe, my great-great grandparents), and the fact that much of the tree is actually uncertain, because someone liked the family so much that he renounced his own family, adopted the family surname, and became the only surviving 'heir' of that generation. His original name is thought to be known, but for unsurprising reasons the family tree is very hazy before him on that side.

I'm not certain my mom knows, and I'm hesitant to bring it up with her or my dad in case she doesn't. I know they were both seeing other people when they got together, but I assumed they were just boyfriends/girlfriends. If he left his wife for her (they got married in part because my mom was pregnant with me), that might go some ways towards explaining why my grandma on that side was always hostile towards my mom. My godfather might be a safer bet, but I haven't talked to him in years and I'm pretty sure he'd tell my dad if I contacted him out of the blue. Other than that, no. There seems to be very little info around about these guys in English, particularly the identity of the guy mentioned only as "Vlad." Elsewhere, I saw him referred to as an Iranian immigrant. Can any Swedish speakers here poke around and see if you can find any more than that? He sounds, uh ... interesting.

quote:

During their investigations, the police interrogated former members of the MLO, who described the organisation and narrated the occult ceremonies they had attended. Rituals included meditation, invocations of demons and animal sacrifices – cats, which were bought through classified ads. During the weeks that preceded the murder of Josef ben Meddour, Vlad had been more and more extremist in his speech, and the idea of performing human sacrifices, followed by a mass suicide, was discussed at length. During a meeting at Nödtveidt's place, a list of possible victims was made. It included a former follower who had defected, band members from Dissection, and even Nödtveidt's girlfriend.

Nah, he's never been a practicing Jew, just a partially ethnic one, and my grandma's family was Christian. Previous marriages aside, she had beef with the fact my mom's Polish, because old people's racism is fairly all-encompassing

Anyway, I think his paternal grandparents focused pretty hard on assimilation once they came to the US. The fact that my short, swarthy dad married two tall blonde ladies might play into that somewhat, at least subconsciously.

Back in the day you basically had to marry to be boyfriends/girlfriends. It might not be a big deal. My dad married a girl in the 60's because they wanted to go to the movies (her dad was a strict Christian).

Now for some content. Surprisingly good writing for a buzzfeed article, and one of the more disturbing stories about disability I've read.

creepy family posted:

"Dee Dee was 48 years old, originally from Louisiana. She was a large, affable-looking person, which she reinforced by dressing in bright, cheerful colors. She had curly brown hair she liked to hold back with ribbons. People who knew her remember her as generous with her time and, when she could be, generous with money. She could make friends quickly and inspire deep devotion. She did not have a job, but instead served as a full-time caretaker for Gypsy Rose, her teenage daughter.

Gypsy was a tiny thing, perhaps 5 feet tall as far as anyone could guess. She was confined to a wheelchair. Her round face was overwhelmed by a pair of owlish glasses. She was pale and skinny, and her teeth were crumbling and painful. She had a feeding tube. Sometimes Dee Dee had to drag an oxygen tank around with them, nasal cannula looped around Gypsy’s small ears. Ask about her daughter’s diagnoses, and Dee Dee would reel off a list as long as her arm: chromosomal defects, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, severe asthma, sleep apnea, eye problems. It had always been this way, Dee Dee said, ever since Gypsy was a baby."

Sounds like a model mother of a disabled child, right?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-brewery_syndrome

quote:

Auto-brewery syndrome, also known as gut fermentation syndrome, is a rare medical condition in which intoxicating quantities of ethanol are produced through endogenous fermentation within the digestive system.[1][2] One gastrointestinal organism, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a type of yeast, has been identified as a pathogen for this condition.

Claims of endogenous fermentation of this type have been used as a defense against drunk driving charges.[3][4][5]

One case went undetected for 20 years.[6]

It has also been investigated, but eliminated, as a possible cause of sudden infant death syndrome.[7]

A variant occurs in persons with liver abnormalities that prevent them from excreting or breaking down alcohol normally. Patients with this condition can develop symptoms of auto-brewery syndrome even when the gut yeast produces a quantity of alcohol that is too small to intoxicate a healthy individual.[8]

The effects of the disease can have profound effects on everyday life. As well, the recurring side effects of dizziness, dry mouth, hangovers, disorientation, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome can lead to other health problems such as depression, anxiety and poor productivity in employment. The random state of intoxication can lead to personal difficulties, and the relative obscurity of the condition can also make it hard to seek treatment.[9]

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/he...d764f7b0929ec82

quote:

IMAGINE being able to brew beer in your stomach without having a drop of alcohol. That may sound like heaven to some, but in fact, it’s a living nightmare.

People with auto-brewery syndrome can get drunk simply from eating bread, potatoes or rice. An overgrowth of yeast in the gut causes it to ferment carbs into booze, sending their blood alcohol levels soaring.

Breathalyser tests on people with the condition reveal blood alcohol levels that could kill an ordinary person. And the hangovers are horrendous.

“There was an initial buzz, a slight feeling of being tipsy, but mainly the symptoms were the hangover,” Matthew Hogg told news.com.au

“If I had a meal that included starchy foods, I’d wake up with a hangover you’d expect from a couple of bottles of wine or ten pints of beer. I’d have a banging headache, I’d be sick and I’d have cold sweats and the shakes. It was like the worst hangover imaginable.”

It took 20 years for 36-year-old Matthew, from Yorkshire, to work out what was wrong with him.

“All through my childhood, I had chronic infections — nose and throat, stomach pains, colic. I was fatigued and drained. The doctors were a bit clueless. I was diagnosed with ME because they couldn’t really find answers.”

In his teens, Matthew tried to ignore his problems, playing sport, socialising and drinking with friends. But he couldn’t keep it up.

“I got worse and worse hangovers. I managed one semester at uni and then I was bedridden for the next few years. I went home to live with my parents, I stopped going out. I also started suffering from depression.

“I wasn’t drinking any alcohol, but I was still feeling intoxicated.”

Matthew made the most of his time laid up in bed. He ordered medical books online and eventually came across research from the 1980s on something called ‘yeast syndrome’.

“That was the Eureka moment,” he said. He went to see private specialists doing pioneering work on the field, spending thousands of dollars on tests, and discovered that his abnormal blood alcohol levels were indeed caused by excess yeast fermenting in his gut.

Managing the condition remains a challenge.

Matthew follows a no-carb, Atkins-style diet, eating only meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds and vegetables, but he hasn’t found a cure. He also takes anti-fungal medication and probiotics.
“I haven’t been able to live a normal life,” he said. “I can’t work because I’m so tired all the time, my concentration and focus isn't good.”

Instead, he studied for a degree in nutritional medicine and started a website called the Environmental Illness Resource to help others with unusual conditions. He’s been cited in research and regularly hears from people all over the world, some of whom credit him with saving their lives. “There’s no point wallowing,” he said. “You have to make the most of what you’ve got.”
People with auto brewery syndrome have to avoid alcohol completely, since even a tiny amount can trigger an episode, as well as eliminating yeast and mould from their environment. The condition is still not fully understood, and experts suspect there could be a genetic component.

Barbara Cordell, Dean of Nursing and Health Sciences at Panola College in Texas, became interested in the issue after watching it affect her 61-year-old friend, Joe.

“He would be intoxicated but swore he hadn’t touched a drink,” she told news.com.au

“His wife and I thought he must be hiding it, keeping it in his truck.”

At first, Joe had two or three episodes a year, but that steadily increased until he was having two or three a week. He thought he must have low blood sugar and would often eat during attacks, probably the worst thing he could have done. Eventually, he was taken to the emergency room for acute intoxication, disorientated and with a dangerously high blood alcohol level of 0.37.

Barbara began researching the subject and learnt what was really going on. She was able to get treatment for Joe and became an expert on the subject, consulting with sufferers in Canada, Spain, Japan and France. She’s heard from about 30 people, but suspects far more have the condition without understanding it.

One recovering alcoholic who hadn’t had a drop in 25 years said he had suddenly developed auto-brewery syndrome three years ago. It can be very distressing.

“I’ve been contacted by people who had gone reclusive because they don’t know what’s going on with them,” said Barbara. “There are probably a lot of people who become depressed and stay at home.”

Nick Hess, 34, came across her research online, after years of suffering. His wife had at one point searched the house from top to bottom for hidden alcohol.

“I thought everyone was just giving me a rough time, until my wife filmed me and then I saw it — I looked drunk,” he told the BBC.

“It was weird, I’d eat some carbs and all of a sudden I was goofy, vulgar. Every day for a year, I’d wake up and vomit.”

Doctors found he had 400 per cent more yeast in his gut than he should. Even now, he still has a couple of episodes a month, and is fighting a drink-driving charge.

There often isn’t an easy solution for sufferers. Barbara is working with three doctors and a research scientist looking at the intestinal microbiome, but her research is still in the early stages, and she says some respond better to anti-fungal medication than others.

“It’s very painful for family members to watch a loved one go through, especially when they don’t respond to the drugs,’ said Barbara.

“One man relapsed several times. People have lost jobs and got DWIs. It’s very frightening because you never know when you’ll become drunk. It’s terrible that you can’t trust yourself to drive.”

Incredibly, sufferers can become far drunker than normal people and continue to function.

“We always hear that after a certain level, you just pass out, but a lot of people don’t, they function at extraordinary levels,” said Barbara.

Plus plenty of people still don’t believe them.

“The notion that a motorist’s state of intoxication was caused by endogenously produced ethanol lacks merit,” concluded a US study in 2000.

Getting drunk without drinking isn’t a blessing, it’s a curse.

Anyone done an ancestry search and discovered a criminal?

I don't need to do an ancestry search to find the criminals in my family, a lot of them are still kicking it/in living memory:

A quick break down of stuff from my hosed up family:

- Grand dad (Who was a member of several occult fraternities in the UK and also quite high up in the Masonic Order) got grandma institutionalised in a Seventh Day Adventist run facility for about six months. That twisted gently caress died painfully and alone of a blood disorder and that continues to make me happy.

- Relatives throughout my family (and extended family) (not going to say who or what they did because SoL lol) did a handful of big black market deals to help get their families set up in life (finance houses, private school, etc)

- Narrative on the other side of my family is that grand dad was killed as a pedestrian involved in an MVA. If the bus that hit him was systemic organ failure from being a massive alcoholic then yes he died in the gutter with tyre tracks on his face.

- Great Great Grandad worked as a headshrinker during WW1, so that shell shocked troops could be returned to the trenches faster. That might not technically be criminal but I consider him to be a dog oval office for doing it.

There's plenty more I could list out but frankly I'm not proud of my family background or their past.

Hier graben!
When my father's brother died a few years ago, I went through old family documents and also took possession of an autobiography he (my uncle) had written.
For context, he was born in 1937 in what is now Poland. The marriage certificate of his parents - my grandparents - was one of the documents in the stash I went through. It had some details on it about both bride and groom being certified "racially clean" by the German government. That was creepy just by itself.
Similarly, there was a death certificate for a 1 year old boy, and another for a 2 year old - both brothers of my father's.
In the weeks after reading those documents, I also read the autobiography. My grandparents got married in Danzig in the 1936 and started having children. He was a brick layer. Before too long, he was drafted into the German military. For the first few years of the war, he got to have regular visits home. After early 1945, he was taken prisoner by the soviets somewhere along the Eastern Front. He would not return home until 1949.
Meanwhile, my grandmother awaited some kind of rescue from the advancing Russians. More and more refugees arrived and food got scarcer. My uncle wrote about going on regular food runs trying to find anything to eat in abandoned houses and cellars. His 1-year old brother died of hunger on April 6, 1945. His 2-year old brother followed him on September 29, 1945.
Eventually they fled the city on a nearly 300 mile foot trek westward, ahead of the advancing Russians. They settled near the Western border of what would become East Germany. My grandfather returned from Russian Kriegsgefangenschaft in 1949. A few years later, he left for West Germany and started a new family. My grandmother, undeterred and with a very much "gently caress you" attitude, never remarried. Instead, she became the mayor of the town she was living in and was said to be a pretty awesome person. Unfortunately, I never got to know her - she died of cancer in the late 60's.

Anyways, it was and continues to be an unnerving story for me because it brings history right into my face.

As a teenager, I stumbled across some of my mom's old documents while looking for something in the garage. They had a last name that wasn't our family name or our maiden name, so I asked her about it.

It turns out that she was briefly married before meeting my dad. That's also when I found out that that marriage ended because of a miscarriage.

Could you ask your mum? Is there anyone in the family who might help? Do you know any of your dad's old friends? Let us know how it works out. It is kind of unnerving to find out your family history is a lot odder than you expected.

Has anyone else in this thread discovered things about their family histories that they would rather have not known about? Anyone done an ancestry search and discovered a criminal?

I am pretty closely related to Tonya Harding if that counts.

I have something similar that I posted about in the family secrets e/n thread yesterday. It was a little black book that acted as a kind of family tree, filled out by my grandfather while he was living in Poland to prove neither he nor my grandmother were Jewish or whatever. Each page had a rubber stamped Nazi eagle on it. Just holding it and knowing some dick in the third reich had his grubby Nazi hands all over it was pretty messed up.

its a neat trick, but you can only do it once
my great uncle, a (minor) local politician, was tied up at gunpoint, tasered by hired goons, and shoved into his jacuzzi face first followed by a plugged in tv set. this was on the 80s when, i guess, that could kill you. hired goons are still in jail. uncle was also possibly a bootlegger since a distant relatives vineyard biography implicates him in the act.

I found this out about my dad when I was being put in a psych ward at 16. Either ask your mom or just research yourself imo.

I asked my dad like a month later and it turns out he divorced his first wife because they had a child that died at the age of 2.

Kind of a derail but that's my story

Edit: this has stuck with me cause I attempted suicide literally like, three hours before I learned Dad had been married

Seven for beauty that blossoms and dies

My grandmother's great uncle owned a tavern/boarding house around the turn of the century. One of his patron's had been letting a friend sleep on the couch without paying anything. Well great-great-great-Uncle wasn't having a bar of this. He confronted his errant boarder while he was drinking at the bar, and told him that his friend had to pay up or get out. Things were getting heated, and a fight was obviously about to begin.

Great-great-great-Uncle uttered the phrase "I am the strongest in Auckland, and I fear no man."

In the ensuing brawl, he was hit in the head with a bottle of whisky and died some days later.

I guess that's not really unnerving, but it's my favourite story I have about my family.

My great-Grandfather was really into that, so I have about three or four of those, all meticulously filled out, going back to the late 17th century. Pretty cool. Although asking Grandma about it she just casually mentioned that his sister (her aunt) killed herself along with her husband and their 16 year old daughter just before the Red Army marched into town. So I guess having a detailed family tree doesn't really feel all that hosed up in comparison.
