i don't think being reincarnated into a modern game setting has ever been done. couldn't the protagonist just say "gently caress this noise" and go off to do literally anything other than dealing with awful otome game scenarios?

Hell, even in non-modern settings that's an option. Common Sense of a Duke's Daughter is basically exactly that. "Oh snap, I'm the evil bitch and this is the bad end? Well, gently caress that noise then, I'ma go off and invent chocolate, peace out assholes."

poo poo is going off the rails really quickly in My Disciple Died Yet Again, but the writing is still as top-notch as it's always been.

quote:

On the day he left, those ball-shaped creatures in the yard were all very unhappy, as they came to send him off altogether, and had even chased after him for several hundred meters. Especially that plump celestial crane with its floppy wings, which fell down from the sky time and time again, only to pick itself back up and chase after him again and again. That scene where it sent him off eighteen miles away was simply too touching.

Zhu Yao waved the handkerchief in her hand. Grandmaster, you can be at ease. These fat animals which you have raised, I will definitely eat them all.

Edit: Romance RPG has just hit it's penultimate (or close to) chapter, and the climax of the story is so frikkin' sweet it makes my teeth hurt. :3:

How is "I’ll Live My Second Life!"? I've read about 20 chapters and it's pretty enjoyable so far (better translation than most, too), but it's still technically in the beginning plot-wise so it's hard to say what direction it'll take.

I think it's kind of similar in tone to The Man Picked Up by the Gods, in that the story basically has no real point. Like, the main character does have a concrete goal... but that goal is "To live and be happy" which she's already doing... so... yeah. It's almost like a slice-of-life story, except it's not? I don't really know how else to explain it.

I like it, but I also like a lot of crap so maybe I'm not the best judge. :v:

Edit: A Hero's War updated, and the new chapter is pretty drat good. The Fuka's progress is nice, and seeing the dark side of Minmay along with his burden kicks rear end, I think the best of all is watching the relationship between Cato and Lamdar finally start to grow some legs. I am such a sucker for burgeoning love stories between two people who have absolutely no loving idea what love is. :allears:

Yeah, there's not really any overarching plot to speak of so far (I'm at chapter 60-something now) other than possibly figuring out what the deal is with her sister*. I'm actually enjoying it, even though I don't usually enjoy these more aimless/slice-of-life WNs. Some of the jokes are pretty funny. I find that I have an easier time tolerating non-action shoujo WNs than ones aimed at a male audience.

*I'm mostly curious about the contradiction inherent in the fact that we're repeatedly told by everyone, including the protagonist, that Fiiru is a really kind person, but Fiiru apparently did nothing to help Fii despite Fii being treated like poo poo throughout her entire childhood. It isn't really plausible that Fiiru somehow was unaware of Fii's treatment. They might try excusing it as Fiiru thinking that Fii wouldn't want her help, but that would be kind of BS; Fiiru could have at least expressed to her maids/etc that she wanted people to be nice to her sister. Given how we're explicitly told how everyone wanted to curry favor with Fiiru, it seems like Fiiru simply expressing fondness towards Fii would be sufficient to make other people treat Fii kindly.

So I guess I'm kind of holding out in the hopes of there being some sort of conflict involving her sister, even though I don't think there's going to be one.

Hero's War really makes me realize that being dropped into a medieval setting (even one with magic) is functionally like coming out of a fallout shelter after an apocalypse. You have to figure out how to put back together a functioning modern society as we know with bare bones knowledge of how things work and far too little tools to do it with. In a sense, being transplanted from one world to another that's on a much lower tech level is a personal apocalypse by itself.

The thing I like the best about A Hero's War is that the protagonist actually depends on the people around him. Even among stories that are similar, like the one about the Blacksmith that ends up on a medieval island or 1632, the protagonist(s) simply works his/her/their way through setting everything up alone. Sure, allies are recruited. A lot of time expectations are lowered or dropped. But AHW is one of the few gems that actually has the protag adapt to the world, and depend on its inhabitants to meld the previous knowledge into the new world. Every time Cato gets excited about someone else figuring out a way to implement modern knowledge into the fantasy setting it just reinforces how good a protagonist he is.

Edit: Looks like Oniichanyamate has picked up a new series, The Pseudo-Kunoichi From Another World. Only three chapters so far, but it features the rare lesbian protagonist, so it might be interesting? In other news, with the latest update of I Appear to have been Reincarnated as a Love Interest in an Otome Game the translator has finally finished the final side story, completing the series. So for those of you like Serious Frolicking, who don't read anything but completed series, time to get on this poo poo. It's a really good story, aside from the slightly confusing swerve into homophobia for the final few chapters, and the troubling penultimate Side Story which ramps that up another notch. From all the XianXia I read I'm surprised that a justice system or cops even exists in one novel. Oh no, don't worry. The system is still hosed as all hell if you don't have strength or money.

quote:

Just like how you can donate to the Dojo to earn contribution points, you can also donate to the country to earn contribution points.

10 thousand Chinese dollars is one contribution point.

100 million Chinese dollars is 10,000 contribution points, which is the one star rank!

If Zhang Ze Hu doesn’t want to negotiate with Luo Feng, then the only solution left is to donate 100 million to the country for his nephew and let his nephew get the 1 star rank. As a one star ranked civilian, Zhang Hao Bai is granted special rights. He can’t go to jail for too long just because of the conflict between him and Luo Feng.

It's just gleefully open about the bias, instead of tediously roundabout like most xianxia.

Yeah that's why I kind of loathe XianXia, other stories find a system they don't like and proceed to smash it to bits like Kumo or any cyberpunk novel. XianXia protagonists LOVE the corrupt anarchistic world system, the system basically rewards them for selfishness, bribery, manipulating people, reputation over lives, they can be the bullies, enemies basically frame themselves, "friends" are mere choirboys/trophy doll wives, the Confucian ideal that older = better, scams, preventing information to be spread, ignore Buddhist teachings until it benefits them and no one weaker than them can ever oppose them or dare even to disagree.

Oh and don't forget it's okay to topple people, but when the antagonist topples a "maiden's place through trickery" it's bad. Nie Li you are literally no better than the Spirit Emperor.

This offends me on every personal worldview I hold. It's by every way I slice it, Chaotic Evil, purely chaos and anarchy. If you replaced XianXia with the word "hell" and "demons" from DnD or any other Fantasy TRPG, nothing changes.

Yeah, I loving love it when xianxia protagonists get all umbraged and pissed about somebody flaunting their wealth or subverting the system, then when they flaunt their wealth and subvert the system, everyone claps and cheers their cleverness and talent. I mean, ok, if your whole moral system revolves around "What's good for my family is good period" that's fine and everything, but you don't get to claim any loving moral high ground when other people apply the same loving value system.

In other news, Swallowed Star is going Full Zoolander.

To clarify, the way he's trying to describe the word "speed" is referring to the Chinese calligraphy symbol for speed, 速, and usually in calligraphy they usually talk about how it holds the "dao" of that character when it's very well written. It's something that's lost in context when translated, so I understand if you think it's kind of hilarious that simply writing a word in huge font is amazing.

I really dont know where to post this, but after finishing up ISSTH and having loved ROTK I went back to the west and started reading Le Morte d'Arthur. I think I tend to subconsciously think that people from ages past were a little more reserved and dignified but this line is another reminder that no matter where you are in history, people have pretty much always fundamentally been the same:

"and he slew a great giant named Galapas, which was a man of a huge quantity
and height, he shorted him and smote off both his legs by
the knees, saying, Now art thou better of a size to deal with
than thou were, and after smote off his head. "

Even in the 1400s people wanted thier king to deliver Schwarzenegger style quips right after wrecking someone.

I like medieval literature. It can be very direct and blunt and occasionally comes with an endearing kind of sarcasm. Like when Simon de Montfort died at the Siege of Toulouse during the Albigensian crusade, and a not-so-friendly southern author recalls the event:

"…there was in the town a mangonel built by a carpenter and dragged with its platform from St Sermin. This was worked by noblewomen, by little girls and men’s wives, and now a stone arrived just where it was needed and struck Count Simon on his steel helmet, shattering his eyes, brains, back teeth, forehead and jaw. Bleeding and black, the count dropped dead on the ground. (...) How many knights and barons you would have heard lamenting, weeping under their helmets and crying out in anger! Aloud they exclaimed, “God, it is not right to let the count be killed! How stupid to serve you, to fight for you, when the daring count who was kind and daring, is killed by a stone like a criminal! Since you strike and slay your own servants, there’s no work for us here any more!"

I love how the difficulties in "reinventing" various products/technologies are actually accurately represented in Ascendance of a Bookworm. I think it's the only WN with this premise that doesn't involve the protagonist just magically making everything work without any trouble.

edit: The one thing I find kinda funny is that I'm pretty sure Maine could accomplish her goal of reading books a lot faster if she just focused on making as much money as possible in order to afford books (instead of trying to make the books herself). The shampoo alone would probably net her a small fortune, and once she has more money there's no limit to the number of relatively simply modern things she could reinvent; her main limitation currently is her poor constitution and lack of materials. Obviously she would want to eventually facilitate the switch from parchment to paper, but that would be a lot easier with money and employees.
