You know that's not what Doc Hawkins meant when they talked about Goldwater's ideas, right? Besides, waitwhatno brought up Trump as a comparison to Europe's own batch of fascists. It's pretty likely that Le Pen will do a lot better than Trump, even if she doesn't win. And both the French Republicans and the Socialists have been seeking to attract her base for a while now. Both parties have no real solutions for France's economic issues so they're going for plan B: scapegoat the Muslims. You can guess what that brings to mind, I think.

Yeah, they had some dumb "This happened 50 years ago so obviously it'll happen again" extrapolation in mind.

Outside of white progressives that inhabit D&D, there is no group comparable to Reagan Democrats in the current Democratic Party, so there is no chance of Trump becoming a Goldwater figure.

It's probably the best/safest European country to emigrate to, next to Iceland. If you get to the point that fascist gangs roam the streets of Amsterdam and Den Hague, then the rest of the Europe would have already been turned into a Mad Max wasteland long before.

I was just assuming because of PVV and based on what he posted. For what it's worth my Eastern European ex worked in a cafe in Haag for a summer and she really liked it there so you're probably right.

Now in Britain, I dunno. There's always been a lot of nasty xenophobia around, but before the referendum it was more directed at Asians(meaning Indian in the UK)/East Asians/Muslims, now I've been told to "go back home" several times (including by pizza delivery guy, which was kinda funny because I was standing in my apartment at the time) and had a drunken English nationalist rant to me about how he has English blood and how foreigners aren't entitled to be in Britain and whatnot else. Anecdotal but there you go.

That's all kinda delusional. AFAIK Le Pen is polling at ~30%, while Trump is around ~40%. (And Trump's program is so much more extremist and opposed to western values than hers.)

Yeah, Trump is not going to be there in 4 years, that's not the scary part. The scary part is that ~40% of your population has completely lost their minds and can easily be riled up to do anything some narcissistic demagogue wants them to do. For a completely arbitrary bullshit reason.

That's a good point, though I wasn't thinking so far as a future Reagan-analogue, just a viable Republican party with recognizably "Trumpist" policy positions. Which I suppose means it was even more of a shitpost than you thought!

Well, I thought it was for reasons of economic stagnation shared to some degree between almost all the developed nations who are having similar outbreaks of populist isolationism...but I might be imagining the parallels there as well.

I don't think he is. Her base distrust all "establishment" politicians and he's certainly no exception. No, I think what will really help him is that Hollande was supposed to be the lesser evil, uncharismatic but effective, but turned out to be poo poo.

Edit: Hollande literally pledged not to run again if he failed to lower unemployment. Well, the election's in a little over 6 months away and unemployment is at 10%.

Uh I think you'll find that in January 2016 unemployment was 10,2%, and last month was 9,9%, the lowest since January 2014(at 10,1%). So he's right on track it seems to secure nominations, and even reelection!

You do know France has a presidential race right.

Also our parliamentary system is massively anti-democratic (think Great Britain parliamentary elections, except with a run off system added on top) so her party is unlikely to gain a massive influence there.
