Oh yeah! I've got no problem with it at all personally! Chain rifles, dogs and flame throwers are what I do. Failing that, I ignore them. I was more saying that I find it surprising that we're having this discussion at all in my meta, rather than just bringing tools to deal with it (if it's such a problem).

I also wasn't trying to imply that I thought Joan, or Konstantinos were problematic at all. Just that the person who is complaining the loudest about TO and ODD takes lists that clearly have the intent to win, and had tools to deal with TO! (And some TO himself!)

I kind of think he is just salty that he didn't win the last tournament.

Righto chaps- I stuck my toe in the water with Infinity a while back and played a couple of games (my Haqq'islam vs Combined) and it was OK but there was such a massive list of things to learn (specifically rules, negations, etc.) that it didn't take off as much as I'd hoped. I played a small game of Gates of Antares recently and just kept thinking to myself: infinity does this better, infinity did that better, etc. so I've decided to give it another shot.

I played before N3 was released, has anything significant changed? Specifically with relation to edge-case rules and equipment? After playing alot of Kings of War, it's super hard to go back to a book-reference heavy game!

I find the more I play, the less I refer to the rulebook. We had to look up... I think two things last night? One was a corner case for whether Extremely Impetuous models could be forced to climb to get to the nearest enemy model (they are), and the other was what the exact effects of the "Stunned" state were (because it's new in Human Sphere N3). It's like anything else - the more you play, the easier it gets. 95% of everything you're going to want to do is covered in the basic rules, and once you have those down, games flow pretty quickly.

I've found that once you are done with operation icestorm it's best to only add a couple of new rules at a time. I've heard a lot of people jump to the full rules immediately and bounce right off.

The game is playable and fun without all the special rules. No sense overwhelming yourself.

Took my USARF down the road to Montreal for a tournament this weekend. I didn't finish dead last! Yay! I don't live in a very tournament heavy meta, so I don't get very many opportunities to really try and pull out all the stops. I brought two lists that I thought would be pretty good for the three missions: Engineering Deck, Safe Area, and Highly Classified. I had never played any of these missions before, and due to life getting in the way I didn't get any practice games in the few weeks leading up to the tournament! I did get a bit of painting done though (some of my grunts can be seen on the Montreal Infinity group). It was totally worth the roughly four hours of driving!

First list was designed more with Engineering deck and maybe Safe Area in mind. I had never played it before. Second list was designed for Highly Classified, but incidentally I had tried it out before in a game of supplies.

Open in Infinity Army

First up we had my 'Muricans versus NeoTerra's finest in the Engineering Deck.

I had never played against the NCA, but I had faced an Aquila Guard before and knew what his BS15 and MSV3 could do if I let him. I lost every single Lt roll and choose deployment every time. For this first game I ended up deploying second and going first. My opponent must have wanted to have the last say when it came to claiming objectives. My desperado began the game by gunning his engines and rounding a corner to get blown away by a link team with two missile launchers. This would be the theme of the day for my desperadoes. So without any smoke coverage I pushed my marauders and grunt link team up to lock down the left hand side of the table. I claimed one console with a Foxtrot FO, dropped some mines, recamoed him and put my engineer on suppression fire.

My opponent started off by trying to surprise my molotok wielding marauder with a spitfire Hexa. I was on -9 to hit, burst 2 to his burst 4 and I cranked him with a crit. :clint: So far things are looking up, and when he runs his heavy shotgun bulleteer up the exact same way I try and repeat the strategy. No such lock this time, I probably should have dodged! This is the last order that he has for the drone in that pool. I chose not to go dogged, because my classified is to paramedic/doctor one of my guys, and Dr. Fireaxe is sitting nearby. I totally forget about the Auxilia and the Auxbot that now has a clear line of advance. He runs that little bastard up the table and manages to almost take out my now exposed grunt team except for the fact that I pass every dodge! And the mine from my Foxtrot took out the little clap trap.

He starts his second attack and brings up the Aquila HMG and starts the engagement with my grunt HMG. Well, don’t you know that this is the moment that grunt was born for. I make him waste three orders and take a wound in return. He finally forces my to duck in to cover, but the grunt survives the engagement and stepped out of the way so that my grunt Sniper had a clear line of fire to the Pan O heavy trooper.

Turn two I walk Van Zant on and kill the Bulleteer. My grunt sniper tries to kill the Aquila but eats a crit. I manage to kill the Aquila in a trade for a marauder. I had now secured the left side of the board. The problem is that I didn’t have many specialists on that side – his auxbot had caught a few in its first blast! So I set up in a strong position at the doors of the objective room. If anyone tries to go in there they are getting hit with a strong cross fire for their trouble. Van Zant and some remaining rifle wielding units go into suppression fire.

Turn two is where my inexperience fighting Pan O and NCA came to the front. I was expecting that the TO marker on my right was either a hexa or some sort of cheap order sergeant like specialist. I was not expecting a Swiss Guard Hacker! He spends all his orders on this guy. Hacking a console, then running up the board and punking my grunts.
Turn three, I’m not in retreat, but I am in Loss of Lieutenant and absolutely kicking myself for not taking Executive order on RVZ! So I’ve got six orders and enough command tokens to make three of them regular. I basically make a mad dash for the Objective room. Hoping to get my Foxtrots in there and to mine it so that I might be able to stop the Swiss from getting in there. The only thing stopping me is that drat Swiss Hacker! I don’t have enough order to try and fight him, just to sprint – open the door and drop some mines! I’ve eked out smaller victories with weaker plans. But this time it was not to be. The Swiss massacred my sprinters – then calmly walked into the room, hacked the objective and stepped on a grunts neck for his secret objective. I suffer my first rear end kicking of the day 10-0 for NCA!
My opponents army was mostly painted black, but he was a great opponent. Merciless but fun to play against, which is exactly what you want at a tournament. He was also nice enough to suggest that I walk back two orders after I totally hosed up and forgot that my engineer had a glue gun and not d charges. It could have been all over turn one if that Auxbot had fried my grunts, but I was super lucky. He went on to place second I believe, and I like to think that I helped in my own small way!

Game two and we’re playing Safe Area. A new mission and a new opponent – the Tohaa!

Another army I had never faced off against. He gives me first turn and lets choose deployment. I elect to change my plan up and go with List 2 this game, thinking that all the chain rifles I’m packing will be useful against those tridents.
So once against I set up a strong left flank with the grunts taking up a very defensive position. I rushed my desperados up the board and the managed to survive! Throwing smoke and covering the LoF for the total reaction guy with his HMG. I set my Foxtrots to work mining the hell out of two closest quadrants. I then fed orders to my desperados, running them up the board to try and chain rifle the total reaction HMG, or maybe spray him with assault pistols. It didn’t really matter too much, because they were taken out by crits on the way in! Oh well!

My opponent starts his turn by walking a trident up towards my weaker right flank, but isn’t aggressive enough to try and take on my AP/Shock Minute man, or any of the other models on suppression fire. Instead he goes back to the left flank and brings up a guy with Holo echos. Now, I’ve never played against holo echos before, so my reaction is to skip the bullshit and ARO by dropping a mine when he’s close enough. Side note, throughout this game I deployed and attacked his troops with no less than 6 mines and he dodges ever single one! That’s okay because I would rather him be dodging than shooting! Mission accomplished guys.

There is a lot of positioning, but very little attacking until his turn two, when he starts coming at me with his tridents. And my grunts put in fuckin’ overtime hours here. The HMG and Sniper basically cleared the left flank for me once again.

There wasn’t too much action this game, but it really came down to the last turn. He and I are both holding two objectives and he, very cleverly, runs his TO camo token up to touch one of my consoles. I was frantically trying to discover him with a WIP 13 engineer but only succeeded as he touched the console. Looking back, I probably had another two ARO’s from the Sniper and HMG grunts, but didn’t think of it. So I revealed his token, which was an FO, as he touched the finish line. Swinging a tie game to a solid victory for him. He won I think 5 to 1. I’m not sure if his TO camo token would have counted for claiming the objective in that last turn though. So I probably should have just delayed my ARO and shot him when he revealed to contest? That would be good to know in the future, so that I’ll make the correct choices!

Really nice guy, with some nicely painted models. I also loved the way he based them – just really nice organic looking forest basing. It worked really well with his colour scheme and the Tohaa models themselves. This opponent placed near the middle of the back. He was a newer player like myself.

Game number three and it’s all on the line. I’ve got to get as many points as possible and maybe, just maybe I won’t end up at the back of the pack!

Aleph vs. Ariadna – Highly Classified

This is an opponent I had played the last time I made the trip to a tournament in Montreal. So I knew that he was going to be fielding his Vanilla Aleph, and I knew what his Asura MSV3 troop had down to me last time. I wasn’t looking forward to this!
We drew HVT: Espionage, HVT: Designation, HVT: Retroengineering, and Extreme Prejudice. His Secret objective was Sabotage and mine was Experimental Drug. Given my luck with Dr. Fireaxe I was dreading having to try and do achieve that one – it makes me so jealous of factions that have access to cubes!

So he wins the Lt roll and chooses turn order. I select the side that I think is a bit better and make him set up first. He also informs me that I get no reserve models which can only mean one thing.... he’s got a Marut! So I’d better buckle up, because I know that thing is going to be coming straight for my throat!
I set up strongly on the left flank, where he has placed his HVT. Grunts, Minute man, two foxtrots, wardriver and 112 all watching or waiting to bum rush his HVT. I’ve got my desperados on the far side of the board so that they can run up the flank and loop back. Chain rifles don’t care about ODD – but his abundant MSV2 doesn’t care about my smoke! I put my HVT in front of all of my guns/grunts and wait for him to come at me. He then places his Marut behind the infinitely high objective room and places his three post humans (all deployed as one model!).

He opens up by running a myrmidon over to try and smoke his Deva with spitfire. The spit fire shoots at my grunt sniper, but gets cancelled out on the face to face roll. My opponent forgot that 5 man links have SSL2 and can ignore smoke effects when being shot at so he drops that line of attack and goes straight for the Marut! My grunt HMG again steps up to the plate! The Marut is smoked out so that the rest of my link can’t see him, but since the HMG grunt is receiving fire he can shoot back. He puts on a clinic and actually forces a wound onto the Aleph TAG! At that point my opponent then decides to run a camo token towards my HVT. I fail to discover, but on his second order I shot him down. Although it wasn’t fast enough, because the Nagas had hacked my HVT! Scoring Aleph the first point of the game!

My impetuous models start their mad dash towards the enemy. The first desperado being blown apart by the TAG’s EXP HMG round and the second getting clipped by some dangerous terrain and dying. Typical! Meanwhile, my Devil dog team runs up the length of the board and starts harassing his post human engineer and Dactini tacbot with his chain rifle. I manage to knock the bot unconscious but, and I’m not exaggerating, the engineer makes 8 dodges. I spent easily 9 orders on those teams, everything from their order pool and the post human dodged it all!
My Wardriver hacker ran up to try and hack his HVT but was put down by a Deva with spitfire while fumbling with her iPad. I then went for the forward observe and managed to get both rolls on the first try. The ARM 0 Foxtrot also managed to tank the hit from the Deva Spitfire too! Yay! We’re now tied 1 to 1!

His turn, he opens up on the Devil Dog with his Marut and puts the good boy down.  The dancing post human engineer then runs over and slits his through for Extreme Prejudice. Then she runs all the way up my now empty right flank and places a D-charge on some terrain to grab his secret objective. Then the Marut starts going to work on my link team and blasts them down one by one. Leaving Dr. Fireaxe with plenty of unconscious bodies to choose from...

My turn rolls around and my defensive staple is in shambles. So what do I do? Cautiously walk the good doctor over to a body and doctor the poo poo out of a grunt for my classified objective! I then lock down the HVT area with everything I have left before using my remaining orders to walk my airborne ranger on the far right. The post human engineer is gone, the dakini is unconscious, and the Marut is looking the wrong way... So he gets to work taking out net rods and walks over to the Dakini to step on some robot neck. Netting me Extreme Prejudice.
It’s his last turn and he’s only got his Engineer left as a specialist. So she is making a mad dash over to my HVT when she slips catches a case of lead poisoning from an angry grunt. With that we don’t have any specialists left to achieve the remaining objectives. And call it there Tie game! 6-6!
I had about 8 orders left on my last turn, so I suppose I could of tried to kill army points in case I needed a tie breaker. But it was a good enough game and I was exhausted.

My opponents army was mostly bare metal at that point in time, but he played them very skillfully. Great game from this opponent again. Hopefully next time I’ll get the better of him! And with this game, I managed to get enough points to finish 9 out of 10! Not my best showing, but that’s okay.

My goal is to crack the top half of the next tournament I play in, but I think that may be a little lofty. There are still so many armies that I haven’t played against, and so many missions that I haven’t tried. Great game, great dudes, and the store had a much nicer selection of mini’s than my FLGS. It was friggin awesome, I had to pass several WIP tests to not walk away with an Onyx Box, Dr. Worm, Zeodrons and a Samaritan. Instead I walked away with some Aragoto’s for the JSA I’ve built, Boarding Shotgun Foxtrot, and Traktor Muls. Not sure if I’ll stick to Ariadna for the next little while. I’ve been playing them for about 6 or 7 months straight now and could go for some more high-tech stuff and legit heavy infantry. But I have a very hard time putting the camo tokens down...

ITS 2017 is starting soon, so maybe I'll play JSA and Yu Jing for the next circuit.
Time will tell!

Thanks! I learned a lot over those three games, and they were all really fun missions that I would play again.

I think managed to get the draw in the third game because the list was similar to what my usual opponent plays. Highly Classified itself I found sort of like 20x20; in that you should prepare for any sort of objective and try to get them done ASAP. My usual opponent playing Joan in a hospitaler link MO list helped me deal with the Marut. Tie it up as best you can and take away ad many orders as possible.
