Video games are great for kids who need to learn things like team work, planning, goal setting, and delaying gratification. Obviously some games are better for kid's development than others. However, I can't imagine, aside from illness or disability, where and adult spending a significant portion of their day playing video games would be at all appropriate or healthy.

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

mdm posted:- Kurt Cobain I didn't want to include who said it, since last time I did that, some guy was like "You're just trying to use the name of the person who said that to argue from authority, which makes your point rhetorical bullshit" or something. I just think that arrangement of words is true and the whole "<x> is for children" argument is silly for the reasons argued in the quote.

I don't understand how adults can play video games for like five hours straight. But then again, people probably don't understand how I could watch sports for five hours straight, so I try not to judge.

I like video games. Late at night when everyone else is sleeping, I like to fire up one of my antiquated consoles (modded PS3 and Wii) and play something when I don't feel like watching something on Hulu, Prime, or Netflix and I can't do anything productive without waking people up.

CrashCat posted:Appropriate or healthy in what way? If you just think people should get more exercise, I can't argue with that, but if you're going to sit inside and consume some sort of media during the week it's all about the same to me. I would love to go out and do fun or good things almost every day of the week but it's not feasible. A lot of adults have even busier lives and can only spend maybe an hour of free time, so who gives a poo poo what they do with it? It's barely a significant portion of their day at that point. $$$$
