What?

E:

Consumers:

May 1, 2006:
  • Off-peak $0.035 / kWh
  • Mid-peak $0.075 / kWh
  • On-peak $0.105 / kWh

May 1, 2016:
  • Off-peak $0.087 / kWh
  • Mid-peak $0.132 / kWh
  • On-peak $0.18 / kWh

Hydro rates for families have nearly doubled in the last ten years. That's going to upset a lot of people.

People are a lot less likely to tie dramatic increases in electricity to a barely remembered, half-implemented 1998 scheme that was intended to create a retail market for electricity and are a lot more likely to associate it with the current government and the current government's intention to sell off Hydro One (yes, even if the dates don't line up).

Hydro prices rose from low to average because Mike Harris was a madman and because we needed to get off dirty coal and ah I can't do this. I'm up to 27c/kwh now all in. $190 bill with $12 of mid peak and $18 of on peak, it's crazy. Last winter was easy but if this winter is cold, a lot of people will be pissed off. Poor people survive without AC, they don't do so well without heat and it's hard to only heat during off hours.

Yeah, I stay away from electricity chat because I enjoy my current avatar. Global adjustment is already factored into ToU pricing though and prices have more than doubled.

I like this chart for people who say our prices are only average. Even an Ontario elementary school teacher should be able to figure out this calculus.

We heat with wood pellets but the math worked out just to put the hot water/dryer/stove/oven on propane except that triggered my wife talking about a kitchen remodel and then the math didn't work anymore. Hot water tank is definitely our biggest culprit, wish we had a natural gas hookup.

From a couple pages back but canola is actually pretty huge out West, which I didn't realize until this China thing started making headlines. Saskatchewan exports $4.5 billion a year of canola products, and $1 billion of that goes to China. Saskatchewan's entire GDP is only like $80 billion, and it's already in a recession. If the canola rules go ahead it's gonna be really lovely for us.

People have called Kevin O'Leary Canada's Donald Trump, but why not Kellie Leitch?

quote:

Leitch asks if Ottawa should screen immigrants for 'anti-Canadian values'

Conservative leadership candidate Kellie Leitch wants to know what her supporters think about vetting would-be immigrants and refugees for anti-Canadian values.

The question comes in a survey on a number of issues which was emailed to people who signed up for news from her campaign. It sought opinions and gauged support for a variety of positions and issues, including electoral reform, corporate tax cuts and the legalization and regulation of marijuana for recreational use.

The question reads: "Should the Canadian government screen potential immigrants for anti-Canadian values as part of its normal screening for refugees and landed immigrants?"

Some of the other questions are fairly straightforward, such as those asking whether the federal government should retain or eliminate the supply management system for farm products such as eggs and dairy, summarizing the common arguments for and against.

Some are more provocative, such as the one about screening immigrants.

U.S. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has called for would-be immigrants to undergo what he called "extreme vetting" to determine their stance on things like religious freedom, gender equality and LGBTQ rights.

The Leitch survey does not define anti-Canadian values, or otherwise declare where the candidate stands on the issue.

Neither did her campaign manager Nick Kouvalis, who said Thursday he would not comment on the substance of the survey.

Kouvalis did say more than 8,000 people had responded since it was sent out Tuesday and that it was based on subjects Leitch had been hearing about from Conservatives during her travels across Canada since launching her leadership bid this spring.

During the 2015 federal election campaign, Leitch helped promote a controversial promise to open a tip line for so-called barbaric cultural practices meant to help the RCMP enforce a law aimed at cracking down on forced marriages and keeping polygamists out of Canada.

Not long after she began her Conservative leadership campaign, Leitch became emotional during an interview with Power & Politics on CBC News Network as she expressed regret for that position.

Looks like the lessons of the last election are completely lost on her.

In the larger sense, Canada joining the AIIB doesn't matter that much because it still lacks the United States and Japan, the world's largest and third largest economies respectively, meaning the bank is going to be hamstrung for the foreseeable future. It does however mean that China gets to claim Canada's head for its trophy wall because it contributes to the "China rising and displacing America" narrative.
