It was surreal but I didn't even feel it when it happened, it was just such a relief to be done with the pushing. Like, the doctor is all "hey look down" and there's this loving BABY sticking half-out of me, screaming and waving her arms around (arm came through with the head, hence the tearing). Worst part is recovery for sure but it's really not as bad as it sounds, I'm only taking Motrin. And I didn't want to start a 529 plan before she was born for fear I'd jinx something, so I gotta get on that now. aw yeah.

Yeah hecka congrats and thanks for sharing. Babies, imo, are a significant macro advantage even though their initial cost is high.

I mean, they're kind of like the worst pets ever but they're also other people you get to help and know and other people are good and cool so it's kind of a hard thing to make a financial judgement about. Travel is cool because it's a good life experience, right? Well, so is babbie. You just can't really cancel your kids if things change so that kind of sucks.

Living in socialist hell on earth, we pay $10 per day at the hospital for the wife (food and bed included), and an outrageous $20 per night for me (no food included!). And it is not even deductible!!

Buy your diapers on amazon subscribe and save. Buy formula (if you need it) at Costco. Wipes at Costco are the best bargain. Enjoy. And if you ever feel sleep deprived, remember, at least it's not twins.

I got a survey from the Department of Transportation the other day. There was five bucks in it, and they said they were going to send me a check for 20 bucks if I track my travel for a day and log how/when I traveled. I love getting that kind of crap. Poor in spirit! But so far all of the baby spending has been pretty well covered from royalties I keep getting from my old gay cowboy erotica. Plus now that I hit my deductible, I'm going to get free doctor visits for the rest of the year! What should I go in for? I'm already planning on getting some moles removed and going in for some free therapy visits. Maybe blood testing for cholesterol?

My boss was wondering how the new overtime rules that go into effect for salaried employees was going to effect the people who are in management (including me). He suggested giving everyone raises to over the new threshold, and they treated him like he was an idiot for even suggesting that. I work over 40 hours every week, and am just barely below the threshold for being exempt, so it looks like I'll be racking up some sweet overtime hours soon. What's even better is that I'm helping to open up a new location for the company, and that will be pretty soon after the new overtime rules go into effect, and I'll probably be working 60-70 hour weeks to complete my normal duties on top of opening this new location. So instead of giving me a $2500/yr raise, they're going to make me hourly at ~$21.50/hr and then let me rack up like 40-60 hours of >$30/hr overtime every pay period.

Company A just emailed me saying that they've decided to extend me X position. I'm waiting on two other job applications: one of them I'm pretty far along (phone interview + test), the other not so much (just a test). I'll be on the phone with Company A in a few hours' time, when I expect they'll describe the terms of contract. I'm keen to wait on the results of the other job applications, so I'll ask for a week of time to wait. What do I say if Company A asks me if I have other job offers on the table? And if I do want to negotiate the salary, should I be doing it over this very phone call or should I email/call them later?

# ? Oct 7, 2016 05:45 |

Absolutely reveal you're considering other companies. If they ask for a salary tell them you're considering offers in (highball) pay range. Do not lowball yourself. Don't let them know who else you're considering or when you'll hear back from them. Negotiate with them in earnest and let them know that you're willing to be hired once an acceptable offer is made (and NOT "in a few weeks when I've heard back from other place"). The correct time to present them with a deadline is when you're making final considerations and are ready to decide. Even if you're willing to work for the company that you're talking to, it doesn't hurt to give them one more chance to raise your salary.

Remember that you're dealing with humans in these situations, and humans can get competitive. When you tell them you have other offers, their minds will race. "That rear end in a top hat Johnson over at Initech must want this guy. Well I'll be damned if they're getting him! Send him a better offer." Use this to your advantage.

That negotiation thread is probably the most positive one on SA, reading those stories where some 23 year old learns the basics and gets 30% more salary out of lovely megacorp xyz makes me happier than anything.

Cross posting from the AI/BFC thread... Im currently researching a car to buy for my growing family, but... I currently have a 2005 Prius with 100k miles. It's an awesome car, but we live in the city and won't really need two cars. I will likely be moving away from the city and will need a 2nd car in about a year. Should I trade this thing in or hold on to it, park it on the street, pay insurance for it, and drive it maybe once a month? The logical side says "Trade it in, and buy another one in a year. You can find the same car for $500 less and save the $500 in insurance you would waste". The other side says "You know the history of this car, you know its a great car, it's the worth $1,000 to not have to go through the car buying process and uncertainty of trying to find a reliable and affordable car in a year". Someone keep me sane.

I Love Topanga posted:Cross posting from the AI/BFC thread... Why pay insurance on it? If you're not going to be driving it, just do a cheeky loop around the block every month or so. Or if you're really concerned, call up your insurance company and see what kind of bare-bones policies they offer (or shop around with other providers). If the insurance is because you're concerned about theft having it parked on the street, consider removing some small-but-essential part to disable the car while it's sitting. Alternatively, if you have a friend/co-worker/family member you can trust, consider loaning it to them. This could end badly though. Whatever money you get on the trade in will be half what you will pay when you go to buy one again.
