its kind of a cliche to call a lot of internet communities hugboxes, but thats just what they are by design. a lot of the big ones are closed ecosystems like facebook, and tumbler to a lesser degree. you dont see what you dont want to. the exception to this is twitter, which is why its constantly the engine of outrage for every single drat thing in the world: its not a closed system.

its not hard to see how people can whip themselves into a dipshit frenzy when all they read is constant reinforcement of their ideas. as far as SA is concerned, i dont know why its always been leftish, thats a mystery to me. but for a number of years this stance was absolutely mod sanctioned no matter what idiots like ralp might claim

Wearing rainbow poo poo with horses on it was the new edgy black trench coats for a certain generation and it was pathetically hilarious. At least the trench coat edge lords would go to concerts and gently caress instead of wallow in piss-stained ball pits at failed conventions.

This is probably right but for some reason that's how I remember the situation. Like, it was a gay show for babies and people were ironically saying they liked it like barney the purple dinosaur or something to troll for responses, and when other people saw the outrage those people were getting they too attached themselves to it to get the same kind of attention but they forgot the ironic part and just devoted their lives to MLP.

Maybe it's just whatever shrieking, shriveled remains of my humanity are actually left deep down inside still refusing to believe that bronies were a natural, unironic thing that just happened.

Bronies, furries, and even a lot of the social justice crew are just evidence of the coddling of certain generations. The only thing better than a dumb, redneck population is an infantilized, terrified one because the people who want to gently caress plush horses and post about being a xir on Tumblr are never going to take up arms or riot in the streets. They'll just cheer on the black people who do so from the comfort of their adult nurseries and then show up later on to utterly destroy any sort of progress with their constant semantic bickering and peacocking.

the problem i think is that everyone has wildly different opinions about what to do because getting a discussion forum with thousands of users and millions of threads into a state of balance isn't something anyone on earth can be depended on to do reliably. it seems easy to all of us so we all have our little thing we feel should be done, but really that's just wishful thinking and i think lowtax knows that and so he's not looking for goons opinions from threads like this. and also i don't think he gives a gently caress if any of us wish him well, because i wouldn't if i was him. it's really hilarious to see people posting directly to lowtax in a serious way, as if he cares what some person who posts in pyf thinks lol

You're mistaking things being a sign of the times with the media pushing a narrative from the top down. The country in general isn't as tolerant or offended as the media and a small sect of their followers would have you believe.

even if that were true, would that still change the fact that in a few years that's only going to be a more popular way of thinking, not less?

in any case it's hardly an attack on all humor, doing something like calling jenner a filthy tranny has got to be low no hanging fruit anyway. as far as hills to die on, I'd not pick that one.

The media glomming onto something doesn't make it inevitable, and just because you're a prude and don't find something funny, it doesn't mean everyone else should be shamed or forced to adhere to your viewpoint. Opening up humor to this kind of control inevitably just results in creating more and more things you aren't allowed to joke about EVER. The filthy tranny joke is the extreme example used to make sure nobody ever makes any jokes even remotely in that area at all. We've tried doing things this way, and it's obvious that once you open the door for the complainers and prudes to declare things not funny and out of bounds it quickly becomes a race for every self-styled online moralizer to leave their mark by pushing the envelope of what is forbidden to further and further ridiculous extremes. The communities that form around these values are inherently toxic and constantly engaging in internal witch hunts to determine ideological purity for an ever-shifting set of values nobody is even really sure of. It's a giant cult and basically either everything is fine to make fun of or nothing is, and then the joke is judged on whether or not it's funny afterwards, not whether or not someone should be allowed to make it. I agree simply calling someone a tranny isn't usually funny, but that doesn't mean it should be banned completely.

Try this situation

Trans Person: "I just lost some weight"
Me: "How much does a dick weigh anyway?"

you could follow up my terrible joke, which has no personal bias, with something like "The carrying capacity of your moms rear end in a top hat" or something, or just lecture everyone on the moral implications of jokes against (subset of society) and pick the worst, most terrible hypothetical situations you can to backwards justify your outrage because I dared make a bad joke about something while THERE IS LITERAL MURDER, BEATINGS, HARRASSMENT etc or whatever.

I can joke about starvation, cigarette smoker deaths, fat people that die early or any number of topics and probably have at least some chance due to the law of averages to say something funny at some point, but what has nothing to do with that is the moral and societal implications of those topics. We are in an environment 100% based around joke making and humor and not sitting in a women's shelter or gay rights rally calling people faggots ironically or making jokes about battered women.

I think the MLP crowd probably has a very large crossover with the autistic furry and/or sonic fandoms, I don't really buy that it was something people accidentally jumpstarted by pretending to be fans of something dumb given the insanity of those other groups.

Smythe my man, you should really pay attention to what's going on w/regards to media. The internet is being consolidated into the wheelhouses of a few organizations and they aren't the "free information" types. It's not the era of free info any more, it's the era of heavily curated info fed to you by specific interests. It took them a while and there are different faces in charge, but big media like facebook and google have consolidated most of the internet under their hold and control the majority of what people see. That's actually one of the things that makes SA so fantastic. It's very "old internet" instead of the new, heavily curated and controlled stuff.

can't that just be a natural consequence though instead of some kind of conspiracy?

I can see the subject of what you are saying being true, like the type of information that is most consumed is heavily curated and not free at all which is controlled by special interests, but it's just a result of more people using the internet and since most people are stupid they gravitate toward the lowest common denominator of information outlets.

Like if a co-worker comes to me and goes "SEE?! Obama is a muslim!" and links me to an article "Top Ten Reasons why Obama is a Muslim" it's both a stupid message, the person reading it is too stupid to discriminate bad information from good, but I don't expect that the article is trying to control a narrative (or establishes a worldwide trend of doing so) and instead is just an idiot reading lovely information, of which there is too much of lately.

Not for any other reason. If a topic makes people too uncomfortable to laugh, you picked a poo poo topic just the same as if you picked something too obscure for anyone to get. Try something else because the freedom to use any material you want isn't the issue. When most working comedians complain about the ess jay double us they complain about the unnecessary career ruining twitter gangpiles wrecking their lives, unnecessary because a comedian is already judged by the reaction they pull from a crowd. It's a given that they'll switch to new material when they can't get laughs and if they cannot adapt they become unemployable. Twitter gangpiles are redundant on top of being hasty and unforgiving. It would make sense if a website also found ways to adapt just the same.
