For one, trucks are expensive. The average fleet age is like 10-15 years. Even if it doubled the rate of sales you're still talking about 10-15 years.

Two, drivers often do more than just drive. Often times they will help load or unload. My father has a retirement job "driving" for a farm equipment dealership. A large part of what he does is picking up equipment for repair or sometimes even repairing some of the stuff on the spot.

The most likely scenario is that we will see a gradual phase out of driving/trucking jobs over decades, not a cataclysmic mass lay off of tens of millions of people.

Like sure, it doesn't seem short in that sense, I just mean that if you look at boomers now, they still live in their minds that you can still pay for school with a part time job and so on; and yet our generation will see that the next generation will have it just as bad as we do now in terms of how automation squeezes us; my concern is just how bad will it get before serious political will is mustered to ease the transition.

Oh yeah, we're talking about truck driving and not personal driving. For a personal driver, I still think the responsibility to monitor auto driving systems as well as driving by themselves is too much to ask for the current level of training they get.

For commercial drivers that level of training should be no problem. It's their job, after all.

RBG retires, Breyer retires, Kennedy retires, Thomas retires, Hillary appoints five liberal Supreme Court justices, and liberals enjoy a 7-2 majority on the Supreme Court for the next two decades. Republicans retake the Senate in 2018 but the damage is already done.

This is assuming that the GOP doesn't start mass confirming Obama's picks because they hate him less than they hate Clinton and would fear a Democratic Senate would mean nothing but ultra-liberal picks.

Mainly due to the increased racial diversity in the group.

https://morningconsult.com/2016/07/21/poll-millennials-go-clinton-trump-cant-buy-older-minority-vote/

Clinton only has a 6 point spread across generations with white folk. Trump only has a 12 point spread.

To summarize the article: Trump isn't and old people thing. He is a white people thing. I would bet that if you could get a combination of Race and Age breakdown Trump's support would be almost stable.

I'm not surprised.

I feel kind of want to feel bad for white people. There's nothing about "being a white person" that makes you an rear end in a top hat. Our ancestors have just forced us into a society that was built and designed to foster a notion of superiority among white straight dudes in order to justify why a handful of them had all the money and power.

Oh well.

Usually the two who do it are an 83 year old and an 89 year old. One served in Korea and the other WWII. A third will chime in on rare occasions (also a vet), but their probably the most openly racist one of the bunch (it's two different people, honestly, and both are openly racist as all hell).

Obama has grown a lot since 2008. We've all watched it. He even personally admits that Hillary is better prepared for the Oval Office than he was when he stepped up.

It's a drat shame he didn't get to learn these things as a cabinet member. He's been a good president but he hasn't been the best president he is capable of being. He was inexperienced. Hillary had been playing hardball on the hill since the 90's.

She'd also been cultivating a lot of bipartisan connections in the senate. So I don't think Hillary is going to be as good as she could have been in 2008. A lot of the GOP senators she'd been forging collegial working relationships with are retired now. She'll still be great. But not as good as she could have been.

But yeah, pointing out that Obama wasn't ready was an absolutely legitimate criticism. It would be awesome if he knew everything he knows now and was starting his first term in November. But a couple years playing wallflower in the senate was insufficient preparation.
