Deadhouse Cakes.

Also I just got done re-reading the first part of House of Chains. This series is 100% better on a read through since I actually have some clue who the players are and where everyone fits in the timeline.

I didn't quite understand the background for the Teblor though. Their history is told through Karsa's point of view as he and his two friends stumble upon (among other things) the writing in the cave, the forkrul assail, and the bone steps / cleave in the cliffs, and various snippets from the seven t'lan imass gods. Also there was mention of Icarium, possibly his parents maybe? Since he's half Toblakai maybe he was saving his mother's tribe or something? And maybe the Jaghut hiding above the tribes was Gothos?.. I couldn't quite piece together what happened, though. Anyone have a concise statement?

Nah, Bakker is good.
In the fantasy genre he is one of the more unique writers.
I just reread PoN and it is on the same level as Malazan in terms of world building.
I am really looking forward to The Great Ordeal when it is finally released in my country.

Teblor origin the Teblor are Toblakai who got their blood watered down with other species. To get their awesome back Icarium exiled them in a remote place to purify their blood. And he gave them a tradition of raiding other tribes and raping to avoid top much inbreeding

Kruppe is awesome.

Negative nitpicking:

Why are there both legions and armies? I was hoping to get away further away from Rome than that.

Warrens just feel like a minor element bolted on to an otherwise bog standard 'wizard throws a fire ball and needs a bit of a lie-down'. Yes, it's where they get all their energy from and they can use it to travel, but it doesn't result in any practical differences.

yeah, it kind of takes until later in the series before it becomes anything more than that, though Memories of Ice delves into it quite a bit.

eh... maybe I was? It was pretty funny the way everyone seemed to get so mad when I said negative stuff I couldn't help myself.

I probably was a little too hasty with complaining about legions, as I suppose it's not impossible for armies to made out of legions.

And by that I mean I looked it up in the wiki, and as it turns, I was wrong. The author didn't do what I thought he did and started calling armies legions less then halfway through the first book of his ten book series.

Maybe I was a little too cynical going into this.

House of Chains is the most fun book so far. Consistently entertaining. I was glad that it's a little less ponderous and emotional than DG and MoI could be. That stuff can be absorbing and sometimes poignant, but also plodding and sappy, and I really needed a break from it. Not that the three-way hug didn't touch my heart. I'm too sleepy to name the thousand little things I loved about this book. Karsa rules Bidithal drools.

Continuing on HoC: It's such a solid all-rounder, with plenty of comedy, drama and tragedy. Its big moment near the end isn't as good as DG's, but Felisin is one of my favourite characters and her death is pitiable, especially how she raises her arms before Tavore kills her and it's implied it was a kind of feeble attempt to embrace her. Tavore's on a level with Anomander Rake, Laseen or Shadowthrone in that she's an ephemeral figure I'm eager to know more about.

Aside from Karsa's opening section, this feels like it has the same structure as GotM, with events building and converging at the same place near the end. It's similar too in that the climax reveals a lot while leaving many dangling threads for later. It's both a conclusion to DG and an introduction to later books.

The crisscross of motives revealed and unrevealed is daunting. By the time poo poo hit the fan in Raraku I barely understood what anyone was doing and just enjoyed the ride. I had no idea the "trespassers" the Liosan sought were the Silanda soldiers, for instance. I like how the impending battle is a narrative feint and instead we get a night of pure chaos. The meet-ups and near brushes between different characters are so cool.

I'm glad Cotillion gets fleshed out here. An intriguing character. The gods have previously seemed petulant and a little ridiculous; but I see now that that's not their characterisation but simply how they appear at a remove. But they are a bit ridiculous in GotM.

I absolutely loved "We are relieved." "You should be."

I also loved "I think we should get out of here." "A brilliant plan." "Thanks, I just thought of it."

Greyfrog is funny, the Pusks are funny. Did Mass Effect steal Greyfrog's speech pattern? Those elephant aliens do the same thing, announcing the emotion driving what they're about to say.

Bidithal's fate: he's a heartless monster, but eternal demon rape is a bit harsh.

So do the Tiste Edur have really long lifespans like the Tiste Andii, meaning the events in Midnight Tides are taking place long before Gardens of the Moon?

Based on the Dramatis Personae this novel is virtually self-contained? And I thought the start to HoC was ambitious.

I really need to memorize the warrens. Omtose Phellack and Kurald Emulhran (sp?) are the only ones I can identify as Jaghut/ice and Shadow respectively.

The Ninth Layer
Jun 20, 2007

Midnight Tides takes place around the same time as the GOTM prologue.

I don't think Edur life spans are ever spelled out, but they seem to have life spans closer to humans than to the Andii. Perhaps they live longer than humans but since they live in isolation we never really get the comparison.

Oh I'm definitely cool with that. Even if it was consistent I wouldn't be patient enough to bother piecing together all the inconsistencies in my understanding.

I had a moment today that drove me to this thread. I was having a bit of a clear out of the attic and found my bag of Malazan books. When I tried to take them down the steps I dropped the bag. It was so heavy and loud that the neighbors checked to make sure we were okay. I thought for a moment about re-reading them, but the fact that they apparently weigh as much as a body made me re-think that option.

I'm up in the air about whether I'll include the ICE books in my readthrough. Erikson's prose and variety of styles are a big drawing card for me, and people's biggest criticism of ICE is his prose. The Wikipedia page suggests the ICE books are essential to the whole but the OP suggests they're not. I've nearly finished Midnight Tides which would mean Night of Knives is next canonically. I might try it because it's short and dump ICE if I don't care for it.

Shimmer is the main POV Crimson Guard protagonist in ICEs series. I basically only remember she has a whipsword and have sex with Iron Bars (including the "remark")

The ICE crimson guard books are a worthwhile addition to the malazan universe but the overarching story meanders painfully. The closure in assail is solid but he beats you around the head with it throughout the whole book. I can't remember many standout moments, whereas I can still remember some Erikson scenes I read 5 years ago.

Is the new dancer book a standalone or part of a new series?
