Phil's back!

Phil Mushnick posted:

During the Trayvon Martin killing calamity in Florida, NBA players wore hoodies to symbolize the stereotyping that inspired Martin’s assailant, George Zimmerman.

Yet in the months before and after that NBA protest, crimes commonly were committed — and still are — by those who tried to obscure their identities beneath hoodies.

Hey remember when Phil Mushnick wrote the most racist sports article ever about Jay-Z buying into the Nets? Good times. You know, when people like Mushnick (he's not the only "Think of the Children!" type in media, sadly) moralize as often as he does, I don't think "What a noble guy", I think "Jesus, the skeletons in his closet must be really substantial".

He rewrote that article for Chance the Rapper and the White Sox. Chance the Rapper is the rapper I show to my mom when I'm talking about what music I'm into these days.

Wasn't Mushnick the guy who wrote a blistering editorial about the ambulance glitch in Madden '92, saying that it was promoting violence to kids? I think EGM reprinted it in full, once.

I don't listen to him all the time so maybe I'm off here, but there are alot of segments where he just talks back to venomous stuff in his mentions. He can be very entertaining and thoughtful but there are times it feels like he's doing a show for twitter and it can really bring the show down.

They don't take calls so Twitter is how they sometimes interact with the listeners

It also turned out to be a way to mess with listeners who were waiting by their radios and keyboards to get outraged.

I completely agree that it brings down the show at times. It's a blessing and a curse of the show that they generally try to create trash fires and give attention to their biggest shithead listeners. As a result, a more thoughtful point that Dan hit while lighting up Stugotz over something - that much of online outrage is asking others to take actions and risks that you won't - got lost in the noise.

SVP spitting hot fire at FS1

Awful Announcing posted:

When asked about FS1 and former ESPN wunderkind Jamie Horowitz, Van Pelt wasn’t afraid to opine:

“Jamie Horowitz is a guy that’s a friend, and every article he’s quoted in he mentions ‘SportsCenter’s’ failing ratings. And not one says, ‘Well how about [the Cowherd-Whitlock team-up] “Speak for Yourself,” which gets 50,000 people.’ We don’t have a single show that rates that badly. He gets constantly quoted talking about our ratings, and that is an astonishing thing that continues to happen. … At some point, if you’re going to talk [junk] about our ratings, you should be held accountable for yours. They’re not close. And by not close, I mean it’s like Washington to Los Angeles, not Washington to Baltimore. You’re a long, long, long, long flight away.

And Van Pelt wasn’t done bringing up ESPN’s ratings as compared to FS1:

“I’m competitive. I’m professionally competitive,” Van Pelt continued. “There’s not one person involved in this discussion that I’m not friendly with. Skip Bayless, I don’t know [him]. But Colin, I’m friendly with. [Jason] Whitlock, I’m friendly with. The higher-ups at Fox, I’m friendly with. There’s no anger in any of this, I’m just professionally competitive. And so I can say, ‘Wait, if you’re going to keep saying that,’ then I’m going to say, ‘What are your ratings?’ I saw one day there was 28,000 people watching that show. … That’s the attendance of a Cincinnati Reds game. That’s your audience. ‘SportsCenter,’ on its worst day, gets 300,000 people. But we’re failing. We’re just failing away over here.”

The whole thing is a pretty good read. SVP is bullish as hell on ESPN, which i'm sure more than part of is a company line thing, but these are some good shots.
