Okay, I'm testing the waters here. Are people willing to entertain the idea that Steven's development is stunted because he moved in with the Gems?

I couldn't help myself, I looked at the leaked screenshots. I am kinda wishing this Rose-like human sticks around and becomes what Vidalia was for Amethyst, someone she can kind of talk to and hang out with that isn't the main group. Hell, maybe even having a new big woman in her life can help her come to terms with Rose being gone! I also like how they finally got to use the Bad Pearl design, like they've been teasing for ages

I suspected it's an opinion people would accept, but I don't recall it being explicitly brought up before. Especially not with supporting evidence. Long story short: The Gems and Greg are failing as parents in ways that are so negligent if he were a regular human child he'd been taken away by child services years ago. Child endangerment, educational neglect, emotional neglect. Even if he was physically immortal (he isn't) he'd still wind up with a lot of issues. I love the show, the Gem's love Steven, but for him to continue to grow he's going to have to keep pushing back at his caretakers and it'll surprise them and it'll probably surprise a lot of fans. By the way, don't start cataloging the evidence of the neglect and the consequences because it gets depressing fast.

The lesson is that people need to socialise with their peers while they're growing up. It's notable that Steven's emotional growth has occurred since he got a regular human friend (Connie) and made more friends within the community (the Cool Kids).

he's been living "in his mothers shadow" ever since he moved in with the gems. The three of them have some issues stemming from or because of Rose and those issues are bound to affect their ability to raise a child, assuming of course that they really knew how to raise a child in the first place, something I assume has been a learning experience for them as well. None of this constitutes actual child abuse.

I'm rewatching the series from the beginning and man it really was different at first. The Gems were kind of jerks to Steven more often. Steven was also stupid it seems. It really was changed quickly it seems. Pearl was definitely the most "Mom" to Steven from the beginning of the series though. Bird Mom is great. EDIT: Frybo was loving horrifying

Favorite human here: I'd actually probably dig hanging with Greg at times. Re-watching has allowed me to catch interesting foreshadowing now that I know the series better. Such as Steven wanting to turn into a Huge Lion in the Cat Fingers episode. Lol I forgot how weird and funny the Cat Fingers episode is. I started watching the series when it first aired and it didn't grab me either. I started again this summer and I have to admit that the episode that made me a believer was Tiger Millionaire. I think I'm probably going to have to disappoint you and probably others and say that Garnet was the best mom. Pearl was better at mother-ing. Amethyst wasn't really in the running because she's more like a cool older sister. Those are my conclusions after analyzing the core main characters of the TV show Steven Universe to determine the best mom. Also I think I'm caught up now. This is a really entertaining and good show. I don't think I can go apeshit over it the way a lot of yall do but it was a lot of fun and I'll keep watching it. I'll answer any other questions because uh everyone seems to want to ask me them so go for it. I still think I was right about the onion kid and he's going to turn out to be super evil.

If I had just stumbled into SU from the start I probably wouldn't have kept with it, the first set of episodes really didn't grab me that much until Tiger Millionaire/Bubble Buddies/So Many Birthdays and I didn't start to love it until Steven the Sword Fighter, specifically when Pearl gets shanked to gently caress and back. Fortunately I was basically being sat down by a friend who marathoned like 35 episodes in a row with me so I didn't have much choice to quit it. On the other hand I started watching Gravity Falls on my own accord and still haven't gone back to pick up after the first episode because I wasn't really feeling it and didn't have someone else controlling the screen to make me watch more.
