Hence, "only Nixon could go to China."

It's a shame Eisenhower decided to throw in with the Republicans. He was offered political support by Truman twice to run as a Democrat but declined because of philosophical differences with the Democrats at the time. I'm willing to wager that a lot of the reputation the Republicans were able to spin as "the party that stands up to Communism" was because they got Ike to be the face of their party in the '50s.

They gave a poo poo about communism and socialism. The soviet union fell in 1991 and Putin is president rather than General Secretary of the Communist Party. He's also corrupt as gently caress and likes to wave his dick around. These are things that have traditionally been popular with the American right wing dating back like a century.

It all makes perfect sense to me.

To be fair, there is a little more to that beyond mere aesthetics, although not much. The Soviet system was nominally based on a maximalist ideology, one that was supposed to upend the existing order of all other countries and start a worldwide revolution. It was, at its very core, a revisionist state. Putin's government, on the other hand, is pretty non-ideological (or, if you like, ideologically inconsistent), beyond "yay Russian chauvinism!" Geopolitically, it's more concerned with shoring up Russia's diminishing status as a Great Power. It's a little revisionist, but not much. So it's harder for Americans to view it as a threat or an evil empire.

Eisenhower was the last somewhat decent Republican president, and shitheels like Rich Lowry over at National Review basically have a job as "the adult Republicans in the room" because of caché created for them by Eisenhower.

Well, I'm sorry about that.

e: I often feel as though my criticisms of Clinton are misattributed to me being a Bernie Bro, which I'm not. I like Hillary Clinton overall. I think she's going to be a decent president. I think she, like every other candidate, has made mistakes with her campaign, and I hope she fixes them so that she maximizes her returns in November. I want her to have as big of a Democratic majority in Congress as possible, so she can get good poo poo done. I don't think that the zoux strategy of coasting into November and not being critical of her positions that are less-than-perfect will lead to a maximum turnout for her. If there's any lesson I've learned from the Obama presidency, it's that progressives need to keep putting pressure on presidents, even ones they like, if they want to get tangible policy results.

That said he was a douche-y racist who stood up for black people with the US Military in the face of angry Southerner assholes and who we owe the interstate highway system existing to. I don't think Eisenhower is an incredible president, but by virtue of most presidents completely sucking he fairly easily makes the top ten, at least for the foreseeable future.

Yeah they don't seem to understand that a Trump win in 2016 means they will spend 2020 praising Trump and his upcoming reelection because anyone who reported negatively on him during his first term will at best be sued in to oblivion and at worst jailed/killed for violating the Trump Hurt Feelings Act of 2017.

Trying to pretend that Hillary would also have let out a string of verbal diarrhea if someone wasn't feeding her coherent policy lines via an earpiece, therefore Trump and Hillary are both morons but at least Trump wallows in his stupidity rather than pretending to be smart and healthy, therefore vote Trump.

Not cause of the paranoid delusions that is quite common among conservatives, but rather the unintentional admission that Hillary did better than their hero.

Broadcast resolution was about that, depending, yeah. It was the rough equivalent of 640x480, but not formatted neatly like a computer monitor or modern televisions are, and the signal could get further degraded depending on what connector you were using (and given that most televisions were RF until the 80s, whoof) as well as what equipment you were using to capture the screens and video with (and consumer VHS was rather low-quality).

640x480 is very generous. It's closer to 480x360 once you take into account interlacing. It actually doesn't look half bad in motion, but framegrabs will always look like poo poo due to the need to average 2 "frames" worth of fields. On a decent CRT from a Betamax or SVHS source that video probably looks pretty alright, but we don't use those anymore.

So yeah, the reason old non-HD video looks like poo poo is because interlaced video (except for 1080i) doesn't really exist anymore, and so all the old news footage and stuff has had to be deinterlaced in the process of putting it up on YouTube. Deinterlacing is a finicky art and results can look great or like total rear end depending on the type of content and the algorithm used.

It didn't really look that lovely at the time, and people don't know dick about video so they're not really taking the care to do the capturing properly when putting poo poo up on YouTube.
