Looks like a lot of other "maybe felonious" AR-15s I see at the range. drat short barrel and a VFG, it counts as a pistol because that "stock" isn't really one, or is it now? As soon as you shoulder it like a stock, it becomes a stock in the eyes of the law and therefore makes it a short-barreled rifle rather than a pistol. He's hosed either way unless he registered that thing as something. A vertical foregrip on a pistol makes it Any Other Weapon, while a stock makes it a Short-Barreled Rifle. He's dancing on both sides of the "federal felony unless registered and used in a specific manner" line.
