That's the part that was really making me mad at vidya games. I'm used to the usual crap with an NPC spawning, whipping around behind you then yanking you back in time over and over until you land or leave the system. It's super annoying and just a time tax on travel, but whatever. The thing I haven't experienced before was the teleport/plasma combo with a mass lock out to the max range of 5E sensors. I'm guessing they were also the magic cargo-spawned ones as well, possibly from carrying Modular Terminals, since reloading the game or jumping out/in didn't clear them.

Some of the NPC-problems are routed in Frontier's weird balance: If you're an Elite-trader, for example, Frontier assumes you are also an incredible badass and can take down Elite Pythons and Anacondas with your dinky space freighter.

For some irritating reason you get high-ranked large ships like FDLs even with a smaller ship. That's how my Asp died multiple times during my grind-engineers-and-collect-space-loot stage of preparing for my expedition to the other side of the galaxy. In two cases I died so fast I couldn't even look up what was attacking me!

Edit:

This poo poo is also what made me stop using a Federal Dropship as a smuggler vessel: The game looked at how much the FDS costs and then spawned ships far beyond my skill level and far beyond what my sad little tub could take. Also the buff to missiles, while nice, really did nothing good to armor-ships. :sigh:

Something I forgot to ask: Did Frontier mention if you can dock up at stations with fighters?

Because that would be kind of neat: While it wouldn't allow your fat tub to trade with outposts, you could dump exploration data and take/turn in missions. Sounds like it could be useful.

That would probably explain it. Since I've been out here last I've gained a few trader ranks. Getting interdicted by FDLs and Anacondas to begin with can be harsh but with the teleportation drives they have it's pretty much instant shields down followed by switching to Task Manager. I'll see if anyone out in this end of space carries mines I guess. If that doesn't work I'll macro killing the program or something.

God, just this would be a massive quality-of-life-thing that would add tons of playability to the game.

Honorable mention should also go to:

  • Repair/shield boost limpets for support craft. (repair/shield boost ships in wing with a ammo-based system for increased but not infinite longevity in combat/escort/exploration).

  • Revamping cargo space for all ships to make pure trading ships the best choice for trading.

  • Revamping ship roles so that big ships like the Anaconda/Cutter/Corvette have an actual purpose as support/heavy hitters/corvettes, cruisers or motherships.

  • Player bases to build/upgrade to give a sense of permanence and investment in the game.

  • Revamping in-system FTL so that it's not a boring dumb slog through nothingness and stupid nonsensical lines, but a real distinction between normal flight and FTL flight.

  • Shutting down the brown sea forums permanently.

One thing I noticed: Sometimes NPCs wait for you do something first, giving you time to orient your ship and spool up your FSD. If you do that first and only then boost away and vomit mines, chances are you'll make it. Just make straight ahead and only use lateral thrusters to evade, so you don't turn away from your jump target.

By the way, make sure the joystick-buttons you've assigned to lateral thrusters actually work. I say this for really no particular reason

It's yet another day in the wasteland.

I haven't seen any teleporting insta-shield-destroying ships, but I have come across a fair amount of (in particular) Anacondas that are simply immune to death. They'll happily fly into my mines as good interceptors should, and they'll lose their shields and have explosions show up on the little target hologram…

…but at 15–17% hull, they'll just say “nope” and not take damage any more no matter what. Their shields will regenerate (and then instantly go down again as they drive into more mines) but the hull will simply not budge. I've read that some of them will start deploying point defences once they get low on health, but that doesn't seem to be the case here sine they do take damage (just not to hull) and since the mines are obviously hitting. So I still wonder what's up with those ships.

The only thing i can imagine is the tip of the anaconda housing sub-targets that are
a) already destroyed by mines and
b) do not allow any blowthough damage
so that all your mine-damage goes into compartments that cannot be damaged further.
I dont know breach damage of mines, but actually it should be quite good, so its maybe a matter of the position and the vector of the breach?

e: like, if you target shield gen with lasers you can basically shoot that location 30 minutes without killing him off since lasers dont have noteworthy AP and the "dead" generator blocks damage from going somwhere with actual hitpoints.

If you want to see it in glorious action, look to Star Citizen and the greatness that's coming from that. Then take some time to learn what happens in actual game development and see how bad E:D is. Star Citizen already has 200x the content and immersion of E:D.

Eh, Diablo -1 was far better and didn't need procgen, instead the devs handcrafted every single one of the 256 levels. But I've heard Star Citizen will do both handcrafting and procedural generation, which means if they can pull this off, Star Citizen will be at least 200000x better than E:D.

Diamondback Scout is what you want.

Yes it costs slightly more but it's a space apache gunship with amazing hardpoint locations, great pitch rate and jump range.

Tycoon, but that seems to be high enough to spawn some heavily armed FDLs. The killer isn't the weapons, because weapons always hurt - it's the magic catchup that seems to be triggered by you running. That same magic works in your favor with mines as they engage their NPC Drives into an explosive trail. My shields are still gone, and one time I got shot through my shields and had my generator destroyed in the initial hit, but who cares because now they're a cluster of spare parts.

Once they nerf mines I really will need that task manager hotkey. :(

Get the Viper Mk. 4 if you're gonna get a Viper. The Mk. 4 can fit a bigger power plant, so you're not forced to strip down everything just so you'll have enough power for shields and weapons. On top of that, the 4 also has better FSD range and a larger fuel tank.

Responding to my own post because the discussion made me go back and fiddle with it a bit more.

It seems I missed the most obvious thing ever — on the second row of the binds file, there's an attribute to assign a name to the profile. I strongly suspect that I had skipped that part so it only ever showed up as “Custom” when I tried it before, which obviously was the same as the regular custom profile and the client probably just used the most recent file.

For Elite, in particular, you don't actually need that many buttons. Once you've got your axes set up (which, admittedly, will take up a lot since it's a 6dof game), you can assign a ton of functions to just a few buttons since the game itself allows for all kinds of switch- or combination states. Above all, this means you don't have to install or run through SATANHELLBEELZEBUB TARGET to set up switch states, which is a huge plus in terms of usability.

The MKIV is a big fat slow clumsy pig compared to the MKIII. For a cheap direct-combat ship I'd stick with the MKIII - the MKIV is honestly more fit for a 'multi-role ship that can slug it out a bit' type of a niche, like an alternate Cobra MKIII.

Also putting in my two credits for the Diamondback Scout. I loved flying the Viper-3 back when it was The Heavy Fighter, but these days - sure, the DB-S isn't as fast as a Viper-3 but is ridiculously agile, can take a fair bit of punishment and has a beautiful weapon convergence. It also has a huge jump range for a fighter-type ship, making it considerably more pleasant to travel in.

Also, one benefit of the Viper MKIII - since it's still running a class-3 thruster array, you can slap an advanced thruster module in there if gottagofast is your thing. Both the Diamondback-S and the Viper MKIV have class 4 thrusters and they don't make racing drives that big.
