Thrawn is supposed to look like a Caucasian male just with blue skin. The Rebels version looks like they made him a bit more like an Eastern European stereotype, with the long face and receding hairline, but the description still stands.

Maybe another side effect of their environment that causes their blood to glow slightly. Or it could be just a description that got misconstrued, "glowing" could mean more like Thrawn emotes in a way that you notice he's looking at you and not actually light-emitting or light-reflecting. Rebels seems to made his eyes looking bloodshot instead of glowing red.

The whole thing with the Chiss is that they're human or supposed to be human enough that they can enter and be apart of the humanocentric Galactic Empire, which openly discriminates against and enslaves other alien races. It's why I think the blue skin and red eyes is either an environmental condition like argyria or a minor mutation.

So I just saw it and the only thing I don't like about the movie was explained when the credits rolled and was reminded JJ Abram's name was under DIRECTED BY:

This is like the one clear example of where this kind of modern shaky cam cinematography is completely not needed. Also some scenes felt downright poorly shot and most of the ones off the top of my head WERE IN CGI.

Why doesn't it work? Because I actually want to see what's going on. The coolest part about Star Wars is Lasers, Laser explosions, Cool ship designs (design in general) and the even bigger Laser cannons bristling from them. Even during chase scenes it's just out of character for a movie like this.

Other than that less use of the traditional Star Wars Scene transitions kinda annoyed me too.

There are little nitpicks here and there but compared to what the original movies were and what the prequels were this is a solid entry into Star Wars history.

That's just putting the negatives out there first.

HOLY loving poo poo I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I disliked not one character, the pacing was great, the action was loving amazing... and just Kylo Ren. Also the first order is WAY more badass than the Empire ever was. Seem to really have their poo poo together. They did a decent enough job building up the framework of a cool galaxy while making the focus on the characters.

I loved Simon Pegg's Cameo as well. The subtext behind them stealing the Falcon from him whether intentional or not was great and probably not lost on Pegg either.

I dont agree with most of any of that but the worst scene to me is the opening one because it looks really poorly done in a way im not movie savvy enough to quantify, it's flashy but the set feels really small? There is a lack of a sense of scale and it just seems cheap like the sort of amateur stuff you could maybe find the wires and a boom mic if i looked hard enough, even if that's not the case it does have that feel.

The movie gets a lot better after, but it was jarring in the theater and it's jarring on rewatch at home.

It's just one of the few things where if you didn't have iconic Star Wars stuff it wouldn't feel like a Star Wars movie. It ruins a part of the aesthetic for me. This is kinda eliminated when the universe's design is so unique and prevalent throughout the film that it does make it a minor complaint, even if it were worse.

Back on topic: Thinking back, considering it was on a desert planet at night (but still should be well light enough to see background) there were lots of shots that did look like there was NO background at all. I was way too focused on how awesome it was to have new star wars, Kylo, and just lasers. Like the fight (well, the effects) itself was cool, but you are right about it looking indoors. Not to mention there's too much shaky cam and scrambling sequences, not great cinematography like you also said.

I really hope they have Cyborged out troopers in at least one of the new movies. It's in the lore and it shows to what lengths the bad guys are willing to go. And they're awesome. A Dark Trooper with one of those riot batons would be sweet

http://makingstarwars.net/2016/09/a-brief-look-at-star-wars-episode-viiis-space-bombs-sequence/

quote:

Today we have a look at a scene shot at Pinewood Studios back in early May. The sequence featured some green screen extension, a CGI crowd, and rig removal. The scene features burning embers, smoke, and boom and bang FX in a hangar. We also have a look at the explosives from Star Wars: Episode VIII in the sequence discussed here. The prop is essentially a thermal detonator of some kind belonging to a group codenamed “The Grizzlies.” The “Sugar Cubes” and “The Grizzlies” needed up to an hour and a half to get dressed and be on set. It seems the “Sugar Cubes” are likely First Order Stormtroopers so the time to get ready isn’t that extensive considering what that would entail.

The sequence takes place in space and it appears either the First Order is boarding a Resistance Ship or a small band of Resistance fighters is boarding a First Order ship. Overshoes were required that day and in the past it was a thing needed to keep the black floors smudge-free. Another sequence I saw some footage from featured an explosion on a Resistance ship but overshoes were not required for that (for what that’s worth). Our best guess is the sequence involves Finn, Kelly Marie Tran’s character wearing a “medal,” and a resistance technician of some kind as they go up against a squad of First Order Stormtroopers on their ship.

Props needed for the sequence:

213: INT. 100 ACRE WOOD – HANGER Grizzly weaponry, Cast 7 medallion, handcuffs, axes & mace, debris. Grizzly associated paraphernalia (clipboards, glasses, bags, headsets, grizzly bombs / grizzly belt with bombs attached.

100 Acre Wood is a codename in reference to Disney’s Winnie the Pooh, where that story takes place. The sequence featured 22 “Sugar Cubes” and five “Grizzlies.” It appears to be a pretty action-packed sequence and 10 firemen were needed onset as a precaution.

We haven’t been able to confirm what everyone’s number associations are. The production dropped using terms like “Young Original Warrior” as they did for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and instead gave the cast numbers to make it harder to figure out. The scene involves Lamin Tamba (a stand-in for cast number 4). You may remember that Lamin Tamba was rumored to be playing “Daika” but he denied the name to us. Karanja Yorke is the double for cast member 4. The role is apparently for a black male around 5 feet 10 inches tall. For this reason we think this could be John Boyega’s Finn who is only an inch shorter. Since he is cast member 4, an earlier number in the cast list, it makes sense as a good guess to us.

Seng Pin Lee is cast member 7’s Stand-in and Jennifer Li is the double for the same character. Based on the early cast number we also assume this to be Kelly Marie Tran’s character. (We do not assume every Asian actor in the film is Kelly Marie Tran’s character but once again, the early numerical association with the character leaves that as our best guess).

With them is cast member 18, Freddie Andrews (a stand-in) and Mark Slaughter (as cast member 18’s double). It appears either Finn or cast member 18 will wear a belt of these bombs during the sequence.

That day 10 extra costumes were also needed for the crowd.

The Prop Explosive:

Our best guess is the object is edited from an older prop and is probably based on the item Rey cleans in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (the novel says Rey is cleaning “a piece of salvaged electronics” on page 31). Obviously we have no idea if this prop will make it into an unfinished film but I appreciated a close look at a prop and artifact from Star Wars; Episode VIII.

Although that last part could just be a case of trickster god-ism that she caught from JJ Abrams during the filming of VII.

http://makingstarwars.net/2016/11/some-early-solid-rumors-on-star-wars-episode-viiis-laura-dern-benicio-del-toro-and-kelly-marie-tran/

quote:

During the filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII we heard some interesting rumors about the new characters in the film. We’re going to share our preliminary findings from back during the filming of the movie and the rumors sources have given a quiet thumbs up to. While this information is not particularly deep, it at least fills in tiny details to who they are on the surface in the next episode of the Star Wars saga. While we are in full Rogue One mode here at MakingStarWars.net right now, we are constantly asked about the three new characters in the film played by Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran. We have heard lots of interesting things and those rumors need a little verification still but we know you want to know some details now.

Benicio del Toro has been described as a classic “man in black.” As in he wears all black and he’s dangerous. His character is clean shaven with hair not unlike Poe Dameron’s in length. While The Wrap let us know he was up for the role of the bad guy in the film sometime ago, it doesn’t appear the heroes see del Toro as a bad guy, at least not at first. We think he’s connected to the casino set we talked about sometime ago. On paper it sounds a little close to Lando Calrissian in The Empire Strikes Back but before you panic, there are some details we’re still working on that make that appear to a bit of a stretch. We’ll have more to report on Episode VIII’s “man in black” in the future.

Laura Dern is probably the most bombastic of the new characters from the rumors we’ve heard. She is very aristocratic and fancy in a way we haven’t really seen in Star Wars before. Her look is unique. Someone compared her design to The Hunger Games-meets-Star Wars. Dern wears a “fancy” dress and her hair is like something out of the prequels. The biggest defining detail of this new character played by Laura Dern is that she has pink hair in Star Wars: Episode VIII. Sources are at a loss for words when they tried to describe her hair which is very ornate, almost like something out of the Outlander Club in Attack of the Clones.

We suspect Dern’s character has something to do with this woman from the Dubrovnik set last year. People that saw her believed she was something important in the film and sent us this photo. While we can’t speak on the certainty of that, it does seem strange to have more than one woman with purple/pink hair in a movie unless they’re connected somehow. But then again, it might just be a hair cover or something. We considered she could be Dern’s stand-in but the costume we can glimpse under the black robe makes it uncertain.

In the near future we will have details to share on a jumpsuited Kelly Marie Tran and her role in the film and how she ends up tangled up with Finn in their shared story. Her look is almost the opposite of Dern’s character. She’s just very normal looking but her situation is supposedly really cool. We’ll have more on Finn and Kelly Marie Tran in the near future we can share.

Star Wars: Episode VIII is about a year away and I could not be more excited to see where this all goes. We’re in the fun stretch for the next episode where the details are exciting but not entirely movie spoiling either. I hope these details satiate your Episode VIII thirst a little for now.
