I think the translating community as a whole needs to step away from the male protagonist stories and cleanse themselves with female protagonist ones. The only objectionable things I can find for those is that the Chinese female protagonist stories have too many about female femme fatales being reborn. I think it's because it's guys writing strong female characters, and Chinese guys for the most part don't understand what a strong female is.

I agree, the degenerate Chinese should no longer attempt to write stories without making sure what theyre writing is palatable to American tastes.

Actually, I AM Chinese, and I can understand why these stories are enjoyable, specifically the Xianxia ones. It's a combination of extolling the virtues of Chinese culture and power fantasy, perfect for the young adult male Chinese demographic. Good stories like My Disciples Died Again are the exception, not the norm. First thing that I see when I hit up Baidu for web novels? Xianxia. If I eliminate those, what do I find? City life, and not in the slice of life variety. It's the "mobsters everywhere, but it's okay" kind of thing, where the protagonist is some kind of Robin Wood or William Tell. Maybe throw in a bit of supernatural cultivation in for good measure. What if I eliminate all the ones target at the male end of the demographic? Lots of reincarnation stories, where X femme fatale ends up in the Ming/Tang/Song/Golden dynasty of choice and winds up being part of the noble elite. This is why I treasure gems like My Disciple so much, not only because it's good (or at least decent) writing, it's writing that breaks the mold of its contemporaries.

So I noticed BakaTsuki coughed up like 3 volumes of Rakuin no Monshou recently and I remember vaguely enjoying the first volume... two volumes? like a year or two ago christ time flies haha. Curious if any of you guys here read this or know if it's worth reading? Anime takes on classic literature are always kind of interesting but I dunno if it's worth slogging through six volumes. My recollection is vaguely positive and apparently someone felt it was appropriate to put out 3 volumes this month so?

Okay, once more I have to loudly recommend Dungeon Defense. The writing is fantastic. And I can't help but like the MC, he's a murderous and damaged psychopath with a Humbert Humbert level of discourse/unreliable narrator going on. Watch as he forms unhealthy relationships with everyone in his demon-lord life while manipulating the world into a war that will kill millions. How is this different than murderhobos you may ask? Because the author, the mc, and everyone around him KNOWS that under all the flowery speeches he's impossible to redeem. Plus you get amazing scenes like this: quote:I turned my body around and bowed. It was the location completely opposite of where Lapis Lazuli was. Of course, there was no one there. Thanks to the moonlight coming in from the window, I could just barely make out the shape of the floor. Edit: PS, please give it until the end of the first volume before judging the book. The first few chapters are a little shaky. By the end if you're not enjoying the adventures of captain Psychopath and his girl wonder Psycopathia then you probably won't like the following volumes. Well I mean that thing people are talking about at the top of the page is literal pornography, complaining about it is like going to PornHub and complaining about the state of American television. Though admittedly the not-porn light novels are only marginally better most of the time. Annd since this thread is good for unsolicited recommendations I'd like to take a second to rave about The Girl Who Ate Death which is my favorite light novel I've read all year (apologies if it was brought up earlier when the translation was still ongoing in May) it's about war and shades of grey I guess? Not exactly treading new ground in fiction pointing out that the good guys are bad guys and the bad guys are good guys and mostly everyone fights wars legitimately convinced of their own righteousness but it's fairly well done I think. The story is tight and doesn't wander and meander the way a lot of web-novels do, felt the author had a story he wanted to tell, told it, and stopped when it was over - which is a bit of a rarity. There is some mildly interesting military tactics stuff, some vaguely supernatural magic stuff and Schera is a main character I couldn't help but root for throughout the whole story. All in all a really enjoyable experience to get out of a web-novel, really didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did when I started reading. Fair warning though; Schera and company and pretty firmly on the 'bad guy' side of things, I was trying to find something cool to quote and most everything was either spoilers or Schera coming across like a bloodthirsty psychopath, which she is I guess? But it works in the context of the story I think. Is there any sort of compilation of stuff the thread thinks highly of? The thread OP is a bit out of date and most recent discussion has been about Chinese stuff that I really don't generally care for (it sounds terrible but it's hard for me to get past the foreign names in Chinese and Korean stuff) but I've been on a webnovel binge lately because it's cheaper than my other hobbies. It's been a while since I found a really engrossing light novel though, it's a shame - maybe goons can help?

If you like slice of life stuff, Middle Age Man's VRMMO Daily Life is a good alternative to OSO. Picking up a General to Plow the Fields is something new, and has really slow buildup, but from the raws I'm reading is pretty promising. Similarly, Release that Witch is a somewhat promising "bootstrap from medieval to industrial era" story that has a very interesting setting. It's suffering from character bloat, though I hope the author can tie everything off neatly.

In super duper great news, the author just tweeted that Kono Koi to, Sono Mirai has been uncancelled, er, if that's a word. It was originally going to be 6 volumes long, but right after vol 5 came out, the author tweeted bitterly that lovely sales had pushed the publisher into dumping the series. Lots of blogs and whatever brought it up angrily, and somehow it's had an effect, so now we'll be getting the sixth and final volume published on paper after all. I always did find it extremely peculiar that they thought the light novel was a good medium for a transgender story, but oh well. Seriously after him getting basically a laser barrage and bringing everyone he lost back to life and have abilities that ensure that they'll never be killed, why did you continue? Like I admit I too liked the idea of him having way stronger people as his guards and the idea of him having to mature and learn to be a leader of a village, until the story blatantly displayed that any form of challenge or tension was tossed out the window because the author is scared of loss and adversity.

Slime's problem was trying to have its cake and eat it too. It could have made him consistently overpowered and never had him meaningfully fail; honestly that's probably what most of us were expecting. Instead it teased being a real serious story for serious mature readers(tm) and copped out massively a few chapters later. It could have picked either side and would have still been readable instead it picked neither and was the fastest this thread has collectively dropped a story that didn't involve rape or slaves, which is something of an accomplishment.
