While we're on the subject of pointless nerd arguments, Latchkey Kingdom just started a Warhammer 40k parody in-betweener story. I remain pleasantly surprised that a comic with "Literally Derpy Hooves: the Character" in it manages to remain charming.

And it's all some giant Twilight Imperium-style board game, and it's playing out like a board game with alliances and backstabbing. Real classic.

I remember when Psyche posted in these threads and he always seemed to have trouble getting a new idea off the ground after that Sparky the Hellhound short comic he did, but he struck gold with Latchkey Kingdom. It's adorable and the character designs really suit his style.

Latchkey Kingdom is cute enough for me to keep reading, but it always feels a bit underdone. In the last chapter a monster takes on Willa's form and turns out to be cool so they all become bestest buds, and no-one seems fussed about why it did it, how it took on Willa's memories and why it seemed to genuinely believe it was Willa and flipped out when it found it wasn't. It's not like it's some minor detail, it's the entire central mystery driving the story; I'm pretty sure I'd have some questions to ask my shapeshifting clone no matter how nice they are. Kingdom overrun by a weird chicken proto-hivemind? Probably needs some off the wall solution, right? Nope, just poison the fuckers with corn. Good call by Rosaline there.

I don't expect a lot of drama or some intricate world building, but it feels like each plot thread is sort of undercooked or the interesting part is never resolved to a satisfying degree, which works fine in the side chapters (like the current one) but not so much for the longer main chapters. Which is a shame, because it's a fun world with fun characters; Psyche could push himself a lot more with each story and still have it be light, charming and fun.

I just think porn doesn't really work in a webcomic format because in a medium so susceptible to meandering even in the best of webcomics, depicting an act where smaller details need to be explicitly laid out can easily lead to entire weeks where updates consist of what essentially is a single action. It may hold up better in archival reading, but I can't imagine anything more boring and less titillating than checking up on a story for a week and a half and seeing no forward progress because the plot had led into a sex scene.

I had this trouble with my porns for quite some time for this very reason, but workin' on You Suck actually helped quite a bit, since the day-by-day updates encouraged me to include some kind of "beat" with each page of the sex parts. It resulted in something a lot more interesting than the usual dialogue-less stuff I'd do for Slipshine.

Check this whole scene starting here to see what I mean, but obviously not at work or thereabouts.

Things could be going better

That is probably the biggest hurdle, making sure that things are still interesting beyond just the porn. Oglaf and You Suck work with it by mixing humor in with every sexy panel, but something like Jess Fink's Chester 5000 I struggle with a lot because it is a lot of just wordless sex. It works as an archive crawl, but in terms of day to day it can be a lot of "oh we are still doing this".

I still love Fink for everything else, but that one in particular probably shouldn't be a serial webcomic imo

it seems to be an accepted fact in-universe that the kingdom of Hilla can be dumb/weird/silly and most of the population rolls with that. Besides Rose herself, the only person who really got worked up about it was Nikol, who's a recent arrival. I'd kind of expect some follow-up explaining how exactly the weird cursed claw was able to clone Willa at some point. Maybe it's relying on everyone's easy acceptance Rose before exacting some convoluted revenge plot? only time will tell

I'm still a little bummed that 70 Seas was basically wiped from the internet. I really liked it. It was a fun story/concept/world, even if he had a little trouble sticking the landing with chapter/story arc endings. It always felt like it ended one chapter too soon. It did end suddenly, but I can't fault an author for moving on to do other things and leave their old works behind. It's part of your growth as an artist to discard older things that no longer fit anymore instead of keeping some dumb thing you started as a foolish youngster going on and on forever and tacking on the weird new things you want to do until the whole thing is some shambling amalgam of conflicting concepts. *cough*Dan Shive*cough*Pete Abrams *cough*Willis*cough cough cough*

Besides, it's not gone gone. It was taken down because now it's being sold in ebook form, and I get the sense that adding Nikol to the cast was a shameless plug, and it worked on me at least.

While I'd love to see something new from Shive, there's a certain magic EGS has that a lot of other long running comics don't quite have where it's clear he's still doing it because he honestly just loves his dopey world and its weird rules have a good consistency to them. I feel like when he finally gets bored of it he'll stop, but it seems more like a labor of love than something he's doing because it's raking in the cash or whatever.

Well, that fits in completely with his Transformers hobby.

Willis's biggest problem is that he wants to do hard interpersonal drama, intense action, and wacky comedy all at once with the same characters, and it means that the tone of things fluctuates wildly. Also he has really dumb ideas that he gets into, like doing Batman as an average college student and trying to vindicate his past self by trying to show what his belief system should have been like as a college student.

I can't really blame him for that part. It's clearly a really personal thing for him, probably a way of working through some poo poo that still lingers. And if he can find a way to do that which makes money, hey, good for him. Besides, that's at the heart of a lot of art anyway, it's just more obvious in webcomics due to new forms of paratext that come with the medium (notes under the comic, linked blog posts, hovertext, his twitter feed in the corner, etc).
