I watched Making A Murderer this weekend and then listened to this episode yesterday and I'm pretty happy that I don't live in America.

I remember hearing the PI Moms episode a while back, but I think I only heard up through the part where the writer guy goes on the "ride-along". I'm glad I sat down and listened to the whole thing. By the end, I had a lot of respect for how the informant guy didn't break down from how completely surreal the entire thing had become. And yet somehow he and some of the other people involved manage to have a really good sense of humor about it, I laughed hard several times at some of the jokes they made about the crazy poo poo they got wrapped in.

ugh, all those parents on this week's ep insisting that their school not be integrated "because it's a safety issue, don't you dare call me a racist!" sound real awkward and super racist in this context. I mean, maybe you had to be there but boy as that rough.

Yeah, the first time it aired it was probably the most angry I've ever felt listening to a radio thing.

Yeah, it's this one, and the one where the Orthodox Jewish community in a small New York town takes over the school board and systematically destroys the public schools. Both on about the same level for me.

I grew up in St. Louis and the surrounding counties, rest assured that even if you were there, it would have still felt like dogwhistle super racism. Most of St. Charles county, where the Francis Howell school district is, is made of white people who are scared of black people.

Otherwise fairly mild people will get all bunched up over Imaginary Things Happening to My Kid. You can win battles against obvious racism all day long and yet covert racism is only My Kid away.

Really happy to hear Johnathan and Buzz on a podcast again.

It's going to be interesting to head Gregor and Howard when they're not in character.

I just assume Howard Chakowicz is going to be on sooner or later.

I started listening to TAL in the car with my dad, really before I can remember. I've been listening to it ever since, I must've heard every episode. My dad's been dead for about ten years and in the week following his death I had called his phone a few times to do basically what was detailed in the first segment of this Sunday's episode. I've never had such a strong reaction to a radio show before. What a fantastic episode.

Did anyone else listen to ep 2 of Heavyweight? Gregor was hilarious and I totally loved the whole Moby CD saga.

So far, Heavyweight reminds me of Mystery Show mixed with TAL. I really loved both episodes, but I've never listened to WireTap. My only experience with Jonathan Goldstein is from his guest appearances on TAL and Judge John Hodgman.

Yeah, I listened to the Wind Telephone segment, and thought, hot dang, why don't I do something like that? Just thinking about it and hearing even the saddest bits of that segment made me feel a slight burden lifting that I didn't even know was there.

Starlee just posted an update on Mystery Show on FB (sorry to hijack the TAL thread)... I mean, I kinda see what they were getting at about it being unsustainable, but why not make short, 6-episode seasons with long breaks in-between? I think people understand it's a niche show that takes a lot of work. Makes me pretty disappointed with Gimlet :sigh:

Without getting a better sense of the timeline, I'm not sure how this reflects poorly on Gimlet. I didn't listen to Mystery Show - when did the last season end? How many episodes were in the prior season? She's upfront that she wasn't really able to think of new stories as quickly as she would've liked. Maybe the show just didn't have enough gas to go for years and years.

To be honest, this is kind of a concern that I have for Heavyweight. Shows like Reply All can alternate between a bunch of different kinds of stories, but Mystery Show and Heavyweight feel like they rely more on the host's direct connection to the story, and no one's life can be THAT interesting on demand.

Gimlet posted a statement a few hours ago that didn't even dance around it, it just says it was too ambitious (expensive) for their current business model or something like that. I've listened to a few other of their podcasts and (correct me if I'm wrong) they don't usually have those long-form super custom advertising features like MS did so maybe they already knew it was gonna be an undertaking they couldn't budget for without lots of support.

I'm kinda bummed but I doubt they'd drop something so popular without a darn good reason, and also starlee kine will be fine and can probably float around the scene pretty well and make stuff just as good wherever she lands.

e: also the Surprisingly Awesome I listened to today just announced a "break" starting after next weeks episode lasting until after the new year, maybe Gimlet is working some stuff out. Nothing mentioned on yesterday's Sampler but that probably costs almost nothing to produce anyway.

This week's ep was kind of the most enlightening election coverage I've ever heard/seen. Explains so much about Trump/Brexit. The naked bigotry couched by people trying to sound reasonable and non-racist with "OUR KIDS WILL HAVE TO INTERACT WITH NON-WHITE CHILDREN" and "Sharia Law is absolutely a thing in the United States, IT'S LIKE WE'RE LIVING ON DIFFERENT PLANETS".

It really is!

EDIT: seriously, that reasonable logical lady they spoke to used pretty much the same words as the lady against segregated schools in the '80s or whatever in the ep they did a while back.

The fact that people look to Paul "I wish Ayn Rand would peg me" Ryan as the hope for the Republican party should stand as a testament to how screwed up we are.
