Episode 5 was the point where I thought to myself "this show might be too brutal for even me to enjoy," and I grew up watching every crime procedural under the sun. That show really does revel in its own nastiness a bit too much. Still good, but jesus.

In other news the new series of Red Dwarf has the first episode up on UKPLAYTV. It's worth watching. If you're new to the show I don't think it'll convert you but if you've watched a lot you'll like it. Bonus Actor Kevin Eldon in there.

Might as well just wrap it up then if this is true. Mary Berry was a gimme, but on the other hand, it is The Sun saying this. ComradeCosmobot fucked around with this message at 23:07 on Sep 17, 2016 |

They bought the format without getting the talent contracts. It's pretty schoolboy stuff. The real question is whether BBC light entertainment produce the brand new idea of strictly come baking. The porn-alike title just adds to the innuendo laden delivery.

It's probably terrible of me that my first thought was, "Presented by Nigella Lawson." (Seriously, it bemuses me that Nigel Lawson called his daughter "Nigella" but didn't call either of his sons "Nigel Jr." - I can only assume that he was against the single currency because nobody agreed with his idea to call it the Nigello.)

Nigella is also a plant/flower with culinary uses. Still, nothing on how George Foreman named his kids. Or Kimbo Slice (Kevin Jr., Kevin II, Kevlar, Kassandra, Kiara, and Kevina) WeAreTheRomans fucked around with this message at 08:20 on Sep 18, 2016 |

Despite having a bigger budget it also looked cheap as hell. Still better than the last series though.

Maybe it just wasn't the right episode to start off a series, but it felt really sloppily written and jokes went on for longer than needed. Very cheap sets didn't help either. Also, I believe Americans call prams strollers.

I like the cheap sets and dodgy CGI. It obviously wasn't on par with their best stuff, but at least it looked like an episode of Red Dwarf.

Apparently there's a new BBC America Dirk Gently's coming up without Stephen Mangan and with Elijah Wood as the straight man. Could be good? They might have to file down the 'there is no uni but oxford. end of' but would be great if they can do a good crossover/shout-out when they visit the professor there.

Bit late on the "cringey comedy" chat but nobody mentioned Pete vs Life, which is incredibly cringey and quite funny. For me most of the comedy is provided by the commentator gimmick so it won't be something that everyone gets but well worth a watch on 4oD if you have a passing acquaintance with british sports commentary.

The Mangan Dirk Gently adaptation was absolutely superb. It's cancellation was a travesty in a long line of travesties of shows that were killed while being excellent. See also: The Hour, Whites.

C4's new 4-part drama National Treasure (no relation to the Cage) has Robbie Coltrane as an 80s comedian weathering a lot of hustorical rape charges. Written by Jack Throne who's done a lot of This is England.

They're pushing the Scandi-drama aesthetic real hard, with the super-minimalist font, austere lighting, and occasional abstract arty shots, but hey it works and the writing is good

I like how they're pushing an "as he innocent? Is he not?" angle like C4 would at any cost run a drama about 6 woman issuing fake rape allegations.

It seems more like "to what extent will he be revealed as a piece of poo poo?". I mean the first episode has him resenting his comedy partner, sucking up to TV execs, being petty and insecure, visiting hookers regularly, and a scene with his daughter which brings up stuff about him smacking his son (I think?) around and perving on his daughter's tits. Although that was a ll a bit unreliable narrator-y. I'm gonna keep watching anyway

That reminds me, 'The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies' is on Netflix if you didn't get round to watching it. It's really good and kind of related to that National Treasure in terms of how the media twist stories to their own ends.
