^^^ This is my guess, especially considering NK specifically told them to wait until after the heroes showed up to open the book. I'm guessing he's pretty confident that they'll be able to take out the Forsaken Master, but only through ~*~The Power of Friendship~*~ Anything else just seems pretty far outside NK's characterization so far...

The whole point of KN interactions with Parfait and Peridot (who btw is like right there and would probably suffer the same fate as Cordelia if this is genuine) was to show he's not truly evil, he doesn't want to bring darkness to the world, and he's kept this whole charade going because he cares deeply for his underlings, even one as useless as Splashmaster. I'll be very surprised if after that his next action is a surprise betrayal that amounts to 'if you're not strong then you are of no use to me so LOL GET REKT'.

Wife made a good observation. In the comic where she states that 'this isn't like me', the gutter for the comic cuts over her face to punctuate the loss of identity. Also, the lighting here is freaking great.
